Tammy I just want to say Thank you for being unbiased about this. It's refreshing to see people acting mature and real about a subject that tends to be very strongly fought in the community. These are very helpful comparisons for newbies, and while you expose the real differences and point out possible flaws (not necessarily flaws for us who end up customizing them anyway) you also recognize the beauty in both fake and authentic, and the positive aspects of both and that's what people need to know and appreciate, instead of automatically shun them. Some people don't care about collecting official releases and they just want a pretty doll to have fun with so it's important that they make an informed decision when purchasing a Blythe doll. Very well put. I will be recommending this to anyone who's wondering what the real differences are.

I think factory dolls are made from parts that were rejected by Takara during quality checks. So not really stolen, so much as recycled! Great video by the way :)

This was definitely helpful for me. I never knew there were different eye mechs for real ones. I do know about high end fakes en cheap fakes. But the way I see it, Blythes are an empty canvas. You get one all boring and stock and creepy looking, so I give them new eyelashes, new body, paibted eyelids, sleepy eyes, maybe cut their hair etc. To match them to the concept I had in mind. This is a reason for me to never buy real ones. I wonder if I could get a real eye mech somewhere though.

Finally! I find an informative video of the difference. I came across alot of snoody videos stating stock Blythe are better than factory but never really explaining why. I really love custom dolls and Im 100% sure those are the only ones I will want to collect. The artists Ive found who do them mainly use factory doll bases and now I can see why. Im glad to know the differences are nothing to detur me from purchasing my first! Thank you!

I have 2 reals and 2 fakes and I love all of them. The legs are softer and bendy on the fake one and I do agree that the eye color changing sound is louder. I actually like the hair on my fake ones better though.

Thought I might add some interesting doll history. There are records from the 40s thru the 60s of big doll companies, like mattel, Ideal, etc, selling blanks of many of their popular dolls to smaller companies. Mostly fashion dolls, but not Barbie. They sold them to other companies to paint and dress as their own doll lines. I'm sure this also is done by Takara. If you think about it, it's a great source of revenue. Also, IMO, kinda seems like it would be extremely difficult for so many small manufacturers to invest in mold making, wig machines, plastics, painting, etc, of exact duplicates of blythes.

I recently bought myself a "factory" Blythe doll off of aliepress and I have to say I'm very very happy with what I got. She has 13 points of articulation (not counting the ability to rotate the arms and legs and swivel the hip/torso). She is a Blythe head on an azone body which is an obvious indicator that she is fake, but I actually prefer this extra articulation to a stock Blythe. I am even able to change her hands because she came with extra hands. I can tell that she is a quality fake because her skin tone matches throughout the entire body and head. Her skin is a lovely tanned/caramel color. It's nice that fakes have a lot of skin tone options since all the stock dolls I see tend to just be pale. What I also like about my fake is that she has a matte face. I prefer this over the glossy look you see on stock dolls and on some other fakes. I think the glossy look just makes the doll look like she has oily skin. Her face paint/makeup imo looks just as good as a stock doll. Her hair is lovely. Of course, factory dolls have hair in all sorts of colors and styles, but the one I chose has some nice, straight blonde hair with bangs that stop just above her eyes. It's very long, all the way down to her calves. It is very soft and silky to touch. I barely needed to brush it. Her four eye colors are are a silvery grey (looking right), light blue (looking forward), copper brown (looking left), and like a rose gold color (looking forward). The copper brown and the rose gold eyes are only very subtly different in color but I don't mind. I have to pull her string pretty hard in order to change her eyes (it takes a bit of actual muscle), but I don't mind. She of course came naked, but her clothes will be in the mail soon. I'm looking forward to it. The only two criticisms I have on the doll are that her right ankle joint is really stiff so I can't move that foot much at all, and that her head is positioned so that she's looking slightly downward but I can't make her look up. Otherwise I think she's the perfect doll with near perfect quality and I think I prefer factory dolls over stock because they have more variety..and this doll was only $38 USD, which is a lot better than paying $200 for a doll that's less posable and only has a slightly better head.

Very informative. I got into Blythe dolls for the customizing and was wondering if it mattered. I used to collect dolls but that's just too costly, and I'd never mar an original. While shopping for the "fakes," I've noticed that the customized can really go up in prices which are well worth it as the artwork is beautiful. Mohair wigs, customized clothing, beautiful faces and eyes. To me, those surpass the "real" Blythe dolls. I've received my "pieces" and they are well-made in my opinion. One day, the "fakes" may be worth something someday.

Good video. I completely agree about wanting a customized doll to be an authentic Blythe. It’s unrecognizable at the end anyway. Also, fakes come in more skin colors. I prefer to collect dolls that are dark - basically Blythe’s “mocha“ or darker. Blythe just doesn’t make enough mocha dolls!

Great video Tammy, I think you supplied some "real" talk on the subject without being overly biased either way. I come from the BJD world where legit vs. recast is a real hotbed topic. I'm super new to Blythe's but the subject of stock vs. fake doesn't seem to rile the same amount of hackles. In some ways I'm really confused as to why since I think that nobody could continue to believe ALL the tons of fakes you can buy are made of rejected Takara parts. Just plain silliness. Of course many other toy companies are manufacturing various qualities of Blythe fakes at this point. I do think this ongoing idea of the "factory" Blythe makes people feel better about it somehow. I don't know, makes me chuckles a bit though. At any rate I've got two fakies right now, with a strong interest in customization. There's no way I'd buy a stock doll for that. I do have my first stock doll on the way now though and I'm very interested to be able to compare for myself now too.

There is some listings on aliexpress that come with clothes for about £30. However I completely agree, you do have to buy more for fakes. But I think it’s worth it because of the variety and there’s no pressure when customising them too!

A difference that I noticed on the blythe that I have is the skin. On an original blythe is the face is not shiny at all .

Does anyone find that fake blythe tend to have hair loss? It doesn't happen to my real blythe. XD Whenever I just brush their hair with just fingers, I can always pull out a pinch of hair easily. XD
