Born in Belgrade in 1946, she pushes the boundaries of both body and mind in works such as the now-legendary "Rhythm 0" where she relinquished all control to her audience and for eight hours permitted them to use a series of objects, including a gun, on her person.
Abramović's most recent show, "As One," is at the Benaki Museum in Athens, where she has been mentoring young Greek performance artists as well as introducing her audience to The Abramović Method, as practised by Lady Gaga.

It's not literal, she had "sacrificed" children as she did not have children so not the interfere with her art. By not having children she "sacrificed" a family life and when you thrust yourself into the public eye, you sacrifice privacy. She is saying she has sacrificed a certain, typical lifestyle for her art. It's just a figure of speech.

As an artist myself it's so interesting to see how people project their own fears when they don't understand something.The real Art here is society and how they react everytime she performs. She is not the Artist she is just an observer a blanc canvas. You create the art by what you choose to see and you react. If you see evil thats your own projection your own fears. I see someone who is fascinated by human behavior i see someone who sees humans as art. She wants people to experience that same feeling. But most people lack depth. I like how she also challenge herself more and more almost like a spiritual experience.

I love your analysis on this.. I feel the same but couldn’t quite put it into words. After reading this I realized, I don’t think there’s any other artist who I find as interesting as their work. Not too say the others aren’t interesting people, but I think she really matches her work with her mind

she admits herself here that part of her is full of bs - she acknowledges that this becomes a part of it sometimes. I am sad, and also flabbergasted that I had somehow never heard of her until recently. I am absolutely fascinated by her and what she's doing. She is fearless. And yet she's also not fearless - and she explores the things she's afraid of and puts them out there for others to see and talk about. If I had even the courage that she has in her pinkie finger, my life would be so different - all of us could use that.

Marina is a true artist - and as she says : "art can be disturbing, and make us ask questions, not only and exsusively beautiful..." but you do have to have some understanding of performance art in order to read her art, if any religous or philosophical taught is behind her art it is Buddhism, but if you are not familiar with it, you will see it as Satanism - just because her pieces are direct and disturbing, often (but not always!) cheerz ~

You know Nikola Tesla was getting death threats when he invented AC because ppl thought its dangerous - and today we know it was DC that was dangerous and we use only AC!

@@user-uw8dy5lz7p You can't know wether he would love or even like her art. I seriously doubt he would, but I can't know for sure either. Look at the man's own works, his aesthetics conception is all about beauty and technical skill, not to mention he was a passionate christian. Many people from this century are disturbed by her art, I'd expect it to be even less accepted by renaissance artists. Performance is not evil, but some of her performances certainly are. Not in a religious way, but in that she could have gotten physically impaired or died performing.

I've taken years to refine and advance my talent. yes art just like beauty is in the beholder... however. this is not art. that is not an opinion. that is fact. time, talent, skill, imagination, and effort....that is what something has to have to be art. no arguing about it. and that is not in anyway art. its a brief shock to some and that is it.
