No race track horse would eat its bedding straw period. They eat the feed hay provided in their feed bale. It’s a completely different type of hay versus the straw used as their bedding. Baffert is a serial liar, a serial doping trainer, and a pharmacological doping cheat. His results are in large part drug aided, and have been for 3 decades.

They were not, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times. Instead of the failed drug test causing a speedy disqualification, the California Horse Racing Board took more than a month to confirm the results. Then, instead of filing a public complaint as it usually does, the board made a series of decisions behind closed doors as it moved to drop the case and lighten the penalty for any horse found to have the banned substance that Justify tested positive for in its system.

@@drewarockwell306 i have 30 years of successful handicapping. This horse backed up in the stretch his last 4 races going shorter. Then gets a needle and runs 10 points higher than every and doesn't back up. The horse had plenty of races to show improvement in speed figures and didn't. That same steady 94 or 95. I have my PHD in this sport, that horse was a 4th place finisher at BEST in that race. Baffert knew he was in trouble win he won. I saw it in his face when he and his wife were walking thru the tunnel to the winners circle. The BOY cheated thinking he may make up a few lengths on Rock Your World and that might let him hit the board. When Rock Your World didn't get out of the gate, he was caught. Bafferts a low life and your gullible to believe his nonsense.

‘It has no effect on the horse’ regardless, rules are rules. The amount found is a violation of those rules. Ointment or not, if the split sample comes back positive, the horse should be taken down.

5 this past year. With Medina Spirit’s positive it makes 30 total. In 2013 he had a string of 2 yr olds who broke down and were euthanised. He is a scrutinised trainer for good reason

It's so sad that some of these trainers, owners, jockeys, etc have to drug these athletes to win. I am so tired of the people that are sticking with Bob baffert, and still giving him horses, and letting him race. He doesn't deserve to race. If u have to cheat to win then u don't deserve to win at all. Bob Baffert is just screwing over people and horses for cheating. Cheating doesn't help the horse to get better at racing. Bob Baffert has probably drugged so many other horses that people don't know about. There are so many drugs in the world that people use to help enhance something. Who knows what y can dope a horse with and what people use. When someone cares just about money and power they make others suffer in the process. These cheaters don't deserve to race anywhere in the world. There are so many things wrong with horse racing that needs to be fixed to make it better for the people and horses. These gorgeous athletes don't deserve to suffer because some people can't play by the rules. Baffert is sneaky when he drugs his horses he makes it look like accidents and mistakes. He always has some lame excuse of y the horse has a drug in its system. Also, there has been a time he didn't deny drugging a horse, so y is he still getting these chances. He knows what he is doing and now it's time he is punished accordingly for his actions.

1:26 watch his blink rate RISE when he talks about the horse being injected. He knows and he got busted and is trying to get out of it. Problem is liars will unknowingly tell you the truth throughout their discussions and I'm pretty sure they used a cream in this case. Nobody asked him about a cream yet he brought it up

Yeah, Baffert’s story about the groom that was taking the banned substance as a medication, who then urinated in the horse’s straw, and the horse then decided to eat pissed upon bedding straw to get the doped drugs in its system is one of the great all-time doper clown stories of any doper in any sport. 😆

Bob deserves due process and fairness..Churchill Downs should have waited to make a statement and just because they have the technology in horse racing to test these horses over and over and at incredibly low levels does not mean they should...they need uniform standards and testing only to the extent it could affect a horse’s performance...

Due process would be banning persistent dopers like Baffert when they cheat over and over. The racing industry has been corrupted by the “too big to fail” attitude of its enforcement bodies that continually provide cover for and explain away the numerous doping offenses of trainers they’ve deemed are “too big to fail” like Baffert, Asmussen, etc...

I want to believe him.This is going to ruin his whole reputation. He knows that, so I have a hard time believing he would risk everything to try to win one more Derby or triple crown when his legacy is already set in stone and is financially secure. Sure 5 -10 years ago I'm sure he was doping them to the gills. But after winning two triple crowns, I have a hard time believing he was this dumb. But there are some people who will cheat to win no matter what. I'm trying to decide if he is one of those type of people.

He knew these tests were coming, he wouldn’t willingly jeopardize his reputation on the biggest day in racing. My guess is that a syringe was used to administer this (legal) drug to another horse, and not cleaned properly before being used on Medina spirit.

The vet can go back and see which horses in the barn were administered Betamethasone on the same day Medina Spirit may have been treated with something else using the same syringe. You may be onto something here.

