I own its thinner brother, the K1200GT. I always joke that the LT on the K1200LT stood for "Light Truck!" My 2004 GT is still relativly low miles at 16K. Hope the silly-complex servo ABS hangs in there a few more years for me. I love riding it, smooth as glass.

Light Truck, I love it! It's exactly what it is! Hahaha! Your ABS will be fine, just make sure to renew the brake fluid in both primary and secondary circuits, as per BMW's recommendations. I think it's every two years.

With the screen you could try one of those kits you can get for car headlights you basically sand it down and then it looks like you have made it worse but then you apply this liquid stuff and it goes clear like new again. That is if you still have the bike and didn't push it into a ditch after the camera went off

I was tempted to set a match to it, but then I would have had to go home on foot. lol. Came home safely though. Haha. You know what, I had not even though of that headlight kit thing. I will try itç Thank you Darren!

@@gmcevoy it really works but that is just a small problem with this machine but Geoff you are the man when it comes to fixing stuff. if you love the bike you can fix it up for just the price of the parts and some spare time. my thoughts are this i think you like the bike it's bmw so it has some quality if you love the bike so much fix it up for yourself i don't think this kind of bike is for you at least not yet maybe when you get older

@@Mr_Dia-Tribe I also have mixed feelings about it, if truth be told. Maybe I'll be old enough by the time I have finished fixing it! Hahaha. Right now, it is one of the cheapest on the market, but I am confident that I can turn it into one of the best ones out there, and that somebody would buy it if it was in good nick. I would not be doing anybody a favour, selling it as it is. It is going to stick around for a long time, then I will lose interest and it will be in my way more than anything... So I will do my best to stick to a reasonable budget, and figure out if I keep it or not in the long run. Wait and see... At any rate, thank you for your eternal support. It is truly something that I look up to. Thanks for that, Darren, it really means a lot to me.

Interested when you start doing the fixes of time and costs . Clutch is a big one so time taken and total cost of all parts .
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Ай бұрын
Parts is around 600€. Time depends on your skill and the size of your toolbox. Sadly I sold it, but I still have my K1200RS which has the same chassis. Clutch needs doing on that one, so maybe a video will follow.

Sorry your ride ended that way. I second the recommendation to install stainless steel braided hoses. Eagerly awaiting you getting into that clutch job. Keep the faith!

Thanks Paul. Just glad they didn't simply lock up. That would have been me flat on my face... I managed to source a set of braided stainless steel hoses indeed, they are on their way as I write these lines. All will be revealed in the next video. Hopefully I can get it up and running for the weekend, as there is a bike meeting which I would like to go to this coming Sunday. I have started to study the workshop manual, this clutch job is going to end up in a partial restoration, mark my words. There are so many things to be removed that "while I'm at it", might as well replace. 🙂 Thank you for sticking around, Paul, truly appreciated.

When my ABS unit failed, bmw wanted $4000 and there were non available in the entire country, the US. BMW obviously not interested in long term ownership making a bike this complicated.

Well, I am not exactly on the same page as you, Robert. BMW's are brilliantly engineered with servicing, thus longevity in mind (up to a certain date, I'll give you that. Anything after 2010 is definitely not designed to last as long). I will agree that they are expensive to maintain however, and the problem is when they get sold on by the first owner, they can fall into neglect by the next. They will tolerate it to a certain extent, but by the time parts needs replacing because they fail, things can get prohibitively expensive. It is always best to pay the premium for a used BMW with low mileage and fully documented service history. This bike I got here has the original maintenance booklet full of stamps by the first owner, but there is a gap when the second one bought it, and this is where I come in to set things right. No surprise that it was the second cheapest bike on the market at the time I bought it. Lucky for me, the ABS unit is fine. It was a fork oil seal which was leaking, and fork oil got onto the pads which started to stick once they got hot. I just changed the fork seals, rebuilt the calipers and fitted new pads, we'll see how it goes from here on. Also, these bikes are notoriously expensive to maintain at a dealership because everything takes ages to do, so a lot of the cost goes into labour. In this case, the whole front end came off... It is taking a long time to set right. So don't be discouraged, and rest assured that these are great bikes. Do you still have yours? Thank you for watching Robert, take care!

Hope you get it sorted with as little as possible hassles!!! When still having the original rubber lines they may give off rubber particles and that may "clog" the ABS unit so maybe a first step would be just do to a brake fluid flush and see what that reveals and if it solves the immediate problem... There's a guy here on YT that I came across a couple of years back when scrolling around that takes apart a gen3 BMW ABS unit, shouldn't be too much different, and from memory that one showed rubber particle build-up as the reason for malfunctioning (that being the reason for his tearing apart work if memory serves me right) and it didn't seem too complicated to actually disassemble and restore, at least not for a patient guy... :-) Good luck regardless with fixing your problem!!!

Thank you for your insight! I have found out what was wrong, busy sorting the issue as we speak. I will post an update soon! :-) I hope it won't have to go as far as rebuilding the ABS unit though, but we'll see. Speak soon!

Hello from Hood River Oregon. I bought a BMW K1200LT with 58.000 miles for $2500.00 U.S. then I had BMW put new brake lines and tires on it. Had it for about a year now. Wonder how it's going with your bike since it's been 9 months since this one. Gonna check out your channel.after this video gets done. The road your riding on looks very nice. My ABS light came on the other day. Crossing my fingers it just needs fluid added. My windshield looks much worse than yours. I have manual center stand and my springs are tired so it takes a lot to lift it up...a LOT! How stiff is your throttle? Mine is the stiffest of all the 10 bikes I ever had. Hmmm. Do u still have it?

