I grew up and live by CENTCOM (MACDILL AFB ) For most of my 62 years. I've seen the Blue Angeles, and their Air Force equivalent ,the Thunderbirds, many times. They fly right over my sailboat when they're here. It alternates yearly. 1 year it's the Angeles, next the Birds. I've been seeing them since the 70s when they flew the F4 Phantoms. Fun to see. Finally, a video I can comment on with a touch of knowledge... The way that it works in the US Navy; you can hope to get into a tactical squadron that has a reputation that allows you to go wherever you want to after you roll out (your 2-3 year billet, depending on your location (CONUS/OUTCONUS)). VFA-195, (Strike Fighter Squadron 195) out of CAG-5, Atsugi Japan (at the time - has since moved) was one of those squadrons. If you flew with that group and were good, write your next ticket. Many pilots went on to Strike Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) as instructors, others went on to various commands. At the time of this video, about half of the Blue Angels came from VFA-195. (Great time to take my nephew to a show and have insider access from knowing half the pilots. Made me seem really cool to my nephew). It's an old video. I can tell because I was with VFA-195 from 1995-1998. When the video starts, it shows "Bart" (Commander Bartlett) as #1, he took command of the unit at some point. He rolled out of VFA-195 as a LCDR, straight into the Blue Angels, somewhere around '96. Super cool guy. One of the better pilots I worked with. So here's the deal... I'll try to put things in order so they stack. 1. The Blue Angels are completely, 100% combat ready. They are not stripped down for air demos. Outside of the paint, they could be loaded up with weapons and deployed as is. A major part of their "show" isn't illusion. If you look at other demo flight groups, a lot of it has to do with viewer angles and "wow" factor of how it looks. The Blue Angels are really about showing tactical capability. 2. The white smoke: It's simply to let people know where they are. These things move so quickly, if they weren't dropping a trail, people would miss 90% of the action, simply because they wouldn't see them. 3. What they show and most people miss: I'm at Fleet Week in San Francisco one year with a couple of friends. My buddy's wife is kind of bored, not understanding the flying around and such. I pointed over to the mountains by the Golden Gate Bridge, knowing that they would pop over them at low altitude at some point. I said "Imagine this things that are about to show themselves pop up, fire off a couple AIM-9s, then disperse. What are you going to do?". The speed at which they showed up and left, left her slack-jawed. She only said "Holy F*&k. Where are they coming from next"? It's a show of tactics. Video will never capture that and most people never understand it. 4. Flying Paint. These guys start the season at a few feet from each other. By the end, they're flying within 18 inches of each other. What they do is line up a rivet within their canopy to a spot of paint on the tail of the leading plane. Then, hold it there, aligned. That's flying paint. 5. Video can't do it justice. The heat, noise and smell of a flight deck is beyond words. As an old WW2 buddy put it: "It's a million dollar experience, I wouldn't pay a F$#king nickel to repeat". -Go Navy

Interesting note, the pilots don't wear G-suits. They fly so close together that if the g-suit inflates it will push their control hand causing a collision. There are some excellent documentaries put out by the US Navy about them, even on board footage, you can listen to the flight boss calling the cadence as they fly.

I love the Blue Angels. I've been lucky enough to see them several times. Their silent sneak attack jump scares me every time 😂. They can run "silent". You won't hear anything coming behind you and then swoosh! American military aviators are to me the best in the world. I wouldn't recommend any other countries trying to get into a head on fight with these guys. They would absolutely out maneuver and merc them. Absolutely great video today guys. Thanks. ❤ from the Great State of Texas 😊

There is scuttlebutt about the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds doing a joint performance in the near future. During the pandemic both groups joined together to fly over major cities in the US to recognize and honor our medical professionals and first responders. An interesting fact about their planes. They are all aircraft that are near the end of their service life. Too worn out to continue carrier landings. They are stripped of anything not needed for their new mission and given a thorough overhaul. By the time the Blues are done with them, they're only good as a museum piece, gate guard, or scrap heap.

