BMW 330d Misfire Unsteady RPM Lumpy Sound

2009 E90 BMW 330d Misfire ONLY on cold start. The smell of unburnt diesel emanates. Idle when the car is warm can now be a little rougher than usual and on cold starts, it now almost always misfires. This is not the worst it has been - I will try to upload a video when I catch it next fully misfiring. When you start driving, all is normal again.

I'm pleased to report the 330d has been fixed and is running well again! The problem - Glow Plug Control Unit. New one was fitted. :D

@LucianCLS We took it to the dealer and they probably would've seen the fault code. In the OBD II diagnostics we have, I believe it shows that all 6 (or all 4 in your case) glow plugs have failed. This, though knowledge I assume is interpreted as a glow plug control unit failure. When warm and in traffic, it stank of egg which was sulphur, so it also had excessive emissions. I think they weren't coming on when they were supposed to do and coming on when they weren't required, possible overheati

@LucianCLS how do u know if its the Glow Plug Control Unit ? does it apear in diagnostic software ?

Hi, I've got the same problem with my E92 330D LCI. Did you replace the glow plug control unit on its own or did you replace the glow plugs as well? I'm thinking about replacing the control unit first but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. INPA shows that the control unit is faulty... Thanks Pat

Glow plug control unit replaced - diagnostics showed that all 6 had failed but they were fine so weren't replaced. If it's not that, check fuelling - injectors/pump/rail/etc

I have same problem on my F01, I changen all glow plugs and control box, nothing happens, I rather thing it is EGR on Exhaust pressure sensor

I’ve got the same problem on my 330d was it only on a cold start that you got the rough idle

my 320D is doing the same thing ! it starts ok even at -9C celsius but about 2 seconds missfires .

Interesting, I've just uploaded a video of my 530d GT doing what seems to be the same thing. Will check my diagnostic unit to see if it's reporting anything.

Hi Ian, my issue was a faulty glow plug control unit. On the diagnostics, that will probably show as all 6 have failed.

Thanks, however my diagnostics aren't showing anything at all. Tried two different diag units too.

Ian Milner that's possible not evry scan tool can read the codes for the glow plug module you need dealer tool to see those

@SomeRandomer123 it was the glow plugs check out my channel for videos of before and after i changed the glow plugs ...
