►The 2012-2015 BMW F30 with the N20 engine features a plastic valve cover, unlike the aluminum ones of BMW's past. Over the years and countless heat cycles, this plastic valve cover can warp, become brittle and crack. All of these are known to cause oil leaks around the valve cover gasket.
If your BMW N20 valve cover remains in good shape, you can sometimes get away with replacing just the valve cover gasket. In this video,
Gareth Foley, FCP Euro's BMW Catalog Manager, replaces the valve cover gasket on a BMW F30 328i as well as the various other related gaskets such as the high-pressure fuel pump gasket.

Thank you for posting this well documented video! It was a major money saver for my 2015 X1. It took me almost 8 hours, but at least an hour of that was installing the vacuum pump. Having a good inspection mirror and lighting is a must. I had unknowingly bumped the vacuum pump input shaft and spent an hour messing around with timing positions because I couldn't see the camshaft interface clearly. It is a complex process so I highly recommend taking pictures before and during disassembly, particularly for hose and cable routing, so you're not wasting time installing something only to uninstall, reroute lines and reinstall. Although the my X1 engine is the same variant, some of the cable routing was a little different that the sedan shown in the video. Watch the video at least a few times before starting, photo document what you're doing, keep your parts and tools organized during the process and you should be fine.

@@fcpeurohi there i live in the uk with a bmw 330e b48 engine, bmw did the diagnosis and came back with expansion tank replacement and rocker cover gasket? Both done still oil leak underneath eventually msg on dashboard coming up oil very low. Leak coming from underneath and smoke coming from cat .any ideas could it be a small part underneath?

Just finished this job today with a kit from FCP. Took me about 8 hours total but I don't do this type of work often so I went slow. Here's some things I learned along the way... My N20 is from 2012 with 70K miles. With the valve cover off it was obvious there was some weeping from the back lower corner. The existing gasket was still in good condition so I suspect if I had simply re-torqued the cover bolts it would have been enough to fix the problem. So that's worth a try before you spend any further time or money on this venture. Other folks recommend replacing the whole valve cover since the leak may be related to a fracture in the plastic. A new value cover comes with most of the gaskets pre-installed and can be had for about $200 from some sources. The going rate for labor on this job is apparently $500-600. Just something to consider, especially for high mileage cars. For the O2 sensors connectors, there is one tab on a long side of each connector that needs to be pressed in. Inside the tab housing the tab is like a see-saw so the other end of the tab lifts away from the connector and releases the wiring plug. The other thing to note is that the two connectors are color-coded and keyed differently, so you don't need to worry about remembering which plug goes into which socket. I broke one clip so used a zip-tie to secure the connector on reassembly. After loosening all the bolts, my valve cover was still firmly stuck in place. I got it free by placing the end of a short stick of wood (hammer shaft) at various bolt locations and tapping it lightly with a hammer. Do NOT try to prize the cover off with a screw driver or other metal wedge/chisel. The engine block is made of soft aluminum and you will likely damage the mating surface between the block and the valve cover. Don't miss this chance to check the timing chain tension and condition of the plastic chain guide. This is the main big problem with these engines especially for models pre 2015 when the guides where much more prone to disintegration and the timing chains prone to stretching. Overall this job was pretty much as difficult/easy as it looks in the video. Removing and installing the vacuum pump was OK thanks to the suggested tools and the advice to leave the shaft in the same position when it is removed. The re-installation of the fuel pump was uneventful - I just bolted it down incrementally moving from one side to the other. If I had to do this job again I reckon could do it in half the time. A big thanks to Gareth and FCP for putting this stuff online and making it much easier than it would otherwise be. At one time I spent $80 on the Bentley service manual for this car and it was a complete waste of money. FCP may not have the cheapest parts or kits but I have come to feel that it's important to support people who put the effort into showing us how to to the job.

@@joshuainsyxiengmay8800 that sounds like a great way to crack an old valve cover that isn't cracked. Replace an $80 gasket set, or risk having to purchase a $500 oem valve cover. Why people buy BMWs then try to go as cheap as possible blows me away.

