I couldn't have been happier seeing all the Roys lose. Roman was humiliated by getting his picture taken when signing over the company to GOJO, Kendall lost the company which is the only thing he ever really wanted, and Shiv had to give Tom power after treating him like a lap dog for their entire relationship in order to win him back. Perfection.

I think shiv voted for the deal only because she couldn't bear Kendall, which has nothing to do with her trying to win back Tom. Now with Tom as CEO, and Shiv has nothing but mony, the dynamic in their relationship will change dramatically and I don't think they can last

@@brianfitzsimmons6074 I actually think that now their relationship has an actual chance. It's too long to explain right now but a KZfaq channel called Just an Observation did a perfect breakdown on Shiv. Basically, Shiv's whole life she trusted no one and had to fight for power/attention being the youngest and a girl, her father set that precedent. Especially with how Logan would lie to her and string her along, she basically thought every man was the same and always felt she could never fully trust someone and kept her options open. Notice how she left every relationship she had ever been in before they had a chance to break her heart. She basically never trusted Tom to not eventually be like Logan, even though Tom showed that he was actually a simple man. Whenever Tom tried to tell her that he wasn't a "disgusting brother" like Greg, she never believed him cause she couldn't fathom it. Greg was the only one fucking around, Tom showed throughout the show that even with the power/freedom of being single, he doesn't know what to do with it. He even told Mattson, dude I'm simple and will just do whatever is needed of me. He honestly just wants a wife who will be loyal and loving, and NOW Shiv sort of has no choice but to be that. And I think she'll be happier because now this will be the first time that she has no other options and has to put her eggs in one basket (Tom) and I think over time she'll finally see that Tom has always been different.

It’s not even about the company being as big as his dad’s. It’s about what Waystar represented in terms of his father’s legacy. It’s that moment where Kendall felt like he was finally getting a chance to take the reins and make his father proud (dead or alive) but that legacy was stripped away from him last second. It was the final piece of his father left, and it will never belong to him. Arguably you could say Kendall never got to properly mourn his father’s passing until he lost on Waystar. The grief and dread washed over him in that very final scene. Even in death, Logan will forever remain an elusive figure throughout the lives of his children, especially Kendall.

i noticed shivs decision only comes after Roman’s delayed response followed by kens “that’s fuckin right.” like it was just that one flash of ego needed to convince her this wasn’t the right thing to do. i know a lot of viewers criticized this for being unrealistic but i honestly see how it makes perfect sense for her character to do this.

I thought that Shiv had made up her mind to vote YES when she entered the room. Roman's hesitation, imo, just allowed her to leave the room so that she could collect her thoughts on how she going to present her YES vote. Kendall made for a spectacle when he followed her and gave her no thinking space/time. Shiv got her back up when Kendall mentioned Tom. I also thought any opinions of Tom were strictly hers to have (he was her property), which she had Logan protect him from jail and Gerri make sure that he didn't go. Also, her marriage to him made sure that he moved through the company ranks. My last point, Tom was not stupid. He knew his wife better than she knew herself. Logan kept Tom on because he was loyal and he knew what he was doing within the company and Logan believed that truly loved "Pinky" (Shiv).

@@jr3624 That, too! These characters seemed to have had very little time for the right thing to do. I know what the writer Jesse Armstrong said, but his actors, imo, seemed to have some leeway, which he and the directors gave them to branch out. At another website, a writer alluded that Shiv arrived at board meeting texting with someone, that it could have been Tom and this would make sense after she gave it some thought. Tom probably told her that she would get nothing from Kendall and Roman. I think that Tom also may have had a conversation with Karolina, too, which would explain she and Shiv's odd conversation before Shiv went into her meeting with Kendal, Roman and Hugo. When Stewy arrived and Kendall offered him a fake position before even working out things with she and Roman, it might have sealed it for her. She was to get nothing. Everyone says that Shiv did not vote her own best interest, but financially and probably, emotionally she did. She got a windfall from Matsson and so did her brothers; she might have earned her husband, as he immediately asked for Karolina when he arrived (she was with Shiv); and an attempt for a family, something that she wanted and probably thought that she would never get. Shiv gave Tom things that they agreed upon in season 1: a CEO title; a baby; somewhat easing his mind about money (no longer Roy money); continued access to nice things; for Shiv, in addition to Matsson's money, a baby; possibly a stable home (as I think that Tom still loves her). He wasted no time in getting her out of the bldg and away from Matsson.

No nothing he could say would change Shiv's mind. Her ego could not stomach the fact that her brother would win the crown over her. She also had already found a better option for her, which was to let Gojo acquire Waystar and let Tom be installed as CEO. Perhaps in her mind, she'd have a better chance at acquiring power being the wife of the CEO than she would get with Ken as CEO. That she could continue playing the game that she thinks she's so smart at. And it's probably the right move for her. Ken doesn't really care about Roman and Shiv's role in the company as long as he wins. He's probably going to cut them out of the company if they stood in his way.

