Yeah Bouncer gets icy like that IF it’s groomed. It should be marked black now because it is all bumped up and often ungroomed.

Hey Joe (Hmmm... good title for a song) I remember in the good old years gone by that all the runs off American Eagle were groomed. You could cruise anything at high speed with no worries. Now the very top of Main Vein and Bouncer are ungroomed and get pretty tough all the time. At least those two get a few bumps above the center village for the hard core folks. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Hope you had a great season. See you again in November. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE out there!

Hi Richard, very informative video on troubleshooting the tachometer! I have replicated your approach, however I get the same battery voltage around 12.5V on pin 10 (signal) and pin 8 (positive). Any idea what may be causing this and how to resolve? Many thanks in advance!
@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 2 ай бұрын
Hello Maydon, Unfortunately, I am not a technical wizard like Brookes. For my video I just reported what resistance and voltage at the pins on my motorcycle were. The results lined up with values that I found on other BMW sites and literature. Fortunately my results indicated the tach was bad in my case. For you it appears there "may be" (maybe not) a wiring issue "somewhere" in the harness and that jumps well beyond my capabilities. Brookes might know more on the possible cause of the higher voltage. Just thinking out your results, it may not be bad that you are getting battery voltage at pin 10. The tach isn't looking for a voltage value (i don't think) rather it is looking at and counting pulses coming from the points. The signal wire sends voltage to the condenser and on up to the coils whenever the points are closed. When the points open the signal should stop. That voltage is coming from the condenser side of the bean can. Hmmm....do you still have a bean can? Maybe your condenser is sick, or your system is more sensitive on the meter and can actually sense 12.5 volts coming up the signal wire. If the signal wire was corrupted with a short someplace I have no idea what the voltage might read, but since you show resistance, I don't think there is a problem with a short in the wire (that signal wire has to go through some pretty intense environments on its way from the condenser up to the coils). Should you decide to try having the tach tested I would suggest going to Palo Alto Speedometer in California. I used them and they did a fantastic job. They really know what they are doing when it comes to our broken antique stuff. Hope that helps. Good luck. Contact me with any other questions you might have. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE out there!

@@richardryer3412 Many thanks for your reply Richard. I forgot to add I have a R80RT from 1985 with electronic ignition. Not sure if that impacts the resistance/voltage I am looking for? The resistance I measured at pin 8 and 10 was .825 for both.

@richardryer3412 4 ай бұрын
Hello Ian, Glad you visited and watched my coil replacement video. Sorry to hear the motorcycle won't restart after the first successful start. Check to see if you are getting spark to the plugs. Don't pull the plug wire from the plug and see if a spark jumps. That's hard on the ignition system and can burn things up. If you have an inductance type timing light you check the flash to the fly wheel when the engine turns over. Check both plug wires for a signal. If you don't have a timing light, you can unscrew a plug and hold the spark plug body against the cylinder or head and see if a spark jumps the electrode gap. If there's no spark something is wrong in the electrics. If there is spark, check fuel and timing. You can also check the wire that comes up from the points to the coil. Mine was old and falling apart. The boys at EuroMoto Electrics might be able to help you with trouble shooting. Good Luck. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE out there!

Hi Starpower, Congrats on being a Zuma Cornice Skier. More terrain than I can handle on that part of Zuma! Make some turns up there for me. Thanks for your observations on Loafer. The IKON app confusion in terrain is probably the proximity of Loafer to Cornice. The two trails parallel each other as can be seen in the first four minutes of the vid. Off to the left you will see ridge line snow fencing and roped pole lines. On the north side of the "barrier" is Loafer and on the south is Cornice. I can see why the IKON tracker is reporting your runs that way. There are several areas along loafer where it is easy to transfer over to Cornice. And I recall a lot of skiers coming in from the left during the run from other places where the barrier is 20 or 30 meters above Loafer. At the four minute mark you can see the vid make a left turn into the tree line. This is where Cornice and Loafer diverge. You can also see from A-Basin's website where the runs are by comparing the Zuma and Beavers trail maps. Hope that makes sense. The top of Loafer and Cornice are on top of each other. They split off from each other as you drop down to tree line. Thanks for visiting and watching the video. A-Basin has done a good job this year so it should be interesting to see how much the new owners try to change Al's vision. Cheers. Rich. Take care and be SAFE out there!

@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 4 ай бұрын
Hello Skies and Skis, You are right about the glacial pace at which Lumberjack moves. Since Lumberjack is a fixed grip lift it runs at the same speed Kokomo in the loading area. Where Kokomo is a detachable chair and can run the haul rope at a much higher speed, the loading speed is probably the same as Lumberjack's. That way beginner skiers don't have to deal with the dangers of being injured trying to use a high speed fixed chair such as Blackjack in Copper Bowl. The solution would be to replace the Lumberjack fixed grip system with a detachable chair system Like Kokomo's. The chair services great beginner terrain, it just takes a long time to get up the hill. Have a great spring. Make a few turns for me. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE!

