It took something like 50 years to get the Alberta oil industry to its current size. The idea that if you kill it off then another business of equal size in the new "clean" economy will just spring into existence to replace it is rather naive. Creating an embargo for the products of a neighbouring province is not something than fellow citizens in a country do to one another.

@BradMcquaidd
@BradMcquaidd 4 жыл бұрын
Kent Pengelly embrace it? Really? The energy sector is where Canada gets its resource for development (money). It then makes its way to the other parts of the country where they can’t just dig up a hole in the ground and sell it to other countries to bring in money. They have to build something (technology, etc) to sell to bring in money. If the wexit happens, where will the money be used that comes from energy? The CAD won’t be in much demand and the value will drop because it doesn’t have other industries supporting it. You can’t grow a tree with just water, you need soil and other things as well to make it a tree. The best thing to do rn is for the government to use it’s brain and help Alberta. Whatever Trudeau is doing is utmost stupidity even stupid than that is wexit. It’s like a family, sometimes there are arguments, we gotta have them listened to and come to a decision.

With what, all the peanuts and acorns we've saved. Canada is broke, where going into more debt every minute of every day. It's not just Trudeau, it's every prior government too. I'm on my last few years and have voted in many federal elections and the only government that ever reduced the debt that I can remember was the Chretien Liberals. We live on debt, our economy runs on debt, the world runs on debt, just like the stock market world wide, big money corporations and big banks have made sure of that. It's all about Commodities and Futures to them and making money. They have no assets and manufacture nothing, but yet they make all the money. We're just the working stiffs that man the work stations and feed greed. Without us they're nothing. What I've learned in my lifetime is they want us divided, they want us fighting, because if we ever get our shit together, they'd be screwed and we'd get some of that pie they're eating. Labour unions once were a good thing, but like everything else, they got greedy and too strong, stopped fighting for the average Joe and put companies out of business.

Interesting and rare reference to fusion and ITER. Canada does not contribute financially to the ITER project. I harp on this regularly, including to politicians when I get the chance. Schulich is correct, they have no clue what I'm talking about. To match the US per capita contribution Canada would have to contribute just a bit more than what we gave to Loblaws to update their refrigerators. A rather sad joke from my perspective. Drive the price of electricity below that of nature gas (the cheapest fossil fuel) on a per kWh basis and you'll see greatly accelerated transition from fossil fuel. Nuclear energy today (fission) is about $0.06 per kWh, only hydro electric is cheaper. That price is very close to being cheaper than natural gas, and it's only a fraction of generation capacity. But what do governments do? They implement misguided, poorly managed, renewable energy projects that produce uneconomic energy and drive up, rather than down, the price of electricity. The end result is a slower transition from fossil fuels to electric power.

I hear a lot of talk about separation of the western provinces and don't blame them for thinking that way. The flaw in this thinking however, is that Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are completely land locked and the resource industry is still in the same bind - how to move the product to the coast for exporting.BC holds the key and is the hostage taker. One more thing. It is not the "government" that is creating the impasses, but the people that we elect and their supporting bureaucrats that run the show, and guess what -they have absolutely no skin in the game.

Dan from Ontario here. Equalization should be fixed. That said, Alberta needs to wake up to the fact that the days of big oil are QUICKLY coming to a close. The companies are leaving Alta because heavy oil is not economically sound. There’s a glut of cheaper oil out there and will be FOREVER, given the radical advances in non carbon energy alternatives.

The oil and gas industry has to find another way to do what they do. We cannot rely on gasoline for the rest of time. Time's up. It's time to do something different and cleaner. The tech is there. Why are we sitting on our hands. There is a ton of jobs in clean energy. Where there's a will there's a way. Where are the electric cars? Where are the charging stations instead of gas stations? Build the pipeline, by all means. No one wants Lac Megantic 2.0. Do it, but let's get real on this stuff. Tell us what we need to know about fusion power if it's the bee's knee's. The in fighting in the governments is frustrating and the lack of information is a problem. Every person you talk to has a different opinion. We don't want our earth to go up in flames or under water. We are experiencing climate events that are happening because of inaction on many levels. I have done all that I can as an individual and a business owner. What is next? How can we improve on what we are doing?