Also, he poured the water to himself and to Ewan, whom he thinks is better than his Dad eventhough he's just the investor of the company and also as bad as the rest of the Roys as he's a hypocrite. He's just there to honor his late brother eventhough they had a rough relatinoship. Not even to Frank who is the senior employee, or Stewie, his on and off best friend or even his younger siblings. Also, Logan made a mistake to promise them the CEO position of each of them. Therefore, all of his kids are acting so pretentious just because they think, "Because Daddy told me to!" And they have worst attitudes, rude, disrepectful and act too cocky. Not only just Logan's parenting, their mother, Caroline is also a bad mom. She's ignoring her children's existency because she doesn't know how to be a good mother and also having a husband who is a workaholic. Even when Logan took their custody, he still didn't know how to be a good father. Connor in the other hand knows that he is not good enough to be the CEO. He's trying to make the name of himself and not being in the company since Day One. You are also noticed that Connor always treat Willa with respect eventhough Willa only loves him for his money and wealth while the other three treat their partner like crap? Because the other three learned it from their parents while Connor whose mother has been thrown in asylum and being ignored the whole time realized that he has to fix himself to be better person while the other 3 are so delusionals, corrupted and also loves themselves more than everyone. Also, whenever you see Logan and Connor are interacting, it likes a genuine father and son bonding and Logan mostly smiles listening to Connor's story because he feels warm and relax. But, as soon as Kendall had an audicity to sit at Logan's chair, put his foot on his desk and annointed Stewie as his Chairman, she was on her dilemma. She also noticed Roman was bleeding and she knew it must be Kendall's work. Let's not forget that Roman and Shiv are annointing Kendall as the next CEO with not much 100% confidence and support, they just like "Uh, fuck it. Let's just pick him as the CEO because he's our big brother and also he wants it so bad since he was a kid." Just like how Willa accepted Connor's request to marry her by saying "Fuck it!" (It could be the foreshadowing for the moment) Also, Kendall once again ignored Shiv on his pitch, he just said "Me and Rome" but not her. So, Shiv decided to change her mind and sided with Tom and Mattson in the end which for the first time ever we see him finally take the risk instead of playing safe every time.

Also, the old guards (Frank, Karl and Gerri) have agreed with Gojo deal since Season 3 finale as they were in meeting together with Logan at that time. Mattson also immediately called Frank after learning from Tom. Everyone on the company agreed with Gojo deal, it's just the siblings who are in denial and too childish towards Logan and Mattson. They want the CEO title like they want their favorite toy or things that they like but none of them have responsibility to have it. I bet if one of them gets it, they will get bored immediately and not taking the job seriously like their dad used to.

I think most if not all of people's theories about why Shiv voted the way she did have merit, but somehow no one is addressing the one that is explicitly stated: that she simply doesn't believe Kendall can be a good CEO. It isn't that Kendall is completely incompetent, and honestly I don't even think it's about him being a "killer" (figuratively speaking) or not. The reality is that all of his business interactions feel as though he's playing pretend. He behaves the way he believes Logan would, bull-dozing every instance as if believing you'll succeed is really all it takes to do so. And when that doesn't work, he demeans, he pleads, he guilt trips. And all of it is DESPERATE. There's no calculation, no precision. It is all frantic and typically only moves him further away from what he wants. He attempts to emulate Logan, not realizing that Logan likely already had a fair amount of business savvy and power by the time that Kendall was born. When you have that much know-how, you bulldoze when you know you're able to. But there were other times when Logan chose to be more congenial, more down-to-earth, more patient. He calculates, knowing that not every strategy will work in every scenario. And like, there of course were times when he's lost his shit or made a misstep, business-wise, but he for sure is never begging or bending over for a deal. Kendall can act the part of a killer, someone who's ruthless and machiavellian, but at the end of the day, he still pleads. Just in this scene alone, this all is very clear. Instead of making any actual case for why they should vote no to the GOJO deal, he steamrolls the process, already assuming he's won. And then, after this, when trying to convince Shiv to vote for him, there's no real rebuttal to her statement of "I don't think you'd be good at it." In that moment, he could've argued that point. Wouldn't that be the logical thing to do? While there most definitely was at least one other reason in Shiv's mind of why she'd vote Yes, this is the only reason Kendall is made aware of, and it's possible that if he could give her reason to believe he'd be a good CEO, then she would vote No like he wants. But instead of doing that, he just loses his shit completely. Thereby proving more and more that he would not be a good CEO, because he crumbles under pressure and all of his strategy for dealing with conflict is to essentially flail and throw a tantrum. Putting every other reason Shiv likely had in changing her mind aside, this one is pretty valid, is it not?

