FWIW, I just corresponded with Castrol regarding this oil, and whether it has any moly in it. As you may know, the BMW owners manual specifically calls out that moly additives are prohibited because they attack coatings of internal engine parts. Castrol's response was that the oil does contain a small amount of moly, but it is less than .01%.

@GrumpyGoat 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that they mean extra additives the user may feel like pouring into the engine along with the engine oil, not trace amounts in the oil itself. See this discussion here: www.bmwsporttouring.com/topic/97349-bmw-recommended-oil-does-not-say-no-molybdenum/

@@GrumpyGoat Thanks for that info. The test results are interesting, but testing with used oil might not be accurate. I found some info on line that moly from the engine itself goes into the oil, so used oil will show it. The thread indicated however that someone testing virgin BMW oil and found moly so if true then that's pretty conclusive we should be ok.

I use moly (liquimoly mos2 additive) with no issues. I spoke to the liquimoly engineer via email and he stated they run 10% in their r1200rs bikes with no issue.

Sorry, but I laughed after you went through all the trouble of getting oil on the pipe and bracket but the next scene shows all the oil around the bottom part of the engine near the drain. Little bit of brake cleaner would work. Out of curiosity, there looks to be another drain plug immediately below the oil filter? Any idea what its used for? I'm doing the first oil change on my wife's R1200RS tomorrow.

Glad you got the laugh. 😄 No idea what the plug below the oil filter is. You might want to consider joining the RSWasserboxer.com forum and asking your question there. Someone may know.

Just a quick note , maybe easier to write on the filter before installing
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 5 жыл бұрын
It would be easier but messier. I use a paint pen and the pain takes some time to dry, so it is better for me to write on the filter after I finish the installation when I don't have to handle it any more.

Grumpy Goat Yes. The filters I have replaced on cars have always been grey, so I use permanent marker. Does not help when the filters are black.

I have a question, my oil is still full from last year since I haven’t really ridden much, but the service notification is displayed on the bike, should I still take it in for service so the notification to turn off? Thank you for your time
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 2 жыл бұрын
No need to change the oil. Oil does not wear out due to time if the engine is not being used. Hours of use is a more useful determinant, and miles is the next best thing. By the way, oil is not really supposed to get “less full” with use. In other words, oil can still be “full” (if there is no leak or burning of oil) and in need of change.

@@GrumpyGoat thank you. Would you happen to know why the service notification is on if the oil doesn't need to be changed?

Is it neccessary to use Motorcycle 4T oil, since the BMW R1200 engine has a seperate transmission and its own oil?
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 5 жыл бұрын
ABSOLUTELY. The R1200 engine does NOT have a separate transmission and its own oil. The transmission and engine share the same oil. You may be getting confused with the [final drive] shaft oil which is separate and different from the engine / transmission oil.
@RZ500G35
@RZ500G35 5 жыл бұрын
My old R1100S had a seperate gear box oil from the engine oil, and also from the rear diff. I think the R1200 engine is also design the same way.

11NM torq for the filter. Or hand tight for some ;-)
@GrumpyGoat
@GrumpyGoat 3 жыл бұрын
If you use the BMW filter it is challenging to apply a measured 11 Nm torque to the filter. That is why I have switched to a filter with a nut on top (such as the KN160 by K&N). Whether one uses the hand tight method or the applied torque method, I guess depends on the strength of the hand/wrist. Can't go wrong with the hand tight method, even if it exceeds 11 Nm.
