Excellent Presentation !!! I do appreciate ALL YOUR HONEST INFORMATION PLUS OPINIONS. I fact it reinforce the sadness of us in PR were not able to purchase the Demon 170 and if were imported your are out of warranty. DEMON 170 is and was and still is a EXPERIMENT. Good Job, agree with the mass production fact, but that is part of the experiment. This car was thought to be a Garage Queen but the shoot came out the wrong side. It is a Piece of Art & Engineering too bad they didn't make more than they made, and worst not made more for the rest of the word. This project was beyond DODGE capabilities. I won't call it a Red Neck Borderline Discrimination even do looks like it, but yes I will call it a DODGE incapacity to delivery a DIAMOND. That DODGE can make it better? Everybody can make it better !!!!! Thanks you I'm looking foward to your upcomming U-tubes, thanks you very much !!! This video's make looks the DEMON as Harbor Freight Hacks tutorials LOL 🤣

Speedy, Rich Scotto here.... we missed you at the Bowling Green NMCA event.... other than being rained out on Sat, it was a great time..... The gentleman with the silver 170 that you showed was parked across from us. One of the guys in our group actually caught a glimps of a fire in the engine bay that he wasn't aware of and they were able to put it out otherwise things would have ended much worse for him. As you said, he found out later that week that the engine failure was covered under warranty....

The dealer won't re gap the plugs unless there is a misfire code, and they have to drive the car to duplicate the misfire. The other thing you need to remember is that your car may not have a misfire right now @ .032, however, that gap will increase with run time. If that car starts to misfire due to spark blowout, you will destroy the cats. That car that kicked a rod could have had a bad cat due to misfire, and it kicked a rod due to excessive back pressure.
@SpeedysGarage
@SpeedysGarage Ай бұрын
They don't have to drive the car to duplicate the issue. If a code is present that's enough. Depending on relationship with the customer I bet a lot can just get it done with simply asking.

Great video. Thanks for providing the Data logs and oil analysis. Real data is the truth police. Be interested to see what the injector and timing data logs look like on Sunoco 260 GT. 👍
@SpeedysGarage
@SpeedysGarage Ай бұрын
Injector would be fine since Sunoco 260GT is just race gasoline, however the timing would still be a problem. It would be around 2-3 deg at 4,000 RPM and 21psi of boost so still making a LOT of heat in the motor.
@Fk8td
@Fk8td Ай бұрын
Less ignition timing does not mean higher cylinder temps it’s higher egt cause the hot gasses are escaping out the exhaust. The later you ignite the fuel the more egt which is how we spool turbo cars better my starting at lower timing at lower boost spool area

Hope all works out well on your 170 it just sucks that you have to have that in the back of your mind of a possible failure point it’s sad cause the 6.2 platform has been modified beyond a lot of safe points and did well and proved itself as a well built engine how they shanked a few is sad the 170 should be the pinnacle of perfection and maybe it is too much BS to sort thru enjoy it and take the bumps and bruises that may come along thanks for your honest thoughts good luck speedy!!!!

Thank you for this video, and your nice update on all that has been floating out there about the Demon 170 and its engine. I agree that the "drama" over this car is a bit out of control, and, quite frankly, nothing short of silly at this point. For some, it seems more like "hatred" of the Demon 170 and owners rather than simple disagreement and comment. Infact, some days I feel like I am watching the movie "Mean Girls" with my daughter. LOL. In any case, I agree with the vast majority of what you have shared in your clip. However, I must disagree with your somewhat dismissiveness (like RacerX) of the 1,500 Dodge required break-in period. First, Dodge had no reason to put that break-in requirement in the Demon 170 manual unless they believed it would help avoid engine failures. And, afterall, Dodge built these 1,000 HP plus engines so if anyone knows whats best for break-in, its the builder of the actual engine. Second, the handful of Demons with engine failures I have leaned about to date were all dragged at about 500 miles, and not after the required 1,500 mile break-in period. Dodge warns of engine failure in that exact scenario (i.e., failure to follow the 1,500 mile break-in schedule), and that is exactly what appears to be happening. Lastly, I have seen no evidence that explains why 500 miles is univerally sufficient to break-in high HP engines. Just because that has been a common practice in the past does not mean its the best practice. Even Lexus today requires a 1,000 miles break-in period for many of their cars today, and none of those Lexus engines come close to approaching 1,000 HP plus. So, until the evidence indicates otherwies, I would suggest sticking with what the engine builder tell owners to do, and stack the small number of actual Demon 170 engine failures to owner error, and not engine builder error. However, if we start to see Demon 170s that were broke in the full 1,500 miles with failures my opinion will certainly change. And, to date, there have been ZERO failures in that regard from what I can find on-line. Lastly, one KZfaqr has recently suggested ithat if 500 miles is not sufficient to break-in the Demon 170 engine, all other Demon 170s that were dragged at 500 miles should have failed as well. Of course, you could make that same argument for engines in all cars that do not fail where NO break-in period is followed from the delivery date. I would equate that type of logic to Russian Routlette - sometimes you get lucky. And, even if you are lucky, who knows how long an engine broken-in incorrectly will last or how long it will hold comparable and acceptable compression accross all 8 cylinders. I guess time will tell, and opinions will continue to vary. But thats why these discussions are helpful. To consider other points of views and opinions.

If the break-in procedure in the manual were specific to the 170 I'd tend to agree, but it is literally cut and paste from every SRT vehicle.

Suprising that you should not run WOT passes with 93 Octane. Don't have a Demon but I would be concerned about leaving the car sitting for long periods with E85 in the tank due to to it's hydrophillic nature. Would store it with 93 Octane which is not based on any data, just past history on E85 cars and some injector issues from it being a good cleaner of engine deposits (and sometimes the deposits end up in filters or injectors). Knew you would provide some good data logging and technical details as always. Sure you are not done digging and if others have issues perhaps that will provide some information for further analysis. Good explanation of the oiling system and your data to support that oil starvation should not be occurring. Internet experts have all but concluded that it needed to be a dry sump system - apparantly not the case.
@SpeedysGarage
@SpeedysGarage Ай бұрын
I can drive year round here, so I don't have to worry with storing, but I do run a few gallons of 93 through to keep things "clean" as you mentioned. Just now WOT when 93 is in the tank.

These cars hold 7.5qts of oil in the pan and system (mid hash). That combined with pan design eliminate any chance of starvation.

Great video. Question. Did you have any misfires on 93 octane. Im in Canada. E85 isn't around. I dont hit WOT, but I have passed some cars and it after the Demon kicks down, I have seen 17 pounds of boost at about one third maybe half throttle. Do you see any issues with that. Is it just WOT you think things get bad on pump gas. Im running 94 octane. Thanks

Awesome video....but the reason I think is a rushed vehicle product and definitely quality control. Stellantis rushed this vehicle, putting pressure to release it. And many were definitely poorly assembled. The redeye and superstock and 2018 demon are a better buy. Most were chasing that 1025 HP number.... I think the demon 170 in my opinion, is overpriced shit.
@SpeedysGarage
@SpeedysGarage Ай бұрын
I don't believe there were misfires, however I wouldn't use much throttle at all on pump gasoline. You can order 55 gallon drums of E85 to mix in. Kind of a pain to store, but better than an engine issue.
@SpeedysGarage

At MSRP they were a good deal considering a standard Redeye was $100K at the same time, however with the markups definitely over priced IMO.