Retired Navy Hospital Corpsman, in 1985 I was stationed at NAS Pensacola, home base of the Blue Angels and got to know many of their enlisted personnal. Unfortunately, they lost one of their pilots LCDR Gershon in a crash during an Air Show in my hometown of Niagara Falls during the season, and the mood around the Base was depressed for a while. Later that same year they held a Change Of Command Ceremony at the National Naval Aviation Museum on Base and I was on medical on standby for the Ceremony. Also in attendance were the Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team, the Air Force Thunderbirds and Canada's Snowbirds (honestly I don't remember if the Royal Air Force Red Arrows were there or not). Being from Niagara Falls were the crash occurred, it meant a lot to me.

The Navy Blue Angels & Air Force Thunderbirds shows do more to demonstrate the tactical capabilities of the aircraft as well as the pilots. I've seen both teams countless times since the 50's & have never seen them use colored smoke. I've enjoyed the Red Arrows as well as the Canadian Snowbirds whose shows are similar to the Red Arrows that seem to fly in ways to offer more in the way of visual patterns and not so much what the plane is capable of. Once many years ago a British pilot attended a Blue Angels show & put on a 5 minute "tactical" show in his Tornado which is truly a badass airplane. The guy was great fun to watch.

If you get the chance, watch the Blue Angels documentary by JJ Abrams. It shows how they start their season in training in CA. They are assigned for 2 yrs service with the Blue Angels. It takes the team a little bit of time to perfect the Diamond formation, as the formation that they work hard to perfect is the Patriotic formation, where they at approximately 18 inches from each other. It is a very interesting and informative documentary on the Blue Angels. They a AMAZING!

I live right by Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, USA, and have attended numerous air shows. As far as I know none of the US military air acrobatic teams (Blue Angels - US Navy flying F-18 Super Hornets, Thunderbirds - US Air Force flying F-16 Fighting Falcons) use multi-colored smoke. Not sure why. I've seen the Red Arrows, fantastic team, and love their colorful display patterns. It's definitely something the American teams could emulate to add more spark to their presentations.

Lifelong Blue Angels fan, I finally saw them again this past week after not seeing them for quite a few years. Got awesome seats and saw them start and takeoff. As people have said, the Blue Angels represent the Navy and fly F18s. We also have the Air Force equivalent which are called the Thunderbirds and fly F16s. In the US the Navy's only fighter jets are F18 or F35. The USAF flies F15, F16, F22, and F35 for their fighter fleets.

0.5 meters. The "Diamond Four" separation, wingtip to canopy. Look at it this way. Take a 12,000 kg aircraft, travelling at 250 kph and hit a football pitch sized target that is, by the way, moving in all three axis, and do it every time you want to come home. Oh, and you've been flying 6 hrs in combat, it's 2:00 am and your home is in a storm. Precision!! Studies in Viet Nam showed more stress at landing than in combat.

When you see the vapor forming around the aircraft, they are approaching to speed of sound. It’s when the jet passes through the “cone of condensation” is when they break the sound barrier. The smoke is used by the pilots to tell the lead that they are in the correct formation with correct spacing depending on the maneuver. Have a look at a POV Blue Angels video to gain a better perspective of the spacing

*That* was impressive. 👏 I don't understand what happened at 7:34. Two planes were so close they looked like they were overlapping. Then they did synchronised complete 360° rolls without hitting each other. Very clever camera angles? I watched that on the original, but it still looked impossible. I think the music, in-cockpit angles, and some of the very close formation shots gives it a more 'action-packed' feel than views from the ground. I wasn't clear it was an air display. I only saw the edge of a possible audience on the ground once. Fascinating. Nice to see BP2 'grooven' to the tunes 👍 Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮ G-Man-😎

The oyher is The US Air Force Thunderbirds, their colors are Silver and Blue from The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs , Co. While the Air Force flies alone, the Blue Angels always have one pilot that is a Marine. The Blues only blow white smoke. The diamond is impressive but I've always had a thing for 5 and 6.. The solos. The entire team does flyovers for major sporting events.. like the Super Bowl. I've been watching them since I was 3. The USAF Thunderbirds are white with red accents and blue on the bottom. They also only use white smoke. Personally I think you can see the Blues better in the sky but that's just a personal preference. The Thunderbirds have had female pilots before the Blues showing that they have good taste. 😊 You didn't get to see Fat Albert though. It's their C-130 that can take off on a short strip and go straight up.

