i've had a 4.6is for 9 years. bought it with about 72K miles. now has about 114K miles. it has been a dependable car. i have not changed the timing chain guides yet. i've only changed the tensioner. the biggest jobs i've done so far have been changing the alternator twice, replacing the fuel filter, replacing the upper timing chain cover gaskets and valve cover gaskets (that was a big job for me but was able to do it alone at night outside in a parking lot over the course of a few days) and replacing the ignition coils and spark plugs. i've had no real problems with the car other than the alternator going out a 2nd time. not sure why that happened. however, i do baby the car. i rarely ever hot rod around or drive in sport mode which is hard on the transmission. here is a tip. sport mode is fun. it shifts much faster and at higher rpms. but slap the shift back into standard mode when going downhill or decelerating. the transmission will thank you. oh. i should add that once the tranny did overheat while in stop and go traffic on a mountain and would not shift. after pulling over and letting it cool down for an hour it has not done that again and that was about 3 or 4 years ago. i consider the 4.6is to be a fun canyon carving sunday driver, or for towing a couple of jet skis to the lake. i do not consider it a daily driver. its hard on gas and feels like a large whale in traffic. but get it out on some back road twisties and it comes alive. it is a cool car. but more of a 2nd car

If you do. Replace coolant system immediately, cam chain tensioner, soleniods Also see my recent post. I love the SAV , and I have had many new BMWs, however still revert back to the V8 4.6is

we have a well respected european indie shop in my city. i asked the owner about timing chain guide replacement and he said don't even worry about it. he said he has rarely actually seen timing chain guides fail on an E53 so long at you change the tensioner now and then and change the oil. he said a much more common failure is the valley pan (coolant)

All that tells me about your indie shop is he is afraid of or doesn't know how to do the job! It is so common now with the cars being upwards of 20 yrs old. It is such a well known problem and so prevalent. Just do a search here on YT-hundreds if not thousands of examples of guides failing! So, beware!

Salutation, Mine is the 5.7L Alpina power edition. In Titanium silver metallic. The city council has taken it away for over 3 years now! And I assist to some of these known issues Especially the cooling system, ibe replaced it twice , and the last issue it had was with steering wheel leak. I thank you for sharing my favourite car Man.

I've owned several BMWs and I concur about the plastic-everything design. It's just fragile, meant to stay together while in warranty and fall apart afterwards.

hi im a first owner of a 4,6is and master mechanic and i think if u want to buy a x5 with a v8just buy the 4,4 (prefacelift) it´s easier maintain ... the 4,6is its just for guys that know the m62 in and out he's much more aggressive and not a good daily driver example the 4,4 has a OT 257° camshaft and the 4,6is has a OT 263° cam shaft the 4,6is it´s a performance car just like the s62. but it is your decision whether you want to buy one or not. but remember if you are at a loss, its your problem because m60 / m62 parts are expensive so if u can't repair it yourself then stop it i invested 41.6**€ with a new price 95.860€ ca. 137.483€ or 159,660 us dollar and if i dont repaired it myself i paid 200k 300k idk. Greetings from Germany / Hessen / Großgerau

Can you elaborate on how you invested 41.6K € (~60k CAD) into a first gen X5 with a V8?