Excellent video that covers all the details. After going through this myself on a 2015 X1 with the N20 I learned a valuable lesson the hard way. Unless you don’t value your time replace the valve cover! It’s worth spending the few hundred bucks up front. On the X1 the engine bay is tight and the job took all weekend. When I was done the leak persisted. I punted and went to the dealer. The dealer never reuses the old plastic covers as part of their policy. They are known to warp and crack and that was the original problem with mine. With the modern plastic motor like this one I’ve adopted the “replace all plastic parts if they are hard to get to” paradigm. These plastic parts are not made to last and turn brittle or warp with the heat cycles.

Spectacular instructional video. I love the graphics popping up on the screen with the bolt types and sizes and the torque pattern for the valve cover. The list of tool required was also very helpful, as I didn't have some of those. Very well done! This will save me a lot of time and money.

I just had this replaced in my N20 328i at 112k miles. I did the gasket and cover. Thanks to this video, I knew eventually I would just have my trusted independent mechanic do it 😂 and was ready when the time came. Didn’t want to deal with this and didn’t have the time. Great video !!

@@Lopes12676 In terms of the engine, only Spark plugs and coils at 100k. I have to do the Sepertine belt and pulleys and I already bought the oil filter housing gasket to do it soon before it starts leaking. In terms of Suspension, recently I did the following: Lower control arms at 117k Front axles at 118k (guy that did the control arms messed up the axles so the boots were leaking and had to replace) Everything else such as oil changes, brakes, tires, etc has been part of the regular maintenance so I don’t count that

Quick update on my installation -- the video was tremendously helpful!!! A couple of points i ran into -- my valve cover was really on there -- i was able to use a pry tool, only touching the plastic cover and a metal piece on the engine, slow work. The hardest part was the brake booster on the back side, finding the bolts took the longest since i didn't know where the where - lot of scrapes on the hand. One of the best parts was knowing the number of bolts and the tool size (and torque specs) -- saved me a lot of time - great job posting them over the video. The bolt on the fuel line eventually traveled way down under the booster -- prob should put some tape around it to avoid fishing it out later. The fuel rail plastic cover can come off, mine fell into the bottom of the engine. Fished it out with a coat hanger - but I'd take it off and set aside. I purchased the Vaico cover from FCP and worked like a charm -- between the video and their warranty, I'm so happy with my choice.

Excellent video. I decided to tackle this project myself after seeing the instructional video. I just followed the video and everything went well. It's running great now and I saved a ton of money. I swapped the order of vacuum pump and plastic bracket using the E6 socket and vice grips at an angle to remove the bracket first give a little more space and visibility for removing or installing the vacuum pump. Thanks for making the video.

Great Tech Video (even for part time mechanics) There is one part and that is the part where you mention the coil wires need to be on top so they reach. I found that they still reach under the fuel line, but, I couldn't line up the lower fuel line to the fuel pump until I made sure the coil wires were on top. As for the vacuum pump tools, I couldn't wait for new tools that you recommended (which I ultimately purchased), so I used a 90 degree t40-allen type wrench (basically looks like an Allen wrench), and that fit to break lose the vacuum pump screws and then I used the same tool to tighten them. I was able to fit a T-40 socket and use my fingers to rotate the extra turns off and when I re-installed. Last point, if you do accidentally move the vacuum pump drive shaft, you will need to feel inside the area where it engages with the cam and then position the drive shaft on the vacuum pump to be inline with the cam. It really wasn't that difficult. I made the mistake of bottoming out the high pressure fuel pump cam first, when I should have installed my vacuum pump first and then determine if I needed to rotate the crank shaft to lower the cam for the fuel pump installation. This is because when I rotated the engine for the fuel pump cam, it turned the vacuum pump cam as well.

Quick question how do you know if the cam shaft needs to be lowered,and when crank shaft is rotated clockwise does it turn the cam shaft? Is there also any procedures that must be done before rotating the crankshaft?

Awesome video, saved me at least 1500 dollars. One advice before starting this job is to check the valve cover itself for cracks. I started the job thinking it was the gasket but turned out it was a crack in the valve cover. Also, if you feel like the black power cord is too much in the way, it can be removed by a 10 mm bolt.

Excellent DIY video. Did my 100k service and had to add this service in after I found the oil leak on the inner gasket between cylinder 3 and 4. The sequence on removal of the injector grounds, pump wiring and pressure lines is not that critical. Just keep track of them and make sure you connect them all back and you're good. I think removal of the windshield cowl would have made things easier but not necessary. I clocked the whole job at around six hours but take your time.

