It's amazing how many pedestrians still cross the road despite an emergency vehicle coming towards them with lights and sirens blazing.

It never ceases to amaze me how oblivious some drivers are. Yes, cars are more "soundproof" than they once were, and stereos are louder -- but so are sirens, and the array of blue lights is far more noticeable than the single revolving beacon of days gone by, and still some drivers seem completely unaware of an approaching emergency vehicle.

Starting think Europe should adopt the Fire Vehicle laws of the US, where they can legally ram a vehicle if it's refusing/unable to move for them after a period of time.

@seserbcp Perhaps that is because lights and sirens are used excessively. In the UK a blue light is only used in an emergency, and the siren is only used when needed.

I'm amazed. People in the UK is by far more willingly to yield to an emergency vehicle, if you take this an example. I've been in a volunteer fire department in Denmark now for about 6 months, and it's so annoying to be blocked by some youth which has decided to use a pair of plug-in headphones while driving.

You may pass through a red light and treat it as a give way if you are the one responding. There is no relaxation of the law for someone who moves through a red light to let you through, in fact not letting you through anywhere is not an offense. I don't know of anyone who has been prosecuted personally but I have heard stories. Certainly a red light camera would trigger a prosecution but you may well be successful in front of the magistrate to use the emergency vehicle as a defense. If you are a responding vehicle our guidelines would be to turn off the audible warning devices and leave the lights on so you don't panic people and push them through into a potentially dangerous situation. Basically what a lot of people have said already!
@D1MCV
@D1MCV 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Leigh Yes. At 7 mins in the drivers go through the reds to allow the emergency vehicle passage. 3 points and £100 fine. There should be an exemption for this. Otherwise no one will move for the emergency services. Good drive all the same and hopefully no tickets issues to the helpful drivers.

Actually, "999instructor", you do have people like me driving response cars. Response driving (as I was taught, anyway) is all about balacing safety with progression. If I wrap the vehicle on my way to the job, then somebody else has to run to it. If I take another 30s to get there, so be it. I asked a specific question about one element of this guy's technique (good example at 6:50 onward - he forces the waiting traffic into the junction) - have you got anything to add?

Do you need to be so aggressive to make progress in London? In particular, when you come up to traffic waiting at a red light, you're right up to them on the yelp, whereas I'd tend to hang back and turn off the noise to let people sort themselves out without feeling under too much pressure. But hey, I find driving in town aggravating on routine :-)

The only time it's legal to go through a red light is in an emergency (to get out of danger) or if a uniformed police officer directs you through. Other than those two times, you're breaking the law regardless of whether there's an emergency vehicle behind you or not. It's good to see that somebody else knows the craic. I get such dirty looks when I don't move for the police car even though I'd be putting myself & others in danger whilst breaking the law.

@999instructor How many of the jobs you turn out to are *actually* sensitive to 30s, when you get there? For me, it's about one in 10, perhaps fewer. As you know, the other drivers don't have an exemption for passing the ATS on red, and courts are making examples of the drivers of services vehicles who are in any way culpable. This is what I'm trying to understand: I don't work in London often, and on my patch, this approach to lights is too aggressive. Is it normal for London?

I'm not a rapid response driver, but we were being very pushy in queues and red lights weren't we? You could have at least cancelled your sirens when other vehicles had nowhere to go! :/
@KGzII
@KGzII 11 жыл бұрын
It is illegal to go through red lights whatever the case, even if there is an emergency vehicle behind you. It is acceptable to move (to the best of your ability) to clear a path, but emergency vehicles should cancel their sirens to prevent people putting themselves in danger.

@uzijn

Roundabout part was fine & she probably jumped the lights because she wanted to get out of the way of the car, same as to why she tried to go around that car in front of her. A lot of people panic when they see lights & sirens so they do anything in a rush to get out of the way, which sometimes puts them in a worse position, such as here. I blame lack of education more than individuals. I have never once been taught how to react to an emergency vehicle, not even on my driving lessons. Have you?

Saintly Patience must be a job requirement for London police... with that level of traffic, I would have ground my teeth flat! Thought these days that all emergency vehicle drivers,are taught to turn off the two tones at red lights and wait,rather than harass motorists to go through red lights in case it panics them, especialy that camera outside euston fire station (i think thats where it was), sad thing is, there is no law expressly giving emergency vehicles a divine right of way,no law to force people out of the way. But i believe there is a law regarding the obstruction of an emergency vehicle. But the video was superb and superb driving also..

Only if other motorists give way, they cannot force people through. There is no law that says they can go through red lights,as there is no law which forces motorists to let them pass, they must treat red traffic lights as give way.if no one gives way then they cant do much,which in my eyes is so wrong,.

It depends on the type of unit, the type of emergency etc. For example, if I was an armed response vehicle responding to a potential terror threat then I'd blast the bullhorn and not give a toss whether they have brown trousers or not, however if I'm an ERT officer responding to a domestic with Mrs Miggings, I'd ease off the tones. Also depends on your driver level, Level 2+ drivers are more equipped to deal with the danger of a motorist panicking, whereas a Level 3 driver is only taught how to do it safely, not necessarily effectively. Hope that answers your question.

Never worked for any emergency service have you? trying telling the 1000's of people we've saved by moving effectively to scene. 8 mins is all you've got to try and help someone in cardiac arrest, and even if they aren't calls taken are never accurate so we get there asap anyway incase it is serious.
