--------------------------------------------
A Feast for Odin is a saga in the form of a board game. You are reliving the cultural achievements, mercantile expeditions, and pillages of those tribes we know as Viking today - a term that was used quite differently towards the end of the first millennium.
When the northerners went out for a raid, they used to say they headed out for a viking. Their Scandinavian ancestors, however, were much more than just pirates. They were explorers and founders of states. Leif Eriksson is said to be the first European in America, long before Columbus.
In what is known today as Normandy, the intruders were not called Vikings but Normans. One of them is the famous William the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066. He managed to do what the king of Norway failed to do only a few years prior: conquer the Throne of England. The reason why the people of these times became such strong seafarers is due to their unfortunate agricultural situation. Crop shortfalls caused great distress.
In this game, you will raid and explore new territories. You will also experience their day-to-day activities: collecting goods to achieve a financially secure position in society. In the end, the player whose possessions bear the greatest value will be declared the winner.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Just managed to find and buy a new copy of A Feast for Odin and played it for the first time last weekend. This game is amazing!!! The variety of actions and options, the aesthetics, the presentation and mechanisms - simply awesome. I cannot wait to play it again and again and explore its depths further.

Two years ago, I decided that if I ever wanted to play a worker placement game, that Feast of Odin might be the best. Thanks for assuring me that I've made a good choice! -toby

A desert island game. If I could only play three games the rest of my life, this would be one of the three for many of the reasons mentioned. Still one of the best solo experiences out there.

@@Exozik LOL, depends on the week! A Feast for Odin is the one constant, though. I tend to think of games that have a puzzle to figure out that change from game to game and are satisfying both solo and with others. Right now the others are Spirit Island and Ark Nova. Ark is the weakest of the three as a solo play (still very enjoyable) and I can see Robinson Crusoe replacing it. Hell, by theme only, Robinson Crusoe kinda has to be on that list! Too Many Bones and Paladins of the West Kingdom are the others that float in and out depending on mood.
@Exozik

@@brettchristensen6734 I really enjoy Ark Nova but it is not a easy game for me to table since it is long at 3-4 players. Maybe I should dig in the solo mode.

@@brettchristensen6734 Robinson Crusoe would be a great one to take for theme but also because it's so hard and there's so many scenarios that I feel like it wouldn't get boring very quickly.

Love this game! Have played at 4 once and was too long, won’t do that again unless ALL other players have played before. Have played dozens of times solo and 2 player (even tho my wife beats me more often than not). Want to explore more islands? Or are you going to gather boats and go the whaling/pillaging route? Want to specialize in horses/sheep/cattle? Crafting? Go for it. Use your occupation cards to your advantage and see how your Vikings/Norwegians compare to the others! (Or against yourself)

What bothers me about "Feast for Odin", besides the dice rolling, is that the Norwegian expansion is essential to basically fix the game. (The luck of the draw of weapon cards can at least be mitigated by house ruling.) And I can't help but wonder why having a million worker placement spaces makes a good game when the core idea of worker placement is having tight decisions because the workers block the few available spaces. What I like is mainly the viking theme and maybe the unusual combination of mechanics with the polyomino puzzling on those boards against a million -1 points. So far, that made "Feast for Odin" a game that I would gladly play but that I don't need to own.

In this worker placement game, it's about making the 'right decisions'.

An excellent review, Alex! I have played this game multiple times and found it to be a good solid game. What the game does lack, to me, is the Viking theme attached to it. I don't feel like a Viking when I'm playing the game; I feel like a farmer (as is with many, if not all, of Rosenberg's games) pretending to be a Viking. It's a Viking game in name only. At least, that's how I feel. Still, the systems and mechanics are great, and I will always enjoy playing it, but if I wanted to really feel like a true Viking, I'd play Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition (as the Viking civilisation) or Blood Rage (completely different games with entirely different systems, but the Viking theme shines through way more in those titles).

Feats of Odin is amazing and I feel Ark Nova's zoo tiles - puzzle is based on it but doesn't do it nearly as good as Feast for Odin, For me, Norvegans expansion is a must it balances the board and does improve the gameplay rather than just adding more of the same...

@@BoardGameCo While it definitely sucked and I came in last place, I was laughed at lovingly by my fellow Viking players and we all had a great time. This is my "best bang for your buck" game. $30 new at a MM sale. In fact, the Norwegians expansion was $2 more but well worth the price as I do consider it essential, not so much for more stuff, but for balance. Also 5/5 for me but my gaming group isn't so enamored with it. Actually, one guy hates two games in my 150+ game collection; this being one of them and the other, Terraforming Mars. Blasphemy! But then again, he loves AotWK so that makes sense 🤭

Do you ever set up a game, and it takes so long to set up and there are so many pieces, and as you setting up you really wonder if you want to go to all this work just to play a game? I haven't played Feast for Odin, but it looks like I would feel that.

I feel like this game would be too sandboxy for me. I love agricola and recently sold Caverna because it was too open and the static tile market got stale. I would love to try this to see if my impressions from various reviews are correct or not in terms of if it is a game for me

I have played this a few times. I call this game "artificial complexity" there seems to be hundreds of things going on, but there is only 2 ways of playing this. Go for the dice rolls before your opponents do. The return on the dice worker placements is exponentially higher than anything else.