Hey there Richard! Thanks as always for the vid. I’m curious, would you say Soliloquy might be more of an advanced green? Asking more for my wife, who’s still quite the beginner.
@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 5 ай бұрын
Greetings Gitano, For the most part Soliloquy is a fairly easy and uniform green run. The top is pretty mellow till you get past Copperfield on your right. Then it gets a little steeper, but nothing crazy. There is one roller right around the right hand turn off to Jacque's Pique that gets a little steeper. Problem is, right after the little downhill pitch there is a short rise to get to where Soliloquy splits around a larger tree island. If you don't carry some speed into the rise you won't make it to the top and you will have to side step, herring bone, or walk to the top of the rise, maybe 10 or 20 yards. Knowing that, you can plan ahead on a short walk up without skis and it is no big deal. Going to the right side of the tree island is a little steeper than the majority of Soliloquy, but it is usually groomed so you can make lots of turns. If you go left of the tree island you go down to an area where Colman's Retreat, A Black Diamond, comes in from the left. The pitch is not as steep as to the right, but the snow surface usually seems more torn up from the expert skiers coming out of Colman's. This area is not as nicely groomed as the section of trail on the right side of the tree island. Once the trails join back to one trail it is nicely groomed and easy going back down to Timberline Express. So if your wife can handle a little bit of steeper beginner terrain. In the steeper stuff, she will probably do okay. Just ski SLOWLY in front of her so she can follow and not get left behind (a confidence thing) or let her lead and you follow, letting her do her own thing with you keeping an eye on her. Out of a mile and a half of trail there is only 50 to 75 yards of "harder" terrain. Hope that helps. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE and be there for her.

Carefree Trail is in good shape. There are a couple of thin spots about half way down the blue section, but you can see them a stay away to save your ski bottoms and the snow. The trail sees grooming daily or every other day, depending on the surface. Lack of natural snow is the main culprit for reduced grooming, which is evident across the mountain. Pray for snow.

Timber Ridge is kind of a mixed bag so far this season. The top of the ridge is in good shape as the snow fence catches plenty of snow. The narrow transition from the ridge down to the trees is iffy day to day. The groomers only visit about every third day so the snow drifts in and gets very drifty and very bumpy. After getting through the challenging conditions with very little room to turn you get into the wider are in the trees. There the snow is a little thin in places and you can see the dirt coming through in a few spots. Not a very good winter so far for the steeper runs with no man made snow. Fun run right after it's been groomed, but not much fun by the third day.

@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 6 ай бұрын
Hey Starz and Knights, Rosi's Run is a groomer so it will be bump free. There are some sections on the far right that may not get groomed so you may find some big bumps right next to the trees on the right side. Rosi's Run is one of the runs that is used in the Copper Mountain speed center for all the World Cup ski racers in the late fall months. So it is actually man made ski racing snow which translates to "white ice". Right now with all the fresh snow the surface will really take an edge. After all the fresh is skied off the surface will become very icy and easy to lose and edge. So early in the morning when the corduroy is still there, the skiing should be excellent. Just keep the speed down because there are some really nice pitch changes and the world just falls away. So. Ski Rosi's Run first thing while the corduroy is still good for edging. Make lots of turns and watch the speed till you get used to it. Stay away from the trees on the right. Once you get used to it you will do just fine. Always be ready for the race snow where the skis slip out from you. Minimize the effect by making your turns where all the surface snow has been scraped into one area. Avoid turning on the bald spots where it is just the race snow. You'll figure it out pretty quickly. Once you get comfortable with Rosi's Run, take a look at Triple Zero and Hodson's Cut to see if they have been groomed. If they are groomed they are a really fun run. Same thing with Triple Treat if it is groomed.

can you recommend a couple of less challenging blue runs at Copper after doing the greens by Lumberjack?
@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 7 ай бұрын
Hi Nancy, Thanks for the visit. Lumberjack has some of the best beginner runs in Colorado. I think a good progression would be to move over to Center Village and get on the American Flyer chairlift. At the top you will want to head straight back down on High Point and then veer right to take carefree back down to the base of American Flyer. Admitted, it's all green except for the last pitch of carefree, but it is doable. That run will get you warmed up. Take American Flyer back to the top and take the cat walk over to the top of Timberline Express. Take Windsong Trail down to the bottom of Timberline Express. Ride Timberline back up and Tame American Flyer Trail back Down. From the top of Timberline you can also take a look at Copperfield. Usually the right side of Copperfield is groomed so it is also a nice run. All the runs I mentioned are usually groomed nightly. If the Sierra lift is running and Timber Ridge is open, do that. It is groomed and the views are amazing. If you go up American Eagle a good groomer is Main Vein back down to the base although it is a popular run and gets a little crowded. My all time favorites off the Superbee chair are Collage and Andy's Encore. Both are groomers with lots of room. Andy's Encore does have some steeps pitches but there are no bumps. Collage is a nice runner top to bottom with no big pitches. Hope that helps. Check out the area map to see where these runs are. Then go have some fun. Main Vein may be the only one that is currently open. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Have a great weekend. Make a few turns for me. Cheers Rich. SKI SAFE!

