The battery light on the dash of my 1998 BMW 540i started to flicker. Instead of buying a pricey replacement alternator, I opted to replace the $34 voltage regulator which is located on the back of the alternator.
This process is for the air cooled alternators on the early M62s. Starting in 1998 when they added VANOS to the M62, they also switched to a water cooled alternator which is not as serviceable.

The whole video talks about the brushes not the voltage regulator... but yeah, part of the assembly. I just bought 2 brushes for $7 and used the same old voltage regulator.

Great idea, I wasn't even aware you could buy the brushes individually. Where did you buy them from?

First of all I just want to point out this will involve soldering. Secondly, it's hard to find the right parts. After long research on the proper alternator I still couldn't find the right part number but I ordered the graphite brushes for Bosch alternator on Ebay. They were actually wider than the shaft in the voltage regulator, so I had to file them down - carefully. Had I known this I'd probably spend the the extra $20 for the whole regulator. :D

At least you got to maintain the genuine Bosch regulator, I'm sure you'll get a lot more life out of it.

What symptoms in your car led you believing it was the regulator??

Most European cars from the time uses the same Bosch alternantors, I believe the internals are the same. Apparently, only the mounting points on the outside are different. Therefore, the voltage regulator will likely be the same as long as you have the right amperage.

Hello, my alternator has been refurbished before around 25k KM and now i an experiencing 14.9-15v while driving and 14.9 when idling with most electronics off do you think it needs a new regulator ?

That does sound a bit high but I would try measuring with a second meter to confirm before I did anything. Usually an unregulated alternator puts out a lot more then 15 volts. What made you decide to check to voltage?

@@TrulyMotors mind you this is using the cluster test which deffinelty would be showing 0.1 to 0.2 less and while driving with everything i turn on including ac and seat heaters i still get 14.7-14.9 constantly flickering between those numbers and never 14.8 at idle with electronics off its 14.9-15 flickering constantly so is there a reason for it to be anything else than a regulator because i would just change it out to be safe if that is the most probabale cause

Great news. Mine started having the same symptoms as your on my original 05/96 build. Actually it’s been going on for a while with the MID display going dim and back to normal. Just occurred to me I need to figure out something ASAP as the battery light turned on the other day. I’m going to try this first since the bearing on my original one does not have play or noise yet.. 06/96 build with 263k. Made in Great Britain. “They don’t make them like they used to”.