Hello there! I've done a lot of work to it, although not much on camera. I had started filming for a video about upgrading the brake lines to stainless braided hoses, and the operation turned into a nightmare of more and more things to do on the bike. I ended up scrapping the idea of making a video about it because it would have taken much too long. In a nutshell, I had all fairings off, replaced the brake lines, reconditioned both front and rear calipers and front master cylinder, bled the brakes, rebuilt the forks with new seals, and bled the clutch, which turned out to solve the slipping issue. The clutch actuator rod was not fully coming back to its initial location, which was generating slip under high torque load. I also replaced the windscreen for a new one, rebuilt the screen motor, polished all the fairings while they were off the bike, sent the radio to a guy in the USA to have a new, more powerful amp fitted. I ended up selling after all because I got strapped for cash. Thank goodness things have turned around since then, and I have been on the fence about buying it back, but landed a great opportunity on a K1600 GTL instead. I must go and collect it next week. Regarding your ABS light, you might want to check the sensor-to-ring gap, and make sure your battery is in good condition. Low batteries can cause havoc. My throttle was smooth as butter. The throttle cables are lined with nylon, so its best to replace them if they have been previously lubed with oil. Chances are the nylon has worn out, making the cable movement stiff. It's not much of a chore to swap it for a new one as much as removing all the fairings to get to it. lol.

Hi Geoffrey.. Sorry you have so many issues. I’m still thinking about buying a k1200 lt but your videos makes me a bit concerned, do I dare. BMW’s are great bikes but then again 20 years or more old electronic?! Did you get your brake problem sorted? Looking forward to see more with you and your LT! 🤞
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 11 ай бұрын
Hello! Don't be afraid, you just have to find the right one. I bought the second cheapest LT on the market, so it is no surprise that I am having problems. I like the challenge, and it should make good content for my channel. If you find one with low mileage and full service history, you should be fine. I have looked up the price for such a bike, and it is worth paying more for a nice one up front, than fixing a cheap one like mine. The problem I had was a fork oil leak, where fork oil got on the brake pads. They got swollen from the heat and were dragging on the disc. I changed the fork oil seals, refurbished the calipers while I was at it and changed the brake lines, and it is fine once again. I will post that video soon.

Sounds like a total money put. It's probably cheaper in the long run to buy brand new.

Well, if you look at the equivalent nowadays, you're looking at about 35 grand for a new bike. This K1200LT would be a money pit up to about 5 grand tops, including purchase price. You don't have today's luxurious amenities of course, it is 20 years old after all. 🙂

What a bummer, Geoffrey! Did the ABS fail? Man, if I were you, I would pass this one on to the next unfortunate soul. The chance of coming out on top with the costs is nil. And there is already a ton of maintenance content on the LT on KZfaq. Dump it and focus on the RS. Good luck, mate!
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, my thoughts exactly, but I couldn't bring myself up to doing that for a couple of reasons. Unfortunate soul is a good way to name whoever might buy this bike in its current state, and I could not come to terms with creating a burden for somebody who might well be out of their depth, either technically and/or financially. I am a professional mechanic, so it will cost me time and a bunch of parts. I can do it, and I know for sure that when I will be done, I will have a fantastic bike which I will be able to enjoy for many years. If I come to sell it, whoever buys it will be able to enjoy it just as much with peace of mind. Lastly, there is indeed a bunch of LT content out there, but so far it is quite factual from what I have seen. Bearing this in mind, I do wish to create some content with more entertainment value, about what it is like to buy a used bike more than just maintaining one. I have noticed that my tech videos usually get less views than the more entertaining ones, so hopefully I can come up with a mix of both. I might be shooting myself in the foot, only time will tell, but I feel like I have to try. Plus, I will still be wrenching on the RS, the Bonneville and the Pinzgauer no matter what (nobody cared about the couple of episodes I shot about my Mini Cooper S, do I scrapped those productions). :-) It was not the ABS who failed. More about what happened in the next video. Thank you for sticking around!

Geoffreyyyyyy, hey mate, sorry to hear about your job, but just keep in mind that there are a lot of companies out there that need good people, is going to be a very easy job change. I will come first here and say, let's call it "The Blue Whale", your blue whale 😁, c'mon, it makes sense. Please don't be disappointed with the brakes failure, I bet you still have the "black rubber" original pieces of crap on the bike which shed pieces of rubber on the inside of the hose and cause problems, need to move to stainless steel braided hoses.😬 (I know, but you have to). Be very happy that your ABS is still working, you said nothing about the lights on the dash, therefore I assume they are working, they are failing so often is amazing actually that yours is still working. I bought a R1200RT 2007 yesterday and rode it from Glasgow to Bristol where I live, Jesus, this bike is so nice and easy to ride and feels so comfy and light , although it isn't, you need to give it a go if you have the chance, trust me. I don't really like the sound of the boxer engine 😬over my K1200RS, but mate it handles like a dream. Cheers mate, maybe I will make a video with my bikes so you can have an idea what I am on about 😂 !!!

Hi Gaby. Many thanks for your kind words, truly appreciated. We'll see how it goes... The Blue Whale. Makes perfect sense, I like it! Regarding brake lines, the are still the original ones. I made a shopping list in the BMW spare parts catalogue, just for a laugh. I'll give all the details in the upcoming video. So braided stainless steel it is. ;-) Looking forward to seeing your video!
