This is the BMW M4, and as we’re all familiar, it’s the sultry 2-door version of the M3, a car synonymous with BMW itself.
But importantly, this M4 here marks the entry of the second generation of M4, and 6th generation of M3 so it’s kind of a big deal.
Under the hood things don’t change a huge amount - still 6 cylinders in a straight line and still a twin-scroll turbo
However, there’s more to an M car than just a motor…
It’s no surprise that the M4 is a scalpel of precision performance, after all this is the no nonsense Competition package which means you can’t even get a manual if you want...because us silly humans aren’t as smart or as fast as a computer.
However, it’s not like you can’t have fun with this thing...
You can still slide this thing around!
Which brings me to an important point. We said this is the Comp which means automatic, but that also opens the door to a M3/4 first...4WD
So, no manual in the comp, 4wd in the comp...does BMW not want you to have fun??
Of course not! You don’t HAVE to spec AWD and if you option the stick you can’t even get AWD and you get a drift mode with analyzer, but if you want the quickest M3/4 BMW has ever made...well let’s talk about that...
It’s right there in the name...Competition. That suggests it’s supposed to accelerate the quickest. Corner the hardest. And brake the shortest. And that’s what it does
Under the hood you have the M division’s S58 engine spewing out 503 hp and 479 lbft. That’s more than you get in the manual-only base m4
From there you’ll get BMW’s optimally tuned ZF 8-speed gearbox which will send power to the rear limited slip differential..an coming next year to all 4 wheels if you want
All of this means 0-60 in 3.8 seconds…
But again, power isn’t everything, especially for an M car…
You get electronically controlled adaptive dampers
You can get carbon ceramic brakes
The power comes on incredibly low and strong and pulls all the way up the tac
The The transmission is sharp and intelligent in automatic mde and in manual there’s some theater in pulling the paddles yourself...very rewarding
The steering is shockingly communicative...BMW was listening from last gen
The chassis is confident and planted from entry to exit and rewards bravery for getting on throttle early
And the brakes...well they’re good too
What a riot!...but let’s say you have slightly different tastes...
Let’s say you don’t want a scalpel and you want a sledgehammer
Then you might want something like this
This is the Mustang Mach 1 and essentially what that means is it sits right between the GT and the halo GT500.
No more flat plane Voodoo engine, the Mach 1 gets a Coyote motor thats also in the GT
That means 5-0...And it sounds incredible...not flat plane v8 incredible, but pretty damn good
Now, the mustang has always kind of been all about the engine, and while it’s a great engine we’re talking about going up against M cars so what else do we have?
This thing is track ready and focused All Mach 1s come with additional underbody ducting to cool the brakes, along with engine- and transmission-cooling upgrades, and a rear-axle cooler borrowed from the GT500.
We also have a tremec transmission either way you want it. In the auto it’s the 10 speed we’re familiar with.
BUT the terrible getrag manual in the GT is replaced by a tremec 6 speed manual
Power still only goes to the back through a LSD which means 0-60 is done in 4.3 seconds
So it’s not as quick as the BMW, but you canrow your own gears while you’re engulfed in V8 noises and that has to count for something. you also have the ability to do no-lift-shifts, meaning on the full throttle straights you can keep your gas pedal down while upshifting.
But while this is a pony car, the Mustang isn’t just about the motor and straight line speed anymore
The handling package that we have, actually produces 150% more downforce than the GT
Paolo VO: The mach 1 has magnetic adaptive suspension that’s bolted to the same incredible subframe as the outgoing GT350
The chassis is planted and the Brembos ensure you have confidence as you head into corner entry
Around mid-corner you’ll be thankful for the Michelin Cup 2 tires and their excellent grip as you get onto the throttle and power through corner exit
Turn in and you'll notice the improved feel and precision of the Mach 1's steering compared to the Mustang GT's, courtesy of the stiffer intermediate shaft in the steering column and re-tuned electric power steering.

eliminate dramatic music when your talking or when the car is driving please. You can have it when it pans but its so distracting to listen to the engine or what youre saying

in Munich they're calling it "Da Chameleon" hahaha no, this was a track event with other journalists so we couldn't shut the track down to get rollers so we had to borrow press material for a couple shots

M4 is nice if tech and creature comforts are your thing. Mach 1 definitely when you want to go for a real drive. My m4 is my daily for its comforts and tech and my GT350 when i want to have real fun and feel good😊 no other car has given my such joy as my GT350 and that includes the Porsches I've owned.

