There have been two previous videos dealing with the unresponsive tachometer on my 1979 R100RT. This third video is the next attempt to resolve the tachometer issue. I am upgrading the instrument housing and upgrading to a KatDash LED light board. This upgrade gives me a chance to get the tachometer out of the housing and do a visual inspection on its components. Perhaps I will be able to identify a problem with one or more components. If the upgrade does not fix the issue I will have to look at a replacement tachometer or repairs to the old one.
A word to the wise.....the plastic in the instrument housing is 40 plus years old. Most likely it has dried, hardened, cracked and crazed. If it is not broken now it probably will break under disassembly or reassembly. Be gentle. Good replacement housings are expensive and hard to find. They are also 40 plus years old. The joys of owning a vintage motorcycle.

Update on malfunctioning tachometer: On a recent ride I noticed the tachometer was showing some readings, anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 RPM's. But the reading did not move up or down with engine speed. The reading would jump up and down.
Also, in this video I found the red and green wires insulation was damaged and you could see bare copper wire through the holes in the insulation. There is a boss inside the framework of the tachometer that has a screw and small metal plate. You can see the boss in the video. There is a groove for the wires to rest in. This is a clamp under which the green, red and brown wires are supposed to be routed. Turns out it is the small metal plate that damaged the insulation over 40 plus years of service when the red and green wires were not routed correctly and subsequently piched by the clamp plate. Surprised that North Hollywood did not figure that out or even see it, nor did they re-secure the wires when they performed their service. Hmmm....
