A big special thank you once again to ‪@70sfan‬ for helping to uncover rare NBA footage. The film has been colorized from black and white, the frames have been corrected for natural flow and the clips were up-scaled to 4k.

Exactly. That's one of the things I myself didn't realize until recently. You see the way players were dribbling at that time and you don't understand why they dribble in that weird fashion, until you realize that if they were dribbling like today's players do, they would have been called for a carrying violation every single time. That also means that that's how they were taught to dribble. In any case, when Cousy started to play in the NBA, the NBA was just 4 years old. That means that, to a large extent, Cousy and his colleagues (and rivals) at that time were literally inventing the techniques that were later taught to great players from the '70s and '80s when they learned how to play basketball, and upon which they have improved (though, again, some of these improvements couldn't have taken place if it wasn't for rule changes).

No, the Harlem Globetrotters popularized this style of play, but Cousy was one of the first players who played like this in the NBA. The Globetrotters were entertaining crowds as early as the late 1920s. Officially, the Globetrotters played a few exhibition games against NBA teams & went undefeated for years, but they were viewed as a circus act compared to the NBA. This style was generally frowned upon & not allowed in the NBA until guys like Cousy came along in the 1950s.

This is about that players like JJ Redick should stop the disrespect and understand that these guys are the ones that began the evolution of NBA’s basketball. Bill Russell introduced blocks, Cousy the flashy playmaking ahead of their time. Guys like these and their playstyles literally saved the league from failing and going bankrupt in 50s-60s because they used to struggle attracting people until these guys came along. 5:24 is nuts. Fakes a no-look bounce ass, but with a ton of back spin, so it just hops right up waiting for him to turn back into it. I suspect there are a lot of dudes who could do this in the league, right now, but there's just too much money on the line to try. Same with that sweep hook, his hopping long ball - there's all this stuff he did that makes real good sense, and is basically unguardable, but gosh it sure looks funny, so there's no room for it. I get it, but it is marvelous to watch someone playing that freely, with such self-assuredness.

The NBA from 1948-78 relied on a handful of superstars who sold enough tickets to keep the league’s lights on until Bird and Magic showed up. Mikan. Cousy. Wilt. Elgin and Jerry. The Clyde Frazier Knicks. Pistol Pete. And Doctor J. They sold the tickets, and they kept the league afloat. They should not be underestimated.

I don't think people realize the differences in how the game was called back then compared to today. Carrying was really strictly enforced, which would empty out basically every modern player's bag. Even someone like Kyrie (though I'm sure he'd figure it out) might struggle to adapt and find ways to find his spots. If Cousy played under today's rules he would absolutely dice people up. Would be better than he was in his own era. Skill kills. He had it. And miss me with the athleticism shit. If not for Embiid's pity parade, Jokic would have three straight MVPs and would be in contention for his fourth this season with equally unathletic Luka Doncic as his biggets competition. Larry Bird and 160lb Steve Nash can also be counted in the ranks of back-to-back MVP winners despite their athletic limitations. If the skill level is there, great is great, regardless of the athleticism or generation.