Strange. Unless you owned a first gen Porsche Cayenne or your definition of fun is a bit awkward, there is no car journalist ever, not even the most American minded (chauvinist) car vloggers, who dared to say a Ford Mustang is a better drivers car than any Porsche 911.

@@anoniem9518 no i have had two 911's with different engines - one wide body and one not. both were cool but neither as enjoyable as an overall road/track package as the 350.

@@adonisd8261 Your perspective is so odd, truly unique! Like you I've owned several Porches and I once had the opportunity to test drive a GT350, I had the complete opposite impression, I thought the GT350 handled like a boat and wasn't remotely in the same universe as my Porsches. People say they like the "drama" of these muscle cars, but to me it's all bark and no bite, I'll take the precision of the Germans.

@@sabresys45just got my Mustang GT yesterday… I had a Carrera S 992 earlier in the year and I completely agree, the Mustang feels like a boat, I’m almost returning it to dealer over a M3 (never had a M car)

You guys are short shifting the hell out of that Mach 1. It eagerly revs all the way to 7,500 rpm in a hurry, especially once your over 5,000. I drove mine yesterday before the hail and snow and god that car rules. It shows you how good it is that a $62,000 mustang is up against a $100,000 M4 comp.

I own both can't compare interiors or fit and finish but its 30,000 difference so is the interior worth 30,000

Curious what your thoughts are on a 0-60 race between the '22' M4 and the '21' Supra? Supra has about 100 less H.P. But about 500 pounds lighter. They both have 0-60 times of 3.8 but in the real world who would ace it? BMW should pull way ahead after 60….or would it?

An interesting thought...I'd still put my money on the M. I love the Supra regardless of what anyone else says, but I don't know that it would keep pace with the s58 much past 0-60

Too much music and too little lap times. A more valid comparison would be the Car and Driver Lightning Lap. These two (2) vehicles (and the M3) are very close in track performance. However, as mentioned below, the the Mustang does not have the ability to change colors, spontaneously.

You really need to rev that Mach 1 out to get the power… Straight line or roll the m4 will be quicker, however on a track that’s not the case.

The new BMWs are ugly as fuck. I really don't understand what they were thinking. The previous gens M3 were some of the most beautiful cars ever made. These are atrocious. I think they thought it was one of those new looks that would eventually grow on everybody, like the new gen Stang. They were wrong. It ugly, just ugly, fucking ugly, fugly.

Due to the nature of the event we weren’t able to get true representative lap times which of course wouldn’t be fair to the manufacturers. However I will say this, the BMW even on less aggressive tires would be faster. The torque from the turbos gets it out of slow speed corners and up to speed faster

@@caribbeanseas You're also comparing a spec'd out M4 with Cup 2's vs a standard Mach I (no track package) w/Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. I don't expect the track package to make up 30 sec, but it would be within 5-10 sec my guess.

The Mach 1 would definitely be a lot more fun to drive on the track and those orange brembo calipers wow! The M4 would be the better daily and that green looks very European as it should. Curious is this channel based out of Wisconsin?

The MT82 is STRONGER than the Tremec TR3160 in the Mach 1. The TR3160 is a better driving transmission but not more durable when you add boost. The MT82 doesn’t have any issues with driveline power loses. Not sure why that misinformation is being put out there.

Stronger to that degree of power? I know people with boosted Mach 1’s rolling with boost with the tr3160 and have no issues. I’m sure once you get above a certain point it will need some love but at the end of the day the tr3160 is FAR superior to an MT82.

@@MachTacular. TR 3160’s blow out 3rd gear when you add real power. Doesn’t mean they all will but they are WEAKER than the MT82 per Lund Racing and Fat House performance.

hmmm you say the m4 is faster. don't doubt it. should have went against the 500 at its price point. But if you're gonna says its faster show lap times. Maybe i didn't hear it. But I personally will take a 6 spd mach 1 over the bmw any day.

Fair points, but in truth coordinating a production like that is really difficult. The only reason we were able to do this video was because we were at a media event with a specified fleet of cars (no 500) and we weren’t able to hot lap the track so couldn’t record indicative lap times. I realize this isnt really an excuse but we try our best to put out the best production we can given our constraints. We hope you liked the video even without the lap times, etc
