Fantastic to know this due to the fact I’m in the process of restoring my boat and I have been looking to roll on instead of spraying, I just have a little bit more preparation and then will be ready for paint, using my ole gel coat as a base or primer since it’s so old and underneath the epoxy I have already taking off.

great video. back rolling is also called "laying off" the coat. one thing that we did when we finished painted/epoxy on floors and related, was to use a clean roller with reducer only to lay off the surface. might work better but it is an extra step

How I wish this would have come sooner! I waited for you to come home with the scoop on Alexseal and ended up running out of time and bought a different brand that is a spray only application. Well,,,,,,, i ran into a problem with millions of little nats landing in the paint so I am actually in the process of building another bigger barn to spray the boat in. I could have taken the boat to a buddys and rolled this gold in his barn and been on the lake!😁 Thanks a million for what you do, great stuff!

back in the late 80s a friend met a paint retailer at the Daytona fl flea market and was impressed by his product. this paint looks the same, water thin, roll and tip. we painted his 45' 30ton ketch in a quiet cove in the Bahamas while in the water from a 13' inflatable. three people in all, one rolled, one tipped and one to control the dingy. the finish was very impressive, ease of useand after 10 years compounded back to a wonderful shine.

I can't thank you enough for your videos. As a 1st time boat owner beginning to work on a recently purchased 1977 Montauk 17, you've been a tremendous resource. The boat has suffered from shabby DIY jobs (ex: using plastic anchor plugs to rectify stripped screws in the hull). While I'm pretty handy, you've made me comfortable with a number of decisions including: paint or gel and fixing holes, among others. I wish you did electrical because it's a bird nest?! I'm not looking for perfection, but after following you I know it will look a lot better when I'm (we're?) done!

Awesome idea using the tape on the roller. I've always 'assumed'... I'm in the middle of a 23' Mako restoration and currently painting! Almost there. I have two coats of Petit Ezpoxy "Bikini Blue" on the hull and I must say, I am really pleased with the results. I've been tipping side-to-side (as some other vids demonstrated), BUT I wish I saw this video!!! Yup, sagging, brushing impressions even with a 10-15% thin.. The vertical direction makes so much more sense. I will apply the last coat using this vertical stroke method and see if I can tell differences. ALWAYS appreciate your time with these How-To's, I know it takes time. Enjoy your family and weeks to come!

We have used Alexseal on our 60' charter catamarans we build for the last ten years. We roll (no tipping) the hulls and spray small parts (masts, booms, etc). Easy to repaint and buff to look new after years. One cat is seven years old with same paint and a buff this year...looks new. We use Home Depot "Best" white 6" rollers. Use a good respirator.

How in the world can anyone downvote you? Your time, energy, cost of supplies, and knowledge is being supplied to us for free. For me, this vid is very helpful. I am about to start painting my 1998 Nitro bass boat and was trying to figure out if I should roll, roll & Tip, or just spray with an hvlp gun. I am using the Rustoleum Topside paint from Lowes, so it actually seems like I should roll and just leave it be, otherwise use the hvlp but major prep for overspray since there are so many curves and lids on the boat. Either way, thanks for taking the time to do this for us, learned a lot!

So very cool results. I have always tipped out with a foam brush. Just to keep possible brush hairs out. That paint is very impressive. Tips out well and rolls out well. An extra 5% reducer couldn't hurt especially in the heat. My one comment for future advice to your viewers is to start painting early in the morning and in the coolest weather possible for the paint type and or factory recommendations. Direct sun light will evaporate the reducer more, cure the paint faster and possibly cause chatter and orange peel. Spent a few years in your line of work and laid up several hundred gallons of Varnish on classic runabouts like the Christ Crafts and Gar woods. I found my best flowing results were in the morning in 50 to 60 degree weather. Varnish in the summer was difficult especially outdoors. Always used alot more marine grade penetrol to help it flow out but at a great risk of sags and curtains in the bright work. Cool chanel by the way.

Trick for rolling without leaving roller lines... So you don't have to back roll, roll off the tip of the roller at about a 15 angle on the panel half way into your next roller width, every time you load the roller with paint. Then roll towards the handle and go completely top to bottom in a single line. Jump over half a roller width and repeat. It makes the tip "feather" out the paint as you keep moving and it' doesn't throw off the paint on the edge of the tip. Also pay attention to the speed you are rolling at, if you roll too fast, it will throw paint off the end of the tip and defeat rolling off the tip. Plus every now and then or even each time, wipe the tip of the roller off on the surface, before you roll off the tip. Then you can roll a little faster... When you get to a corner, turn the roller around so you can get close to the corner without hitting the handle, but first, roll off both ends. Once you master this you can paint anything with out roller lines... and paint really fast. Each paint will have a certain speed you can roll it out without throwing lines and it every where else. And you really shouldn't reroll the paint once you get it on, then you will find yourself fighting to get it smooth again. But with this technique, you won't need to.

I enjoy learning from you. I wish you would show how to fix big holes. We bought a boat that went through Harvey. We lived 850ml. away when we got there it had really big holes in it. The local boat workers wanted 8000 we just can't afford that. They are fixing a lot of these. Our old girl is a 32ft. J sailboat with a double Hull. Most holes only went through outer Hull but was told that I would need to cut the inner out and repair from the inside out. Then repair the inner hull. This is something I would like to learn anyway and I know quite a few of these boat's are being fixed. Thank you

The weather didn't cooperate here in NY this past week so I had to put off applying my topcoats of Alexseal (Etheral Blue). So glad that I could learn from your instruction in this video. While I had bought the Corona Heritage for tipping, based on what I saw, I'm going to just roll it on. I am using 6" superfine Epifanes foam finishing rollers. I also bought the Redtree mohair rollers you suggested last week and will try them as well. Hope I can duplicate your results. Thanks for another great video.

I'm really loving the Redtree rollers for this. Lays down such a uniform film it's hard to go wrong. Just be mindful on the amount thinner in the mix. When rolling it out, if there's bubbles don't worry about it too much, they'll pop and level out. I would practice on some small areas to get a feel for the process before taking it to a large section of the boat :-)
