In this episode we carry on cleaning the painting, starting with the face and the wig. We remove a very discoloured varnish. We learn about "full bottom wigs" and start to retouch the portrait late into the night! We also make a decision on what to do with the extender piece we found last episode.

Thank you , Im enjoying researching the period too! It just adds another dimension to the paintings ...reading a great book on The Duke of Monmouth at the moment who was Charles 2nd Illegitimate son - a great read and all around this period...

What a shame that the added edge wasn’t included in the finished painting, such history but I do get the client’s decision. Many thanks .

Yes I know , Its part of the history of the painting but it wasnt as the original artist would have intended just one of those interesting discoveries...In a few hundred years or so someone else might be lucky enough to have the same surprise as I did if they clean the portrait and remove the varnish!

As others superb historical detail really adds to the art history background. I think that the full wig that High Court judges used to wear was also known as a ‘full bottomed’ wig. Thank you again.

Thank you , yes I think you’re right , and as things progressed it’s only the legal profession that still wears them having a special wig box to carry them round in …

Great job and it was nice to hear about the wig. It must take awhile just to match the color that your painting in over the filler.

The wigs are such a dominant piece of history and were quite important in society, a funny trend really when you think about it, much was to hide the effects of syphillus and the scarring it could cause on the scalp! I enjoy the colour matching and you get used to what colours make which!

@@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration I understand. I restore electric guitars and don’t always take care of my back while leaning over the work.