I agree. Nicely stated. EDIT UPDATE: When this tape first begins, 0:00 look at Shiv's eyes when she walks into the room and watches Kendall. She was next to the last one to enter the room. Also, look at how Roman is sitting. I believe then that Shiv knew was going to vote YES, but was not sure how she going to present it. When Roman hesitated the way that he did, if things about Kendall were running through Shiv's mind, Roman's hesitation allowed her recalibrate any potential just vote Kendall the reigns of power position. It was matter of how she was going to present that YES vote.

Also when Shiv mentions the waiter, the fact that Ken dismissed it and said it's nothing to consider when in reality it was a true moment of vulnerability that he was willing to pretend didnt happen just to benefit his current situation was like a nail in the coffin imo. By that point Shiv knew Ken would do or say anything just to get what HE thought he deserved as his inheritance and as a leader it means that he would never be true to his word and would only think about himself and not the company

My interpretation of shiv's fate its that she found a sustitute abusive father figure on Tom. Tom had a development in the series that make him resent shiv and be more cold with her, and when Tom betrays her to be Matsson CEO, she instead of taking revenge, tries to appease him like she would have made with her father.

I agree 100%. I've seen a lot of people saying that Shiv flipped at the last minute just to spite Ken, but I think her conversation on the phone with Tom was the key to her hesitancy. Shiv is terrified of being left alone, her father is gone, her mother is emotionally unavailable, Mattson has betrayed her, her brothers have already tried to cut her out of the business once this season (and Kendall's behavior certainly pointed towards icing her out again), and if she voted the deal down, she loses Tom forever too. Shiv is terrified of the prospect of having to open herself up to another person (again) and having it go wrong - so she picks the 'devil she knows' in Tom.
@annkey4091

Frankly, I think Shiv, more or less, unwittingly promoted Tom for the CEO position. She did not understand that Waystar RoyCo was going to acquired by GoJo. When Matsson asked Shiv about Tom, for the most part, her critique of him was fine, but when she got derogatory about Tom, I think that Matsson knew he had his man. As he said, he did not want Shiv's input. He needed someone to implement his changes for the company without pushback or what they thought. She told Matsson at the funeral that Tom was basically minding the store.

my read is that Shiv is upset after seeing that Kendall opened Roman's stitches, that was the final straw for her. It's the only thing that explains her sudden change in body language and behavior between scenes. Kendall was becoming too much like Logan for comfort. His aggressive behavior had been building the past two episodes, he had rubbed salt in Roman's wound and driven him to self harm without ever apologizing or demonstrating concern, it culminated in the previous scene, and now finally the show (and Shiv) punishes him for it. Of course Shiv had other baggage and resentments going on, but it's baffling to me that people seem to think that pettiness and jealousy was her sole motivation here. This is a show that loves punishing people for their mistakes, and this is Kendall getting punished one last time.

The fact he said "that's fucking right" after Roman said no is probably what really turned off Shiv. If he wasn't so arrogant, and wasn't so sure of himself, then she may have taken his side. Putting his feet up on the desk, not even bothering creating a presentation, showed that he didn't take the CEO role seriously. He expected it since birth and never really had the stomach for the job or the work involved. Shiv saw through the blinding confidence of his persona and saw that he was never a good candidate. Had he shown humility, had he shown respect for the title, had he even prepared a little bit more for his pitch, perhaps Shiv would have seen him as someone who could do the job. Kendall squandered that the moment he started acting cocky. Shiv couldn't stomach the look Kendall had when he won, so she decided to stop the deal. Seeing Kendall, the screw up with addiction issues, win the seat and not even take it seriously, was enough to fully make her decide to vote against Kendall

With him becoming ceo , she thought voting it through meant there was a chance he would take her back as she knew she was completely lonely and had no one. You could’ve skipped from episode 1 of the series to the end and it wouldn’t have made much difference, there was ultimately no point to Kendall Roy as a character. The series is just him being beaten and humiliated and backstabbed the same ways always. Most of the episode is just him being humiliated, even to the point where the writers revert him back to season 1 Ken so he can lose. Personally I feel like it was a waste of time. All that growth was for naught, he never had an actual plan or any moves or ever had some killer ruthless move planned for his siblings, no tragic Pyrrhic victory, the parallels between him and Logan were just a tease.