Nice video , a simple question in order to reinstall the high pressure fuel pump is recommended to do this job with the vehicle in neutral to avoid the need to get down to the transmition bolt to release it from parking and spin the crankshaft to the lower position ?

keep them coming. My 2016 x3 has the 0w20 oil sticker but the bmw agent sold me 5w30. The temps take a long time to go up when I used 0w20, is it ok to use the 5w30 in US NC region? Also I have family members that don't unterstand the importance of warm oil..

I bought this same kit to change my valve cover gasket but I noticed it’s still slowly leaking oil. The only tool I didn’t have was a torque wrench for the E10 torque screws. Could my issue be that those screws aren’t on tight enough from using a socket wrench opposed to a torque?

My local BMW dealership wanted to charge me $1400+tax and it didn't include the new cover, so yeah $2k it's exactly what the charge and don't forget the $199 engine diagnostic which wasn't included in the quote that I got.

Hello, I have a 2014 X1 281i and the directions fit well. Thanks. I cranked it up on the 2nd try and it went well. The next day it took 15 cranks to start up and today it will not start at all. Any thoughts? Do I have to reset anything? Codes came up Valvetronic servomotor - short circuit or disconnection and mixture fuel-air control - too lean

I have the n26 engine so PCV valve has the vacuum hose going to it. Is there a way to physically test if the valve is good? (diaphragm not ruptured). I can freely blow and suck air thru the hose so was wondering if that is normal!? Thanks

When you replace the entire valve cover, what are the part numbers for the replacement cable clips? Mine were old and brittle and could not be transferred.

awsome video - would be useful to know while you are it what other things you might consider doing - eg: check on timing chain condition (I don't know what to look). Just did this on 2014 528i (F10 N20) and thankfully you don't have to remove the 'cal cover' 3:18 unlike the F30 shown at the beginning. Also I did remove the entire wire harness to make more room to get the vacum pump 3 bolts (by far the harder part), and re-installed the vacum pump back first (reverse order) unlike the comment at 23:46 the top 6 hex harness bolt is a pain to get to but doesn't need vacum pump out at least for me. Note: the gasket cover was REALLY stuck on and I pulled as hard as I could and couldn't get it off - entire engine wiggles from it's mount. I thought I had screws still on. I even tapped corners that I knew oil was leaking to dry to dislodge it. Wish video mentioned that issue. eventually came off but was really stuck - vacum somewhere ?

I completed this job issues, but now im having a smell of fuel when idling. I checked all the fuel hoses/rails and no leaks, i checked the fuel pump no leaks and flair nuts as well. Any suggestions?

On the injectors u can use a flat head from the top and just remove the connector and it’s much easier

I was told by the dealer I have this same issue with the valve cover gasket leaking.. I wonder if this could be the reason I get the “drive train malfunction” warning every so often. I’ll be changing this soon myself thanks to this video.

The drive train malfunction alert usually has something to do with the timing chain.

Hi Gustavo, the vacuum pump is located on the rear driver's side of the valve cover.

My 2013 n26 misfires when starting up, I’ve changed spark plugs,ignition coils, and both 02 sensors. White smoke was coming out before this happened. Do I need new injectors or a new turbo?

My question now is with burnt spot on top left exhaust manifold, would a swap fix it or could it be something else causing burnt oil spot to continue to burn when turning car on? Nothing is dripping from top since valve cover was replaced and no leaks from the originally cracked valve cover leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Could it be head gasket? I don't know. New exhaust manifold cost 2.3k plus tax and shipping. Is it safe to swap from junk yard used exhaust manifold? What do you recommend?

Thank you for this. This will be my guide once your kit arrives - the one that does not have a "Genuine BMW" gasket! How come a Toyota that costs half the price of a BMW can have a valve cover seal that lasts at least twice as long?

After doing this job the leak was not cured. Turned out that the unused wastegate actuator outlet (plastic nipple) on the vacuum pump was leaking oil and capping that cured the issue. If, like me, your car has an electronic wastegate actuator, seal this outlet permanently since it will never be needed.