For the first part of the show the Blues and Thunderbirds brake their teams into two elements. The four plane diamond show the precision of formation flying and the two solos show the high speed and tight turns as they cross each other in close maneuvers. The last part of the show all six plane do large loops and rolls in what is called the delta formation

Do US Air Force has the Thunderbirds. Every year here in the Chicago area they have the Chicago air and water show and they usually have either of the blue Angels or the Thunderbirds and they fly out over Lake Michigan.

The Thunderbirds are the Red Arrows equivalent in the US. LOL!! The twin vertical stabilizers (thingies). I'm not sure about smoke now days. They used to have red/white/blue for short bursts before. Adam Savage rode with the Blue Angel & threw up a few times. He said it was the best time he ever had getting sick. Look on KZfaq 'adam savage blue angels'. I think he blacked out once with the g forces. I don't think you could react to it. Copyrighted and all that.

The Blue Angles are based at a Florida Naval Air Station on our Gulf of Mexico Coast. They practice almost daily in some form or fashion. These practice flights are the best free air-show one can watch.

Great reaction ... awesome in fact. And actually, you are correct. The Blue Angels are flown by U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines pilots. The Thunderbirds are flown by the U.S. Air Force are our direct equivalent to your Red Arrows. I have always preferred the Blue Angels though. I think they are the cream-of-the-crop and have a very low number of "accidents", making them the elite acrobatic team here and no, I don't think they use colored smoke on any occasion or for any event. I can't be 💯% certain of that, but I've been to tons of airshows, mostly where the Blue Angels were the featured attraction, and I have never seen them do it. Update: The Blue Angels fly to within 18" of each other, on a regular basis. You saw a few examples in this video. Cheers, brothers from another country🥂🍻👍😁

They don't use colored smoke. There are 6 aircraft, but often they do precision formations as a 4-ship and then as it goes out to get configured for the next fly-by, the other two are soloists who will make a pass such as the knife-edge merge, etc. This keeps the show moving along, and then as shown sometimes they join to a 6-ship. There are other videos taken from their cockpits showing formations so close with wingtips just slightly beyond a cockpit, etc. They also have one or two 2-seaters that will conduct publicity rides prior to shows for television personalities, etc., just to help raise awareness for the upcoming show. Both the Blues and the USAF Thunderbirds are chosen from active units for a 2 or 3-year assignment to the Demonstration Teams, then at the end go back to resume service in a unit. I’ve seen both the US Navy Blue Angels and the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This video doesn’t represent the finesse and smoothness that the Angels demonstrate in their show. They do have their power moments but most of the show is highly controlled precision flying; probably because you have to often land on an aircraft carrier in real life. The Thunderbirds have always seemed to be more in the power mode and even in their more precise moments they never seem to be anywhere near as tight a formation; probably because they always land on big, fairly long runways. The shows are different and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Not "Super Hornet", Legacy Hornet. The older model. The Air Force Thunderbirds lost an entire diamond formation because they were focused on keeping position and followed the leader into the ground. 1982

This video does no justice to what they are actually doing and the cordination. This is more of a hype video but you watch a technical video especially with comms and its so impressive. They are within less then 2 feet from each other when in formations. They also dont were GSuits like you normally would going to battle. Way better videos you could watch then this and there are actually 7 Angel Aviators and if you have never seen the AC130 Hercules you are in for a treat

The planes that the Red Arrows use, the Hawk T1, are significantly less powerful & less maneuverable than the F/A-18, being a trainer. There are some pretty strict requirements to be a Blue Angel. You MUST be a career Navy or USMC aviator. You must have a minimum of 1250 hours of flight time in fighters. You must be carrier qualified. You must be reccomended to the Blue Angels, formally, by a current or former CO. Once a pilot makes the cut, they're a Blue Angel for two years, then, it's back to the fleet.