HOPEFUL INTERPRETATION OF THE ENDING: Whatever is thrown at Kendall. Even if he cannot take it, he does take it and that just kills every weak part of him. The more he is burned, the hardened he becomes. So whatever happens. He took the sharpest stab to the back, he got cut deep and he's dead internally. Kenny is no longer human anymore. The minute hint of mercy that he had for his siblings are also gone. So he's fully free in a sense. He lost all the parts of him that makes him a good person but now what he has left in him has made him a beast. He is emotionally nuked, fatally cut and shaken when the show ends. But I think that Kenny is gonna be back. He always bounces back. That is his only consistent character trait. In a way he always keeps coming back to land a few more punches even if it is apparent that he'll lose the fight. And this time, Kendall is a killer. He's even more hardened. He is ready to haul on his gear, get on the field and go to war again. Maybe he will enjoy it. Because its become a game for him. He can't die. He can only lose. And he has lost a lot. The odds are in his favour now. Furthermore, KENDALL IS FREE. From Waystar, from the kingdom of his father. With new money from the sale and his killer instincts, coupled with his new age knowledge of the new world and amazing crisis management skills, I think Kendall being banished from his father's kingdom will force him to start his own empire. By the time he is of Logan's age, Kendall might have his own new Waystar. It will be tragic, but Kendall will get what he wants. Where the show ended is not tragic, here Kendall is actually free from the fight and a new sun is shining on him, a glimmer of hope for a new life. The ending shows us mercy by not showing us what Kendall will eventually do; start his own empire, end up like logan, stack up billions but lose all blood-bonds. At the end, Kendall will die alone. Now that is tragic

That Kendall even needed Shiv’s vote was pretty dumb in hindsight. He had that meeting with Frank behind closed doors about the GoJo numbers being inflated. I find it interesting that so many people see this as Tom’s win and Shiv’s loss. As if Mattson didn’t choose Tom because he’ll be Mattson’s hand puppet this entire time? And Shiv, while portrayed to be suffering the same fate as her mother seems to me to be more Lady Macbeth. Is Tim going to lord it over her in his own way? Of course. But she’ll be in control still. I saw this ending as a brilliant set up for the equally matched power struggle that will go on between Mattson and Shiv once the cameras stop rolling, with Tom being played like a tug-of-war rope. I know we won’t, but I’d love to see a sequel series maybe five years down the road. Who knows? Maybe Mattson and Shiv end up a couple behind Tom’s back the entire time.

I don't understand some of this line of thinking. Yes, she separated herself from her brothers. Her agreement to make Kendall CEO was shallow and grudgingly given. Shiv's voting YES to the acquisition allowed her to keep her pledge to husband, Tom, that they agreed to in Season 1. Tom would be allowed to wear the "big pants", only the pants, in this instance, were not Logan's and wearing them would not have the same pockets. Tom also wanted a baby ----- well. With the money from Matsson, Shiv can do whatever she wants as per agreement with Tom. Shiv owes Kendall and Roman nothing. Their checks will be the same as hers. Perhaps, Shiv wants a nuclear family, the possibility of it with Tom is greater than that with Kendall and Roman. Tom cautioned Shiv of always keeping her options open. At the end of the day, she went with him --- an option.

Options to me in this case were with whom Shiv was going to side, whether she was going to leave the bldg by herself if she voted NO: voting NO with her brothers to maintain the company under family control with Kendall as the head. Kendall was already making moves to cut out she and Roman; voting YES to sell to Matsson, which would include ATN that husband Tom runs. ATN is the Waystar|RoyCo cash cow. By voting YES, Shiv has the possibility of maintaining her marriage ---- Tom wants his baby. She will have a nuclear family, something she never had. I think that Tom still loves her and she loves him, but I think that she is afraid of him, motherhood and going it alone. If you noticed, Tom wasted no time in offering a ride home after her vote. He said that he knows her (better than she knows herself and him). Shiv took the option of going home with her husband and father of her unborn child.@@samanthacristinaburgosmera4160

As far as I am concerned, options is making a stand on issues. In this case, Shiv had the option of sticking with her brothers and voting NO to the GoJo deal or selling the company and getting a big financial windfalll. A monkey wrench was thrown in (at the last minute) when Tom told her that Matsson had chosen him as US CEO. This is reminiscent of Logan throwing the monkey wrench in Tom and Shiv's plan, from Season 1, that Tom would "wear the big trousers." Logan told Shiv, she would be the CEO and not only threw off Shiv and Tom, but Kendall and Roman, too. Shiv became option 3 for Logan. Problem was Shiv believed that she could be a CEO, therefore undermining her agreement with Tom. Shiv's final options were either vote for Kendall and keep the company in the family or vote to sell the company ---- take Matsson's money. After telling her earlier that he did know whether he wanted to keep their marriage, in spite of her pregnancy, Tom gave her another option at the corporate signing, go home with him, the US CEO and his baby that she is carrying ---- an option that she was not sure still existed.@@samanthacristinaburgosmera4160