21 picograms is the equivalent to less than 2 milligrams. 1 Baby aspirin has 88 milligrams of pain reliever in it. This is so minute a level it is questionable why a racing commission would make such an issue over that amount. Personally I think Kentucky horseman hate Baffert shipping in and beating them year over year. Something stinks here.

@Hoist The Flag Thank you. The example of "21 grains of salt (picograms) in an olympic-sized swimming pool" is a precise visual that's helpful to all of us non-veterinarians. Your definition of Bethasone as an equine ibuprofen is clear, too. And, Baffert has said repeatedly on camera in these sad days after such a heart-warming win that Medina Spirit simply has not ever been treated with it. At this point, I'm most disappointed in CD. That the test result was made public--however that happened--before the 2nd part of the test was even administered is simply t-o-t-a-l-l-y unacceptable.

He actually has a pretty good pedigree. Unbridled on the dam's side, AP Indy, Dynaformer, Giants Causeway, Holy Bull....a lot of classic distance runners. And he was 12-1 not really all that much of a long shot.

Agreed I love these people that comment that have never or will ever be a horseman trainer jockey groom or vet ask any vet what the amount will do absolutely nothing. The reason y it's the amount it is in kentucky is they don't want you to tap horses the day before the race in calf it would not have been a violation meds vary state to state I think he loses this one but I don't see how it changed the outcome. About 10 years ago a horse I owned got a positive for caffeine because coffee was spilled on his hay bale. In the 80s I'd feed my horses m and m s these are 1000 lb animals minor traces are a violation but not cheating or doping

I'm usually happy to pile on Bob but in this particular case I'm just too confused. I think there is a possibility someone outside his barn either nefariously messed with the horse or there is a mistake at the lab. That stuff can be administered by just rubbing it on the skin, how easy is that.

You could rub betamethasone all over a horse and it wouldn't show up in a blood test. For that it has to be injected. And I guarantee you Baffert has a night watchman. Baffert has skated close to the line for years. But the tests are much more sensitive now. He is using drugs to close to the race and the horse isn't clearing them. And betamethasone is often used to mask other drugs.

This is an ongoing problem for the sport. Many every day people are scepticle of Western medicine. Many people who would ban racing believe in all sorts of food fads, alternative medicines & assorted 'quackeries'. IMO we are dealing with massive consumer fraud. Look at Lance Armstrong, MLB & to some extent the NFL - people cheating for large sums of money along with stolen prestige. There seems to be no end to it.

We should wait to make any judgement until the test is confirmed. But Buffert had several charges before in other race tracks too. He seems to have good lawyers too.

I definitely think it would be some tampering with the tests. That man is just gifted at managing the horse to its peak on that day. It would be different if it only happened a few times that he won. He has won consistently. Drugs, however good they are, are not going to affect 7 horses in a way to win like that.

You can't use it on race day. You have a minimum level in the post race test. The rule is fair & workable. You seem to imply 'shoot the messenger'! If the infraction is by human touch or sabatoge that is still on the stable.

Baffert has been dirty for years. He violates the rules that many others follow. Better's love him because they know they have AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE betting on his horses. The race tracks use to love him because he would help the handle. I would call it a Dead Heat between Baffert and Richard Dutrow as to who is the most crooked.

Jones' great horses were dissappointing as stallions. Whirlaway & Citation don't have the impact on the breed that Jim Fitzsimmons has had with Nashua & Bold Ruler. Old timers have told me that trainers were using heroin (or an opiate) in the 40's but I've not been able to confirm that. I've often wondered why the 3 TC winners of the 40's had such little impact on the breed. Nashua is the dam sire of Mr. P & Bold Ruler is in every pedigree in the USA.

Bob Bafoon needs to be thrown out of the sport. He’s a serial cheater and every time he’s caught he gets a slap on the wrist. Other HOF trainers like Pletcher, Brown, Asmussen never have his problems. Bafoon is a danger to his horses, jockeys, and the betting public. When will the sport get some balls and rid itself of this serial cheater?

At least the Otomax story is plausible; it does in fact contain Betamethasone and could, theoretically, be used topically for fungal dermatitis. But the veterinarian who prescribed it is a dunce for recommending it for a competition horse that has to pass drug screens. And ultimately, Bob is also a dope for using it without reading the label first. Trainers responsibility. Should he be stripped of the Derby? Everyone runs under & is aware of the zero tolerance policy. Again, trainers responsibility. He should be taken down. Then a frank discussion should start about altering the zero tolerance policy to make it more realistic, if possible.
