There is absolutely no doubt that the designers at BMW excelled themselves with the interior design of the E31. It is the perfect match of form and function, a real work of art. Unfortunately, there seems to have been an awful mix up between BMW and Massey Ferguson when the steering wheel was added. Somewhere there is a farmer steering his tractor with a soft-leather rim and /M badge nestling in the lower spoke, meanwhile we 840ci owners got the tractor steering wheel!

This video goes through the exact procedure to swap-out steering wheels - which clock-spring to use, and which air-bag is suitable - it's not hard to do get right and all explained here! This routine is very similar is swapping steering wheels on The BMW E32, E34 and E36

Watching these vids takes me back to an 840Ci I had use off many years ago. It’s also making me think perhaps buying an immaculate 840 may be better than a DB9. Subbed.

I've got a little off topic, guys. Do you know another british channel called BMW Doctor? Guy has 50k+ subs but he seems to be extremely rude man who judges others only by numbers. He can't take any kind of critisism. I strongly advise you to avoid it. Timm's channel is the way all BMW owners should be. I may be a bit pissed off but we don't really need people like that guy who are driving those bad stereotypes about our beloved brand. Btw Timm, your channel is severely undersubbed ;) Really decent content here regularly.

One of the 1st things I did in my 95 hellrot 540i6 was swap in an e36 mtech wheel. Agree that the factory wheel is atrocious. Adding to the injury is the fact that the wheel had no tilt function. As always, thanks Timm

There are two clock springs. The one mounted to the wheel (e31 and e36) and the one mounted on the wheel (e46, late e39). If you like multifunction use the first gen e38 and e39 wheel.

you can hook up the ibus directly to the becker 4769 or 7469 and it works perfectly. if you like hands free phone call you can connect e46 e39 Bluetooth ULF to the ibus and voila. Becker shows the phone number. no access to phone book tough. ibus cd changer can be hooked up asweel. that all works. the tempomat will work if you rewire a bit. instead of the tempomat stick you need the MFL Modul 8352494. for more info write an email

Thank you, and yes, it was! Unfortunately, on cars that see the outside world (and there's many that don't), the leather shrinks and can be seen to draw back from the windscreen area - not a great look!

Hey Timm, just about to embark upon this replacement for my e32 740iL - there is a single use nut behind the steering wheel - do you replace that each time you take the wheel off? Cheers! Tim

The only nut you need to remove is the one that holds the steering wheel on - and that's not single use

Hey Tim. Followed this guide step by step, when swapping wheels on my 94 E34 540i. Unfortunately the horn does now not work. I grounded the blue wire, and soldered the brown, as shown in the guide. Also checked the fuse, which is not blown. Any idea what could cause this?

Hey Timm, do you think you can do a video on charcoal canisters and how the evap system works. I'm having trouble starting my 840ci and I think it's the fuel tank ventilation valve, but I don't know if it's different from an 850ci or not. I know on an 850ci they have fuel tank vent valve on one of the rear wheel wells, is the true for an 840ci as well? I understand the purge solenoid is ontop of the charcoal canister as well. The tank ventilation system will not stop the car starting - at the most it will lean out the mixture if the canister is full of holes! Long cranking is usually caused by loss of fuel pressure between the FPR and the fuel pump - more noticeable if left overnight but should start straight away when warm. Tim, any way to make a 2001 4 spoke e38 steering wheel work on a 95 e38? clock spring issues, the clockspring is attached to wheel on the 95 model. thanks

The main problem with steering wheels fitted to the facelift is that they are dual-stage and can't be used on pre-facelift models

Great video. I bought the steering wheel on eBay you recommended to fit to my 1992 850 as i hate the 4 spoke one. Got all the way through the installation and noticed my Airbag connector is different. It doesnt match the E36 connector. My E31 airbag wire is BLUE and BROWN with a big orange connector that goes into another orange connector with a Stripey BLUE and BROWN wire. Is it just a case of pinning RED and WHITE wire from the E36 airbag into my original orange connector block? if so which wires should I link together? Thanks Timm and I hope you can help as I currently have the wheel off my car! Cheers Tej

I've been very pleased with refurbished E36 wheel for my E31, sold by eBay seller "Tainik". He also sold me an excellent refurbished M-tech wheel for my E30. (*no affiliation to the seller*)

Dear Tim , do you advise to buy the steering column switch bracket part no. 32311162088 with the locating pin on the left while switching the ordinary 4 spoke steering wheel to a m technic 3 spoke one? This OEM part cost almost nothing so its not a big investment. In our video you mentioned you will come back to this point of locating pin bit you did not. Thanks for some advice how to handle this subject. Best regards from Poland. I love your channnel and it helped me a lot durring me E31 9 months’ complete restoration.

Both the times I did the job I used the original bracket and tie-wrapped the loom from the clock-spring to the vacant pogo mount - and that works just fine. I wouldn't have thought that changing the bracket would be that tricky - but in my opinion, not needed!
