This BMW F800R oil change video will show in just 7 steps how to do an oil change on a BMW F800R, or on any other F800 series BMW motorcycle like the F800GS, F800CS, F800ST, and F800GT.
THIS VIDEO COVERS
- What tools you will need
- What oil type to get (you need 15W-50 not 10W-40 oil)
- What oil filter to get and what to look for on an oil filter
- What the correct torque specifications are (oil filter & oil drain plugs)
- The proper BMW Motorrad procedure for checking your oil level
I made this video after watching the other F800R oil change videos and realizing that they were all missing one thing or another, or had incorrect information, so I wanted to make one, thorough, complete video.
WHAT I USED / WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- 2.9 litres of 15W50 Semi-Synthetic or Full Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (semi: amzn.to/3usM4Xs or full: amzn.to/3Sotc3V)
- Oil filter removal tool amzn.to/42ndMl4
- 24 mm socket bit and/or wrench (Harbor Freight or Canadian Tire have cheap sets)
- 17 mm socket bit may make installing and removing the oil filter easier on some oil filters
- Torque wrench that can do between 11 N-m (oil filter) and 40 N-m (oil drain plug) amzn.to/2IJR3HC
- BMW OEM oil filter or equivalent (amzn.to/31BE8jp)
- Tray or oil drain pan to catch old oil
- Plan for disposing of old oil
- Rags and paper towel (optional, recommended)
- Gloves (optional, recommended)
- Funnel (optional, recommended)
- Table lift (optional, recommended) discount-ramps...

Nice guide, but I believe th dipstick should NOT be screwed in while checking level, only puahed till thread and pulled out to visualize level... Double check that, maybe I'm wrong, Happy riding
@BenMargolin
@BenMargolin 4 жыл бұрын
you are correct, you should NOT screw in to check level. user manual states "Clean measuring area 2 with a dry cloth. Position oil dipstick on oil fill location, but do not screw in. Remove oil dipstick and read off oil level."

Well done, Great bike! Just traded my 2011 F800r with almost 90,000 kms for another BMW. BMW recommends replacing the crush washer every time, however, it can be reused if it has not been flattened out. I always used BMW oil and filter.

Bring the bike over ! lol. the center cover (between your legs), remove the screws and take the cover off. you'l find the battery there, right before the battery (closer to the seat) is the air box cover. you may need to pull the body panels to the side a bit and then pull the air box straight out. air filter will be under there.

I can't guarantee that this is the procedure for the 900. Might want to find the service manual online and make sure.

I'd suggest avoid tightening these kind of oil filters with a wrench - hand-tight is more than enough. With a wrench you risk breaking its spot-welded nut, leaving a puncture. Only use the nut for removal.
@YouMotorcycle
@YouMotorcycle 4 жыл бұрын
Is that really a concern when using a torque wrench?

Hand tight is a lot less precise than setting a torque wrench that's been tested and trued brother

He screwed the dip stick in to check the level. Manual says to place stick up to the thread, not to screw it in fully?

I'm still really confused about oil type you should use. My 2010 bike manual says it should be 10w40 or 15w40 (depending on climate conditions), but the manuals for the newer bikes (like 2016- models) recommend 15w50. I'm not sure if the BMW fiugured out over time that 15w50 works better in this type of engine or if the 15w50 should be used only in the newer bikes because the specs of the engine have been changed. Any ideas or suggestions?

Newer models could have differences in the motor maybe. I would join a BMW f800 forum or group on Facebook. You'll get ten different opinions, each on saying something different. Personally I would listen to the manufacturer and go based on your climate. Where do you live?

Hello. I am writing to You from Russia. I bought this motorcycle and fell in love with it. But in my country, there is a problem with the equipment of salons. We don't have computers for diagnostics. How can I bypass the system so that it doesn't give me a maintenance error? Thank You!

I would join a BMW 800 owners group, there is probably a forum out there or I know there is a good owner's group on Facebook, and ask the people there. Many experts there. They'll be able to help you.

oil filter; hand turn only-tight and back off a little.
@YouMotorcycle
@YouMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Half turn past hand tight is the conventional wisdom. However I have one friend who rides and is 6'5", 226 pounds, and I have another friend who rides who is 4'11, and 95 lbs. Do you think their hand tight are both the same? And that's why I like giving people the torque specification.
