I love to do mystical backgrounds with crystals and some glowings flowers with the nightsky the drawing process makes you feel like your in the picture. I just love it.

@@Rin-qj7zt I think for a lot of people clear rules can definitely be helpful, but it's the use of those rules/tools that people like me stunt at. That and perspective lines with organic environments is hard for me to wrap my brain around at the moment since there's no obvious "this vanishes like that" thing going on.

I mean, landscape painting is copying from reality, and is that not art? Gatekeeping is dumb. You should only avoid copying from other artists, unless you're doing it to study.

@@CyanFlake i mean that's just like doing a colour-by-number's book. Maybe not a show of skill, but if its relaxing and engaging for a couple of hours then whats the harm? itd be more impressive to be able to draw in an identical style to the disney character but in any pose you want, not just the same pose. Trying to pass off an identical copy, not a stylized/personalized copy or a mastering of style, isn't really that interesting. Though for little kids id say the patience required to sit through the whole process is impressive by itself. Sticking with something that's difficult and boring to get a nice result is a good skill to train when you're small.

Well, then - You can only get better from here on out. :-) Perhaps try the tutorial several more times. With each attempt, pick one thing you want to change about it. Then after you've done all that, compare your final attempt with your first and see how much you've improved.

Same here! At the moment, I'm struggling to progressively change the color of the sky, as it's lighter and almost white when it touches the mountains. It looks like several skies on my painting. Are you happier with your environment now, 9 months later?

You’re such a life saver, I have never been in an actual art class where the teacher teaches. Sounds weird, but in the 6 years of art classes I’ve never once had a sit down to learn. @@blenderguy2935 Well, at least in my experience the teacher left the students with incredibly vague instructions and we ended up teaching each other. I don't think my teacher ever taught me anything, even though I'm certain he taught some students, he just almost never spoke to me.... Bad luck I guess.

@@blenderguy2935 i can understand him tho im in 3d year in an art bachelor and even tho yes i greatly improved it was mostly thx to friends and video on yt more than from teacher (with the exeption of one astonishing teacher) as example landscape we only heard about it in the very first assignment in first year where the teacher just told us to go outside and draw what we see and that it, most lesson were like this just practice with a subject but little to no indication or tips

My uncle went to some art class and dropped out after a semester. He said he was wasting time there. He took a different class after that something related engineering, He said he wants to study something that will atleast guarantee him a job in the future. It's not like his saying art classes are not gonna get him imployed it's just he could've spend more time on more important matters, now he's back doing art he's watching toturials from skill share and he actually learned and improved in a few months than in a class dedicated to art. If u made it here thanks for reading i guess :3

Good luck mate! My recommendation is you start with drawing in ink to really learn how to get the texture and details down first, after doing that painting it would become really easy and fun.

The technical term for it is “rendering,” which is essentially polishing everything in the piece and giving it more texture/detail. It’s really hard to teach proper rendering because it really depends on your familiarity with an object’s textures and your own skill in blending hard edges/soft edges. If you want to get better at rendering, do material studies where you paint balls covered in certain textures (metallic, foliage, lava, fur, etc.) and continue practicing proper blending techniques. Your art will naturally look more polished the more you practice rendering. :)

@@catcactus1234 Thanks for the ideas. I've been searching for tutorials to teach me how to render better (I'm currently in the phase of learning how to blend a lot better. They're all like this, where they skip from the composition part (which I understand) to the final part (that I don't understand). Like I'm watching people blend stuff to make it look good and searching for tips but I guess it's just experience! Sorry for the rambling, but your advice is actually really helpful

@@ciaranm3083 I'd say I agree that rendering isn't really something you can teach any more than the process he already explains in the video. It's the same techniques and processes he was already using, just refining it more and more as you render each layer. That's the part that 'just keep practicing' really becomes applicable.

This is great! In environment design we usually do a bunch of thumbnail sketches & the client chooses a few, sometimes we tighten them into colored options. When a final is chosen, it can take 3-5 full work days to fully render a large environment. When working on game environments, the devs give us geometry wireframe to paint over. Lately I'm doing tons of wireframes bc devs want games to look hand-painted. Idk how, but they take my painting & put it into the game engine so the sprites appear to be in a painted environment rather than ugly 3D

3:35 That's always the part where my backgrounds start to look ugly, I don't understand the concept of lighting and shadows when it comes to big textured surfaces, extremely wrinkly clothes or mountains which usually have a lot of rocks or grass or trees on them. I usually use a watercolor brush to just randomly draw over them and use basic lighting theory (light coming from that direction over there -> drawing light on this side), but it diesn't look like a mountain at all. At 5:45 it already looks perfect lol while mine looks like a green undefined mass

May I see your art? I think I may be able to provide guidance where you are struggling. If there is one thing I have learned it is that the blank page is INTIMIDATING AS HELL! To begin making any kind of background or environment try to break down the major shapes like he does. This is applicable in any environment, like a room, start by drawing a cube to define the parameters of the room, and then slowly add more walls to create a more dynamic shape. Or in his case, add hills and then slowly branch off and begin adding plants. So as soon as you begin adding details like small flowers/trees/bushes/rocks etc, you dont have to worry so much about only having a blob of green on your screen because now you have MANY varying shapes to work with. Its important to *build up* the piece chunk by chunk, otherwise you will be lost as to how to fill in that large intimidating empty space. Secondly, and this is soooo important, you do not have to color texture by hand, you can use specialized brushes to do that confusing work for you. Take time to play around with various shades of greens/yellow and browns. Any colors you commonly see in nature :P. And of course if you are feeling stuck as to how a mountain can be anything more than a circular blob, check out references of grassy mountains for ideas! Some may have corners or shelves, some parts may be more rocky. Its all up to how you can break it down into a more realistic/stylized object. I think I just repeated this entire video LOL oh well tl;dr: Identify the shapes within the larger shape using references, specific brush tools and color, and slowly chip away at a shape until its to your liking :)

Benny you have to believe me; If you struggle with figure drawings please switch up to something else for at least a week. Once you have done different things, your drawings will take the best part of what you have learned experimenting, so try new things! Drawing the same things over and over again will lead to nothing

Yes finally another landscape painting! I'm really enjoying these landscape / storytelling paintings. Are you still continuing the world building series? Because this one felt it belong to that world or universe. Anyway always enjoyed the video, gotta share this to my friends who's wanting to paint landscape much better and effectively.
