Fun facts about pigs because I have nothing better to do: The pig is actually one of the cleanest animals, its mud rolling is a way of cleaning skin parasites. However, from an outside perspective, the act can be seen as dirty. There's more to it than that, though: pigs, as opposed to other cattle, are omnivores, not herbivores. They will eat absolutely everything you chuck in front of them and will make a human body, bones and all, disappear in mere minutes. The meat of carnivores and omnivores has several interesting properties, but a big one is that they carry some types of endoparasites that herbivores don't. Among the nastiest of those is Trichinella spiralis, a nematode that appears in rodents, pigs and canines and can be transmitted to humans via consumption of undercooked meat. Once in our body, it goes through several steps to eventually nestle itself in well circulated muscle cells (Heart, tongue, brain, ect). Once it's there, it causes Trichinosis, a disease which is incurable and leads to muscle pains, spasms, fever, and, if it migrates to the heart and brain, even myocarditis or encephalitis, which can quickly lead to death. Usually, the host survives though, and while the worst passes within a few weeks or months, in extreme cases, the symptoms of the disease can linger for up to thirty years. This parasite may well be one of the main reasons that many cultures saw pig meat as dirty, as completely without modern technologies, it can be rather difficult to make sure pig meat (and other carnivore meat) is 100% safe to eat. Most people will be fine, but if your tribe witnessed even just a few of these cases, I imagine word would spread rather quickly. Last not so fun fact: The US used to have a rather large percentage of the world wide number of Trichinosis cases due to lax health guidelines and inspections, but as the comment below informed me, that number has gone down drastically over the years. Meat packing plants are still parasite factories though, and should not only be treated with moral disgust, but also a healthy amount of caution.