Hey Richard, I love your videos! I can get a pretty good idea of the terrain in Copper Mtn by watching them. Going there in late march 2024 with my wife to try and teach her how to snowboard. Which chairlift do you suggest we start on that could be easy for her? Tks!
@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 9 ай бұрын
Greetings Fabricio, Thanks for the visit and wonderful comment. Glad the video format helped you. Let's assume that your wife has no snowboarding experience when you arrive at Copper Mountain. If she takes lessons from the ski area staff, you will start in the West Village at the ski school. They will take excellent care with her, so no worries. If you are the instructor, your first terrain choice on the mountain will be the Green Acres. You can get to Green Acres from the Center Village by a short walk to the East or using the snow cat shuttle service. Green Acres is several acres of very flat, well groomed snow with a very low pitch. Best orientation terrain on the mountain. When your wife gains comfort in sliding, turning and stopping you can take the shuttle over to the West Village where the beginner terrain is located. There you will use the Kokomo Express to get access to the Lumberjack chairlift. Excellent terrain is available from the top of both chairs, but the runs are less crowded from the top of Lumberjack. So start with either West Ten Mile or Prospector. Both runs are very flat, well groomed, low pitch and very long. So you will not be yo-yo skiing. Be forewarned that the Lumberjack chairlift is really slow. But the runs you access are great. When you are ready to explore more of the mountain, take the Woodward Express chairlift, then traverse down to the Timberline Express chairlift. From the top of the Timberline Express you can take Soliloquy down to the top of Roundabout and ski all the way to West Village, where you started. If skill progression allows, go to Center Village. You can use the American Flyer Chairlift to access longer beginner terrain that runs from the top of American Flyer, back down to the Center Village. Hope this information helps. Copper Mountain has great terrain and wonderful views of the Rocky Mountains. Let me know if you have any additional questions. By the way, The snow conditions will be amazing in March and you will have beautiful Bluebird days. Cheers, Rich. Be SAFE!

She only has a couple of days of experience when we went on a family trip to Ruidoso, New Mexico, but we didn't spend much time alone on the slopes because we were there with our kids. She can already traverse on mellow runs and do the falling leaf, but we need to work on her turns and on stopping on steeper terrain. The board is also available from EuroMoto Electrics ( www.euromotoelectrics.com/searchresults.asp?Search=Katdash&Submit= ). I think they are also available from MAX BMW. How do you like the dual plug conversion? Thanks
@richardryer3412
@richardryer3412 Жыл бұрын
Hi Clayton, Sorry for the delayed response. The dual plug conversion did help with gas mileage. Overtime, the biggest affect on gas mileage was the degradation of the Bing carbs performance. After I had Bing rebuild the carbs, the mileage jumped way up. Overall, I think there was a small improvement in gas mileage per gallon. The dual plug system puts less voltage through the points so they don't burn very much at all. With the dual plugs on each side, if one side or the other dies, you can pull a plug wire from the functioning side and put it on one of the plugs on the dead side to get both cylinders firing again. And timing is only changed a little. It is very maintenance free and reliable, so I like it. The bottom plugs are shorter threads because the head has less material to put threads in to. As a result I believe you have to be much more careful when changing plugs so that you don't strip out the plug threads on the bottom side of the head. If I had to do it again, I probably wouldn't do it, But having done it gave me a little boost in performance and good reliability. It has been fine for 375,000 miles. Thanks for dropping by. Have a great summer, keep the rubber side down and be SAFE! Cheers, Rich

@@tobymiles3365 Definitely give Triple Zero a try. The trail crews usually groom Triple Zero and Hodson's cut once a week so the bumps don't get to big. Don't fret working on your Dad's bike. You will have a friend in it forever. The BMW is very simple to work on and you don't need a lot of special tools. You can almost tear down the bike with what you find under the seat in the tool box. And there are a ton of videos that will get you through almost everything. Hint: When you start the tear down, put the nuts and bolts in baggies with a note where they came from! Take pictures of the wiring. Post a picture of the bike. I'd love to see it.
