This is honestly the best first season of a Netflix show since Arcane! Between this and Shogun, samurai tv fans are eating GOOD!

Ironically, I first heard about Blue Eyed Samurai from the Arcane subreddit as a recommendation. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this show. Beautiful animation in it's own right.

i have yet to meet someone that loves japanese culture more than me :) but... i didnt enjoy shogun.. they are forcefeeding people japanese things until they just overdo it and everyone just gets sick of it... as for the other two shows.. yeah.. i like arcane the most.. than this one.. shogun is mediocre

When Eiji-sensei/Sword Father says with a smile, “The Heavens throw treasure,” it is raining. Water is a major thematic element. But here the show has the importance of water dovetail with that of the meteorite: the Heavens have sent this thing that “no man can tame,” which refers to the pure, unyielding rock of the meteorite as much as the pure, unyielding water: they are Mizu, her two (seemingly)contradictory halves in perpetual conflict. She is also “treasure,” literally a gift bestowed by the Heavens, like the meteorite and the water, as a catalyst for change. For Sword Father and everyone else. It’s all in her name: We know that ‘Mizu’ means cold water, yes. But there are layers. Depending on the kanji or katakana combination, Mizu also means a blessing, illumination, appearance, and metaphorically refers to something beautiful or impressive, like a pearl( something one might come across in a Japanese seaside village ).

Where did you learn that Mizu meant "cold" water? I learned it from a video game, but it was only speculated on my part, since I've never specifically asked anyone about the cold part.

Michael's doing two of the best animated series on Netflix back to back, holy crap, it's going to be a journey. I love how Jaby and Michael brought up Arcane without them needing to bring down one or the other and treat them as their own (deservedly) fantastic properties. I loved Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai for separate reasons - BES feels more introspective and meditative (which they say in their outro in the middle of me typing this), but both stories highlight just how well a narrative can be done in this medium. Loved the reaction and wtg Cineapals rn for an Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai reaction simultaneously!

I love this show. I don't use the term masterpiece lightly (as many do these days) and I must say that the fifth episode is a masterpiece, although the word that comes closest to it for me is art.

Fun fact, the knife Mizu used at the beginning to cut off the fingers was hers. You can see her signature on it. So he got two of her blades.

Meteorites, especially iron meteorites of the size depicted here, are pretty cool by the time they hit the ground. Although the outside heats up to incandescence in the upper atmosphere, on the inside, they retain the deep freeze cold of outer space, so the outside cools quickly as they slow down in the lower atmosphere. The scientific inaccuracy was showing the meteorite leaving an incandescent tail all the way to the ground.

Got pumped when saw that you started react to this show. One of the best, I've seen in a while. Was kind of sad that there are not many reactions to it on youtube. Will be pumped to see you watch some of the story plots, particular scenes and episodes. Almost "no scene wasted" type of show.

In visualizing Mizu, the creators of Blue Eye Samurai apparently drew upon Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars and Barbra Streisand in Yentl, which is why Mizu looks like an amalgam of the two. In terms of historicity, not only does she look ridiculous, but the entire premise of her wandering freely presenting as a man in this disguise would only draw more attention to her and get her killed. But as cinematic storytelling, it's fantastic and tells us so much about her motivation. And the focal point of her presentation rests in her eyeglasses. While Mizu ostensibly wears these eyeglasses to hide her eyes, there's much more going on there. The lenses on those glasses are tinted orange, which, as I'm sure everyone knows, is the opposite of blue on the RYB subtractive color model. This is wonderful subtext provided by the writers: Mizu is subconsciously trying to negate herself by literally opposing her own eyes, the most obvious indication of her mixed-race nature. Mizu, like the rest of us, suffers from the oldest psychological malaise: she hates who she is because she has been conditioned to conflate WHAT she is with WHO she is. But, like the rest of us, Mizu doesn't understand that she isn't her eyes or her blood or her lack of status, no matter how much what she is influences who she is. And this internal struggle is perfectly set in he context of a fictional Edo, a time and place where everyone, even those outside of social placement, have a place. Yet Mizu does not, and cannot. It's just another layer of brilliance in this masterfully crafted show

And involved a TON of inbreeding. I remember reading an article talking about the genetics of Blonde haired & Blue eyed people, and it stated that if you were naturally both, you could be assured that, somewhere in your family tree, there was at least one instance of cousins hooking up. Even just blue eyes involves some 'close' families, though not, necessarily, incestuous. But there's a REASON Blue BLOOD and Blue EYES go together, genetically speaking.

By comparison there is more genetic diversity in white tail deer populations across state lines than between any two groups of people anywhere in the world. While we tend to think of inbreeding as a bad thing, Homo sapiens’ dominance is due - in no small part - because we’ve continued to pass on successful traits.

Arcane may just be the best animated show ever. Can't know for sure until it ends. This show isn't as good but it's on my list of the best animated shows. The Legend of Vox Machina is also a fantastic show that I like even more than this show but not quite as much as Arcane. It's crazy to think that 3 of the best animated shows I've ever seen are all being made at the same time. Edit: Invincible needs to be on this list as the 4th best animated show Ive ever seen. Avatar, Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Blood of Zeus, Tales of the Jedi are all good shows but not in my top tier list. As a kid growing up in yhe 80's Gi Joe, Transformers, Voltron were all fantastic but the quality of those shows isn't nearly as good as any of the shows I listed.

I believe there's some kind of gene editing that exists plus fertilization into an egg to ensure blue eyes, or any preferred natural color. I suppose one day they'll get it figured out that any colors are possible. I don't know where I learned this, so I'm not providing a source.

I’m also a huge Arcane fan but once I finished Blue Eye Samurai I appreciate so much and it’s so profound. Now I think Blue Eye Samurai is the best animated series of Netflix so far.

@@dm_dude - Arcane is a great show, but it fails in regards to narrative structure and characterization. There are far too many characters we're expected to follow without understanding what is motivating them and what they want to accomplish.
