This is a rare one! This footage is from the DVD bootleg "Joan Baez Sings With Bob Dylan," and I overdubbed the original audio with a higher-quality recording. A portion of it can be seen in the documentary "Don't Look Back," but only about 15 seconds. This is the uncut scene. It's fascinating to watch Dylan revisit a song from the "old days," something he very rarely did. Enjoy this gem while you can!

it's like watching someone recall a dream, and suddenly it comes back to him. You'd be able to see the light in his eyes with out those glasses in that moment.

LOVE💖 I could listen to Bobby singing "da duh da dahhh" for hours. From the looks of it so would everyone in that room. Jesus they were so hopped up! On top of being talented...was there ever a more beautiful face?? I think not.

Coffee, Cigarettes, and Methamphetamines (speed), pretty standard stuff. Amphetamines are still very common prescribed energy boosting and focus enhancing drugs, Ritalin for instance is tweaked chemical form of its base which is amphetamine. Amphetamine salts are extremely common prescribed drugs to ADD and ADHD people.

This is my favorite Dylan song. It means almost EVERYTHING to me, in all of the ways. What a rare gem of a treat to watch him discovering how to create this song, or whatever you’d call his ‘process’.

This has been released. The first re-issue of 'Don't Look Back" on DVD included a second disc entitled "65 Revisited" and this scene appears that film. If you haven't seen the film, it's well worth obtaining for plenty of DLB outtakes, though there are more !

'65 - the first year I got to see him... barely 16, I stole my mom's 65 Impala Chevy and drove up I-5 to the Hollywood Bowl. Saw him come on stage solo for 45 minutes doing all his old stuff, then came the intermission and then all these people came on stage and started playing electronic music. I asked the guys to my right, "Hey - Any idea when Dylan's coming back on?" They pointed and said... "Um...That is Dylan..." It was Dylan and the BAND...hfs! And NO. I did not "boo". Seven years later in 1972, I got invited to a Philly Folk Fest afterparty in Bob Dylan's tiny Schwenksville motel room (nobody knew he was there!)... Maria Muldaur, Janis Ian, and others were reclined on the floor, he on a chair under a lamp. They asked him "Please - Play 2-10 train" and that's what he did. He was about 30 yrs old at that point and I soaked in every single second of that moment understanding my very unique privilege... what a precious memory!

Great! Lovely to hear his searching of the notes of the melody. At the beginning he is uncertain and he try to find the notes, than the melody arrive: let me die in my footsteps before I go down under the ground. The song has been written against the war, quoting some biblical passage. I adore his first footsteps ❤️

very common phenomenon this searching for order, it can be heard in many versions, even studio versions of Dylan; he begins, the band with him, and out of nowhere, tout d'un coup!, there is a coalescence that occurs and it is found; it's like he pulls these things out of the air, it is wonderful. Like the great Apollinaire, Dylan is a magus

For people wondering how he can't remember, my take is that he has simply forgotten it. He was writing so many songs/poems/lyrics in that period - he mentions in another interview 100-150!! He recorded this song as a throwaway outtake 5 years earlier, and probably never sung it again. As an amateur musician myself, I've forgotten more pieces of music and songs than I could count, if you don't play them regularly they disappear. You are constantly refreshing your brain with new material.

The expanded clip of this is an impromptu showing off of songs between Dylan and Donovan. You can see Donovan very briefly in this clip - blushing a little, I believe - because what I think is really going on here is that Donovan had demo'd his song 'Colours' and then Dylan has grabbed up the guitar to work out how to play it and kind of take the piss out of him for it. I may be wrong about this but I think that's what's at play. As great as Dylan was and Is (I am a big Dylan fan), he is not infallible. Personally I think this is one moment that displays rudeness and arrogance. ✌️😎

I don't get it, is it a joke? He's humming Let Me Die In My Footsteps, which he wrote in 1962, if not earlier, and of which there are versions around from that time. So here, in an outtake from Don't Look Back, he's acting like it has no words yet? I mean, I know Bob is a consummate BS'er and Crazy Man, but this is just off the charts.
@oliveeisner8964
@oliveeisner8964 3 жыл бұрын
Well I think near the beginning he says something about the words being corny so then he just hums the melody without them. It almost seems like he's imagining new ones. Then at the end he bursts out with "I'll have some words in no time at all". I guess he liked the tune but decided he didn't like the words.

It's not that similar to wild mountain thyme at all in terms of melody, tempo or chord progression, even by the standards of folk music, which by its nature is repeated themes and melodies with slight variations. He was a genius at taking an existing folk idiom and improving it with distinctive melodic hooks which pivot unusually but beautifully around the chord progressions. See how song to woody compares to guthrie's own 1913 massacre. The more psych stuff from his later career is just straight up original in every sense.
