He loved Mizu when he saw her as something to be pitied. Her vulnerability and dependence on him gave him a sense of self worth, which had been damaged by whatever happened for him to lose his honor. My personal theory is that he was a coward and ran away in battle, which is why he was outcast. Maybe he didn’t turn her in, but was too much of a coward to help. Mizu was a vehicle for him to rebuild his ego, which was robbed from him when she beat him. On the flip side, from Mizu’s point of view she had been suppressing her own competence to play into expectations. When she grew to love him, she let down the charade and exposed her true self… and was immediately betrayed.

Mizu has one of the most heartbreaking stories I have ever seen. This world made her into a monster.

One of the BEST episodes of television I have seen in the last year.

Episode 5 really won me over to the series. It featured three stories in one, each intertwined with its own meaning. It was some of the best storytelling I've seen in a long time. It was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking.

This episode and the one before it are just amazing, and so heartbreaking.

What an experience this episode was When I started the series I was not expecting Mizu to have been married I love how in the story they tell throughout the episode she is both bride and ronin

The parallel storytelling in this episode is incredible, incredible.... and it really pays off at the end when you see the blackened teeth, ahhh!

I think it's clearly the husband, he isn't a coward, 1) the way he road off 2) walking up to her back with sword draw, no other reason to have a sword drawn at that point

I agree with Kat. Mikio fought because it was is job but Mizu take pleasure in fighting, that is what frighten him.

I think it's possible to come up with theories on who betrayed Mizu, using evidence from the episode - I don't think any of them are particularly conclusive - that's probably intentional for one of two reasons - either - it doesn't really matter - not knowing which one it is - is the point - or, my personal favourite - it was *neither* of them - which would make the tragedy even worse.

I think it's very likely he who betrayed her. You can see the evidence on his face at a couple of points. When she looks to him for help, you can see shame rather than fear, indicating he's already betrayed her. Understanding that his trigger point is his lost honour makes his character clear. He has been shamed by his lord; something that has shaped his life dramatically. When Mizu playfully pokes at him, trying to continue the fight, it hits a nerve hence his overreaction in the moment. His character motivations make it clear that she's now crossed a line. On the other hand, Mizu's mother has no reason to betray her at this particular point. It's been some time since she was cut off. She'd be over the worst of the physical withdrawals. There's no driver behind a betrayal from her right now. Great reaction as usual though. Definitely a powerful episode! It was good to get a female perspective - and I think you are 100% spot on - the husband was suddenly put in the position of being powerless - knowing that this other person has the 100% ability to kill him and he could do nothing to stop it.. and she appeared "turned on" by the power... Thats a terrifying situation to suddenly realise you are married to that! That is way more than "humiliated"

Personally, i think the mother turned her in. Part of that is based on future info, but also, she desperately wanted money for her "medicine."

Best episode of the series

Regarding the fight. He did ask to stop the fight "Okay, that's enough." - but she taunted him to continue. "Did you also lose your backbone when you lost your title?" I think the storytelling for his reaction (calling her a monster) is intentionally put into the grey zone between him overreacting, or being scared of a woman he's not known long turning out to be a powerful warrior who gets turned on when she had a sword at his throat.

I think that her mother and her husband together betrayed her, and gave her away!
