BMW have just released a brand new coupé version of their glamorous 6 Series convertible. We test the 640d uber-diesel that promises to not only be the biggest selling 6 Series of all, but offer an incredible mixture of power, fuel economy, luxury and excitement.

"Just as fast, but twice as economical as its rivals" I regularly drive this car (Im a plater) and its true the combination of performance and economy is astounding !! Even I could afford to run it there's no compromise unless you made the mistake of going for the convertible

I've got a bmw...never thought I would but I live in Germany and this car makes total sense. Diesel is 113.9 euro per litre..yes you read it correctly...they arent banning the stuff like the UK media portrays. So much so I'm going to get one of these next.

I've had a F30 320d for about 6 months it's a brilliant car, I'm waiting for the 640d Grancoupe to go down in price then I'm going to buy one bmw 2 sweet

313bhp is very impressive for a 3.0 diesel engine! But I'd love to see if it can actually get anywhere near that 51mpg in a typical driving because its well known that "official" MPG figures are often totally unrealistic. Although to be fair even if it only did 40mpg that would still be good for a car of that size and power.

Stage 1 remap on this baby will give you 400 bhp and 572 lb ft of torque. Power? Eat ur heart out....

Best thing about this car is the fact that this engine will be fitted to the all new F30 3 series... bringing the price down.. and most important.. the fun UP.. with the body of the 3 series over 200 kg lighter that that of the 6 series... more performance, sharper response, better acceleration, more practical ( 4 doors ) ... just perfect... can`t wait for it.. :)

Because they used to be on Channel Five, but im not sure what happened because Discovery Channel is taking over, and they will start their 21st series around September..... which is now!

anyone have a rough idea what 55 mpg in britain translates to in US? I know it's not just a simple conversion of imperial gallons to US gallons, but that there's the testing cycle or something or another.

I wonder why they use a straight six engine, does it not really matter? I was under the impression that a V6 would be more efficient as it was a smaller block with a lower, more centralised mass? however that being said, I know sweet FA about engine production!

Well, BMW are known for their I6 engines so it's probably marketing as much as anything but an I6 is lighter than a V6 and a bit less complicated as you only have one head (and cams etc), it's also smoother as it's perfectly in balance. A V6 is well balanced (as long as it's a 60 degree V6...) but not perfect, hence the need for balancer shafts on some (e.g. Mercedes 24v V6). You are right, V6 is shorter (I don't think it's volumetrically smaller...) and more 'square' shaped so easier to fit under the bonnet (especially if it's trranversley mounted) and puts the weight further back compared to an I6.

Yes, but this is web show with Graham, this isnt tv show which is 30min or so long. I thought the point was that Graham would continue with these web clips while Tiff, VBH, Jason Plato make the tv show.

How about the Merc 250 CDI Bluetec engine...................150KW/500NM from 2.1L 4cyl. tdi..............and substantially cheaper that this.

Why do you think that Fifth Gear is a bigass tv show? Also, the date is Dec 2011. And the quality is fine by me, since the budget for the video isn't large anyway. Also, this is a free video with no ads and you are complaining.

Nice vid, however u're only talking ab. "incredible mixture of power, fuel economy, luxury and excitement.". Show us how it really drive, for ex. pack it with friends, bags and skies in roof pack and then push it on track! Would be much more reliable than talking...
