Hi
This as most of you might know, is my E65 730d...
The other day, missus rang me to pick her up, because the car failed to start... upon arrival, I immediately established that the battery was drained... jumped the car with the van, car started just fine... but then realised that the battery voltage with the engine running was only about 11 volts... so charged the battery with the van for about 45 minutes, enough to drive the car back home... (she was not that far from home...)
Started to investigate the problem, and here is the result...
Hope you enjoy the video.
Any questions or comments put them below.
Like always, thank you for watching!

Done this job myself. I used plumbers pipe grips and placed on the lip of the pulley with a sidewards push on them to appose the socket undoing the bolts (if that makes sense) can bruise the pulley but its scrap anyways. Hope this helps your viewers.

@@LMAutoRepairs That pulley needs to be changed regullary (4-5 years ?). If I remember correctly there is a mention in the service book on when to change it. Buying second hand in this case could be a bad ideea as you will not know when it will fail next.

Hello, I have the same problem but I haven't started the repair yet. The alternator does not charge current, max 11V. First, I will check the alternator if it's his fault. In my opinion, it is not always the fault of the pulley because if it was damaged, it would be poor power steering? The alternator makes little resistance and the power steering pump more. For me, the support is normal, so I dismantle the alternator and check on the machine whether it is charging

I think this issue is sadly very common on BMW diesels. A friend once phoned me saying the battery light was on on his 2011 320D. Drove 5 miles to see me with the light on. I expected the alternator to have failed like you. Peeked in and initially I only saw the belt on top of the floor and I thought the belt had broken off. Then I saw the crank pulley was missing! I'm glad it did not cause damage to anything else and just fell off. My friend was lucky. Thanks to the powerful AGM battery which I had replaced a few months before, we were able to drive to a local garage to get it sorted. Personally I would not use after market or used for a part like this, as it's the rubber that corrodes and sometimes they can fall off while rotating at speed and cause damage. Not criticising your choice of course :) My friend's car only had 112K miles on it so quite poor of BMW I thought.

Replacing the Idler Pulley every 60K miles isn't that bad. It's a 150€ part. You can't have a car and not service it. BMW's just have more tech on than average car so they require more maintenance.

If I were you I wouldn't use a locking pin under the starter to lock the crankshaft in order to replace the crankshaft pulley, especially in an inline 6 engine. With the crankshaft locked at the flywheel side, applying torque on the front side of the engine can actually twist and crack the crankshaft. Using the locking pin may be fine for things like replacing the timing belt, but for any heavier work involving twisting torque I would not recommend to use that pin.

Ok, unless the pulley is made to bu put back in a special position as to the correct point on the crank, a good fix for now is smear black SIKAFLEX builders fixing "glue" on both the shiny bit of the pulley and inside the rubber bit of the pulley and carefully turn the pulley back onto it correct position .. leave to dry then the sikaflex glues it tight again..I never knew of this once years ago on a v6 honda legend pulley so drilled and tapped a hole from the bottom of the V into the smaller pulley then put a counter sunk bolt in to hold it together.. but SIKKAFLEX wins every time now...When making these pulleys they just bond them with rubber in the first place anyway.
