Hey Charlie, thank you for this video. I have found AFM safecoat out of the UK does sell 100ml / 4oz sample size cans of both the clear penetrating oil and the oil wax finish. I just looked to see how much it cost me to order and ship a can of each hear to Australia from the UK and there was no charge for under 25kg. And the cost of the two cans was under $40.00 Australian. Hope that helps someone. Tom

Thanks my friend! Good info! As I said, it is a great product for flute makers, not at the top of my list for flute players however. Olive oil is much cheaper!

Hello Charlie, great info, thanks for all the info you share on your craft. After watching about a dozen of your videos I have just ordered one of your beautiful flutes. I live in Tasmania Australia, and hoping that it doesn’t get held up in customs.

Thank you so very much! It shouldn't be any problem however once you receive your tracking number, please be sure to watch for when it arrives in Tasmania. We usually ship after 7 to 14 days. Feel free to email if you have any questions!

What a coincidence. I just finished my first flute last week and I oiled it with the exact same mineral oil. I think it is a very safe product.

Nice video. I made a 4-hole whistle and 5-hole flute about a week ago from PVC. I have a lot to learn, but I'm happy with the first time results. Now, I want to make more and try tackling a wood flute. Nice to see some good finishing products. Makes me wonder how well they would work as a finish on the Cigar Box Guitars that I build. I use Truoil right now, but I do like to experiment. Thanks!!

@bluebearflutes Thank you for this great and informative video. I’ve been using the Howard’s Butcher Block Conditioner on and inside my flutes from Blue Bear Flutes and other makers. To use this inside the bore, I use a rifle cleaning kit and put the conditioner on strips of cloth. It works really well.

Actually, Morgan motor cars used wood for their chassis all the way up into the 1930s. But still uses wood today for the body framework.

Mineral oil is used on horses for many things primarily as a hoof treatment but I’m sure you were implying the constipation and fecal impaction cure

Lovely video! There's one specific thing I have been wondering about in regards to flute maintenance. And that is how to best take care of the closed air chamber. Does that need some special care, as that's the part of the flute that is likely to see the most moisture build up? Also, are there any specific essential oils that are useful for flute maintenance? I have been thinking of adding a few drops of tea tree oil, but I'm not sure if that is a good or bad idea.

Osiyo, Charlie! Great video! Another flute maker told me I should immerse my flutes in mineral oil for 24hrs the wax them. I am curious what your thoughts are on that.
@BlueBearFlutes
@BlueBearFlutes 11 ай бұрын
I've done that. It may produce a result you like, just not one I prefer. Additionally, afterwards the flute will always seep oil! 😅

I've been thinking about what oil I will use first, but also thinking about natural stains and such. I've been thinking about using coffee as a stain. Maybe fine grind a let it soak in hot mineral oil, let cool and see what I get. Lol

There are several natural plants that you can use in addition to the coffee, with the amount of flutes that we make (specifically the ones that I stain), there is a company who's staying I buy. It's called Rubio Monocoat. Worth looking into!

@jasonwalton1985 hey, I did get your message on the 24th and put a star by it so I could reply with a thoughtful of response as the message was. I realize it did not require a response but I put a star by it in my inbox. Since that time I have been inundated with the holiday emails and missed it. That aside, I did get your message from this morning and the answer is yes. I will be sending some with your order! 😁 Thank you so much for your patience and comments and purchase!

@BlueBearFlutes awesome, I appreciate it. I'd like to get one or hopefully be able to make one special for my daughter for Christmas. I didn't expect her to fall for these like she has. Lol It's something I've always wanted to do and get into, I just didn't realize that it was so much easier than I thought until I ran across your videos. I had seen some flutes in maybe a couple music stores over the years, but they were pretty elaborate and several hundred dollars. I just couldn't justify it, especially not knowing for sure if they were authentic traditional made or imported. I may not have much Cherokee blood in me, but native american history and culture definitely has a big place in my heart. To buy something manufactured and or imported, to me, takes away from that. Each flute or craft made authentic and by hand, has a little bit of that person's love, hard work, heart, and soul in it and even a part of their life went into it. That means a lot to me. I remember enough of my Cherokee family members and remember what they put of themselves into everything did for everyone else, that I've grown to highly appreciate and miss it.

Very well done video... I am just starting flute making, practicing on bamboo first and wonder if it's worthwhile to use on bamboo or not? I won't be at this stage for long but it would be nice to preserve my first flutes for future reference. Again, nice job on the video!!!

Comment - Many drum manufacturers will tell you, ''Don't oil or wax the inner shell, nor, the crucial edge that touches the skin/head.'' The shell is 'bare', Mr. Bear. . . I'm not sure I agree with their recommendation, but, don't know why. Perhaps, oiling the edge might mar the vibrations of the batter-head? Any idea? Another Q - People still speculate about the secret finish of Stradivari violins; along with the, now, ancient curing of the finish through time. Plus - the type of wood, and where exactly on a specific tree type is the wood milled from. I know, that's a tough speculation . . . wanna take a stab at it?

Thoughts on Almond, coconut (nut oils)? Also the Flutes we order from you, do they already come treated? Maybe I missed you saying if it does or not.

@brantburnham39 Hey Brent that's a great question that many of my KZfaq viewers ask! The answer is simple. I am a flute maker who shares his love and passion of making this instrument with other people so that if they want to learn how to make their own they can, however when you purchase a pre-made flute from me, that is what you receive! Recently someone has asked if the flutes I send them are tuned. This is definitely one of the questions I need to address in another video!
