I’ve been doing my family tree, and occasionally come across pictures of their gravestones. As you can imagine, they can be very difficult to read. I found that putting different filters over the top of them, eg, making them black or white, could make it much easier to read. I am tickled pink that you did the same with the signature on the picture. I feel quite proud of myself that I figured this technique out, especially that I am an accountant by trade with no artist training. And going down rabbit holes, I quite often end up down them whilst trying to track people down. Like today. I’ve spent five hours proving that someone wasn’t a relation! Then I put the information on Ancestry to help other people trying to track their relatives and save them from pulling their hair out like me! Fortunately I am a female so it grows back….I can relate to spending hours researching someone and absolutely love how you’ve worked out the family tree’ of this painting and have passed it on.

The painting looks so much better! Even "skinned" as it is, you can see the artists original intentions. The animation was fantastic. I really enjoyed seeing the full history and their expressions were hilarious! 😂 Hopefully, one day, the descendants of the Gent will be able to see the restored version of their ancestor!

I think he looks amazing.Personally like you ,I think you did the correct amount of work on him,any more and you’re going to go into re painting him. That defeats the objective. This way shows the paintings age,the quality of the artists work and what the subject looked like whilst he was being painted. His true colours under the dirt and the over painting were much better than what the other restorer !well we will loosely call him that.Once the coats of your varnishes went on it has the effect of making the character, not only more 3D ,but it also makes the colours richer and deflects from the minor flaws, and as the portrait will be viewed at a distance, the more worn areas will not be so obvious.I think you did an exceedingly great job and he looks fabulous.I hope your client was thrilled too 🥰

Thank you for making this series. The transformation is amazing. One of my favorite authors is Daniel Silva. His main protagonist is a character named Gabriel Allon. He is a spy, but also an art resortorer. In the books, the author will usually describe an art restoration project - like a Bellini. He goes into a lot of detail. Your projects totally bring these portions of the book to life.

Fabulous! The previous 'restorer' should be turning in his grave at the horrible job he did, and was paid for. No wonder it was consigned to the stable block. You have recovered and restored our Regency Gent to his proper place and he will probably grace his owner's wall for a long time.

It's been quite a journey, both the restoration of what is once again an excellent work of portraiture and the discovery of its original creator, or creators, it seeming to have been a father - son collaboration by unfortunate necessity. As some others have stated, it would be interesting to learn of the current owners' reaction to the finished work, while realizing that a good many clients likely wish to retain their privacy.

Out of interest, if an oil painting from the 1970s were badly overpainted in the 1990s, also in oils, would there be possible to remove the overpaint, or is that all too close in date?
