BMW 6-SERIES WINDSHIELD WASHER AND WASHER PUMP FIXES

Salt on the winter roads and the windscreen washers gave up - a feeble squirt, just enough to smear the salt across the windshield and then nothing. The windscreen nozzles are not like the old ones - you could poke those with a pin to get them going again - but not on these fan-types.
The pump and washer tank is hidden away in the front fender (bumper), that makes things a bit tricky, but I will show you had to get simple access without removing the front wheel.
This video goes through the complete windshield washer system from pump to washer nozzles and how to fix any part of it. This job was done on an BMW E64, but the same procedure can be used on any car of the same vintage, E61, E63 etc.

Yes Bobby, I kept the hose in the filler to flush the tank for a good 10 minutes until it was clear.

Just a follow up. It's the nozzles. The pump is working and fluid comes out of the hoses once disconnected from the nozzles..Thanks you..Now to figure out how to remove the plastic piece that holds the connector next to the nozzle. Thanks again!

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation UPDATE: I was able to remove the nozzles but the age of the plastic was apparent. The holder part of the connector broke off as I was attempting to remove them, Maybe that's why people just replace the complete nozzle set up. I cleared the clogged spray nozzles with a few light sprays of brake cleaner. Not sure how they got clogged in the first place. The 645ci always stays in the garage. If anyone reads this, I suggest attempting to clear the nozzles while they are still in place without disconnecting the electrical harness so the tabs do not break on removal. Then just plug the elbow back on and test the nozzles. Thanks again!

i have the f13 6 series and cant open the bonnet. i assume its very similar. any ideas please? pulling the latch only opens the drivers side. its stuck

Timm great video again. I removed the pipe at the elbow used my tyre compressor with a small tapered adapter into the pipe then filled the tank with very hot water and back blasted with air to clear filter. So far so good

Good plan Gareth - I would expect you blew the filter off the grommet as it only pushes in - still, a fix is a fix!

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation You did a great video as I thought you had to remove wheel, I’ll see how it goes too. Another one I had recently for possibly a future Video yiu could do. I had drips of water on both sides coming in when raining near the A Pillars. Did some online reach and Got some rubber treatment Gumme Fledge and treated all the convertible rubbers/seals and seems to have solved issue.

Hi Tim, firstly, many thanks for your channel, very enjoyable and informative. I hope you can help me with a small problem i have on my much loved 645 ci 2004. I have owned it, and taken good care of it since 2009 and it has been a wonderful motor. Recently my stereo developed an intermittent fault, turning off and back on, and sometimes off for hours, then days, and finally it stopped altogether. My question is, i can buy a complete working unit secondhand, and it looks pretty straightforward to install, but will i need any codes for it to work? Or main dealer help? Or should it just work? Getting fogged up widow screen all the time any ideas not the drains as I’ve checked them carpets seem dry just getting a lot of condensation???

Get your A/C working, it will dry the carpets for you. No need to have it on cold, a working A/C dries the air as it enters the car, that then will absorb moisture from the carpet.....

Hello Tony, the problem is most likely the pump itself. They crack at the bottom and it looks like the hose connection is leaking.

There is a main washer tank in E39 540 located right side of the vehicle behind the front right wheel. I'm pretty sure one has to lift up the vehicle and remove the wheel from the car to be able to manipulate around there to replace some pumps or clean stuff. Or has one? I know one of my pumps there is failing, probably two of them as they seem quiet. There is another one, a third one in the engine bay for "intensive cleanig", and this one is working fine so the nozzles are fine as well. What an enjoable bmw repair it will be!! Ha ha I cannot wait it! :)

Yes, the E38 moved the washer tank to the wing area just to make life harder. The E31 has both the normal and intensive tanks under the bonnet - AND has a reservoir in the boot (trunk) if headlight-cleaning is optioned!

The smaller engines are more reliable than the V8's that's for sure!

Yes, I've got them on the Mini, perfect with all this mud around - better grip in the cold but slightly noisier and will not last as long - but could get the car out of some tricky situations. Once the weather warms up it is better to use standard tyres such as the Falken's I have on the big BMW's

There may be an easier way. Syphon the tank dry then fill it with very hot water and a good amount of VWP steriliser (I use it for beer making). Leave overnight and syphon the lot out, maybe fill and clear again to be safe. VWP is harmless and removes grot amazingly well.
