‪@RedishMotorsportbmw‬ show you how the BMW V10 (S85) Vanos Pipe is replaced - step by step.
The BMW S85 V10 engine is found in the E60 & E61 M5 and the E63 & E64 M6.
It has a metal braided High Pressure Pipe fitted INTERNALLY in the engine which takes engine oil from the Vanos High Pressure Pump to the Vanos Units via the Vanos Distribution Pipes.
Some BMW V10 engines have had these pipes leak internally which means the near 1000psi oil pressure is reduced (or lost) and therefore the Vanos Units don't receive adequate oil pressure.
When this happens an EML warning illuminates and the M5/M6 goes into Limp Mode with reduced power & revs to protect the engine until you limp it home or to a workshop for repair.
Not all V10's suffer from this - but some do.
Do a quick Google read up on this issue.
The best time to carry out the Vanos High Pressure Pipe replacement is DURING Conrod Bearings as the underside and Sump have already been removed - therefore it's just 2.5 hours extra labour at that point to change this Vanos Pipe.

Nice video and quality work as normal! The old vanos line is usually quite hard to unseat from the block, but the magic of video editing. It’s indeed a solid extra 2.5 hrs of work. Also a great time to replace the water pump.

Thanks hansbrix, you're right - it's quite tough to unseat. Certainly is several hours further work like you say.

Planning on getting my e63 M6 down to you in October. Will be a big one as I will need a full service, new Conrod bearings, vanos pipe, updated vanos pump gearing and updated oil spray nozzles (mine is a 55 plate). Keep the videos coming, they are making isolation bearable!

Hi James, thanks for this. That would be great - we'd be looking forward to that. That's all work which we specialise in. Aiming to keep a good flow of videos coming every 2-3 days during the lockdown to help keep isolation boredom to a minimum. :)

Thanks Jovan, Yeah it's our first attempt at a more detailed repair video and pre-planning the disassembly certainly helps it flow better. Will keep trying to improve as we hone our video editing skills too.

My vanos pipe in front of the engine blew one summer and fixing was hard the shop manual says to remove the water pump pully. I tried even with pry bars and I did remove the bolts. Let's just say that pully is never coming off and the funny thing is you don't need to take it off.

Where do you get those caps that block coolant that seems so nice and what sizes?
@RedishMotorsportbmw
@RedishMotorsportbmw 4 жыл бұрын
Good questions. I think they came either from BMW as a 'blanking tool kit' with lots of different sized caps from 4mm right up to big things like water outlets and throttle bodies etc. Or could have come on a new radiator for example. We have loads of these in a big collection and you're right they're great for keeping dirt out during repair.
