I regret buying a new motorcycle from BMW 8 years ago; it has been plagued with quality problems since week one. That is joint sealer, it is used to keep moisture out of the overlapping seams.

One of the main reasons for the automation of the painting process was because of the toxic environment and risk of the explosive atmosphere. Still, a lot of people are needed for the process to be done. From technicians to engineers that will program and monitor everything. With automation, it's much safer and much more cost-effective.

Powder coat paint. It isn't the typical wet solvent paint being sprayed. The finish is less than impressive also, such heavy orange peel.

mazinais31 They're controlled with computer programs. Everything is done with absolute precision. Sprayers measure the exact flow rate of paint being sprayed. Those robots are programmed to move within milimeter precision. Imaging devices can see exactly how much product is sprayed onto the car and they can also see if the coat is uniform and free of imperfections.

Andre KICK yes! this is true but.. Machines are more consistent and employees are expensive and they can only work so many hours at a time before needing breaks or time off. People age, require training and can make mistakes. Machines can work for very long periods of time only requiring light maintenance and electricity. That's why machines are chosen for this job. People only do what machines can't do.

@@fakker8349 The electrostatic powder paint is baked in an oven and becomes glossy at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. No humans painted this car, only robots.