The Western provinces have been known as a boom or bust area. Can these provinces depend on their resources forever? especially during a prolonged bust period. Who will prop up the economy? The States? "The International Democratic Union was founded in London June 24, 1983. Former Prime-Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper now chairs a worldwide mutual aid network of conservative parties called the International Democratic Union. The IDU was founded in London on June 24, 1983, by global conservative heavyweights. There are now members around the World. ~ Tyee, an independent Canadian media Member parties of the IDU exchange policy ideas, assist each other in framing the political conversation and, of course, help their allies to win elections. There are regular meetings of the full IDU, and regional organizations. Officers are elected at party leaders’ meetings held every three or four years. A major event is held every four years to coincide with the Republican Party convention in the U.S. Members co-operate on foreign policy, and also share campaign techniques. “If an election is worth winning, then there is someone willing to steal it.” - Mike Roman, Republican National Committee, and treasurer of the International Democratic Union. The IDU offers, for example, “election technology seminars” on a regular basis, and it conducts campaign seminars for politicians and party workers. “These involve exchanges of information on campaign technology, fund-raising techniques, opinion polling, advertising and campaign organization,” The Hill Times reported. It is unclear who funds the IDU, but the connection to wealthy Republicans known for their financial support of conservative causes is clear. There is one outstanding example. The treasurer of the IDU is Mike Roman of the U.S. Republican Party. Roman is also a former employee of the Koch Brothers. According to the New York Times, the billionaire siblings broke up their 25-person opposition research unit in April 2016 as an “efficiency measure.” According to Politico, Mike Roman ran that operation. The new prime minister of Britain, Boris Johnson, belongs to a party that is a member of the IDU. Trump recently told Britain to align its politics with Americas.

The world is already population capping, just no one talks about it. Most people in the west especially are killed off by cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses that are prevented through education about nutrition. What do our schools teach us about nutrition? Eat until it kills you. A good war would do wonders to reduce the population too, and nothing sparks a good war like trying to secure oil. A third to half of the population of the Middle East and East Asia (China, Korea, Japan) would disappear very quickly if Saudi Arabia and Iran went to war with one another.

I am a small investor who happens to work in the oil business in the USA and I happen to hold a few of the same stocks that he does. I haven't heard of him until today. Canada needs to invest in pipelines NOW, or it will be too late. Let the oil flow...

@Flat Earth Data You want the Trans national pipeline to be built while the USA can't even get enough support in it's own Congress to get it completed. If Alberta was to leave Canada the province would go into chaos. At least half of Alberta's wealth would have to go to the Aboriginal people's which is why their leaders are coming out now saying any deal on this pipeline has to include them. Canada's tar sands are the least profitable oil pits in the world because of the refining process and these oil companies keep putting the clean up bill on the federal government. The latest estimates to clean up the oil pits was over $200billion while the companies tried to lie and say only $50billion. This oil project is stupid and you're stupid for following along side as it's just a big cash furnace for the government while the oil companies take all the profits and kill the environment at the same damn time. You need to leave Canada but cause clearly you don't respect it

Who gets the cost of looking after the abandoned oil Wells after these companies are done with them? The federal government! These companies suck all the profits and make the Government bail them out. The world needs to get off of oil and it's up to these oil companies to lead the way im coming up with alternative energy and keeping the people working. @thejuice3819

@Flat Earth Data It's the USA that doesn't allow Canada to sell it's oil on the free market. Whether you agree with climate change/global warming or not the fact is the weather is getting increasingly worse every year, the last 18 summers have been the hottest on record since humanity started keeping track of this. Air pollution IS the reason and if you live in any major city you can see it cause every day of every summer there's a smog alert you could see with the naked eye. Oil pollution is a contributing factor. Groups in the USA do fund groups to protest oil but they do it to cause disruption I'm Canadian politics to divide us to get Alberta and Saskatchewan running to them so they could come in looking like the good guy to save the day just to turn around and steal Alberta and Saskatchewan away from the people.
