Bob Dylan will always be my all time favourite artist, but there's still so many of his songs I haven't properly listened to. This is one of them. Glad I got to experience it with you. Loved the song and this video

From Bob's 1989 album "Oh Mercy". Always felt this was song to remind us that there is a fine line between good and bad. You only have so much time to show people who you are while your time here. One of Bruce Springsteen favourite Dylan's song. Enjoyably Dylan in style and presentation. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Stephen. Great tune for thought. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

His “Slow Train Comin” song and album. It was a real gospel album with every tune expressing his faith at that time. This in wonderful contrast to his album Infidels. Check out I and I”. Thanks Harry ✌️

Also listen to "Chimes of Freedom" - beautiful, poetic lyrics about the human race and those less fortunate than others fabulous song, some amazing live performances of it too

"No Mercy" is my favorite from BD along with "Slow Train Comin`". On both albums there are some tracks that are very bluesy and gospel like which I love a lot. Thanks sharing and best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)

Nanci Griffith, one of the most unappreciated artist! A great songwriter, musician and singer. So many songs both slow and upbeat. Start with "Love at the Five and Dime" live on the BBC. For a younger upbeat song, "Listen to the Radio" on Austin City Limits. .

Nanci Griffith? I've got to say you lost me on that one. Bob wrote it and Bob recorded it. (You've got to forgive me. I'm just a Dylan fan through and through. I can't see how anyone can do anything to top THE artist performing HIS poetry)

My interpretation (not that it matters) is NOW stop and listen to the pain of others. We can't wait for the coming or resurrection, we have to bring attention to and tend to the oppressed - here and now

Dylan had a three album gospel phase (Slow Train Coming, Saved, and Shot Of Love) but this is after on his 1989 album Oh Mercy so maybe Dylan kept his religious views from those albums and never converted back to Judaism (he’s ethnically very Jewish and was raised that way).

Thanks for all great reactions! But there's one track you absolutely must take on, even if it's the last thing you do. It's the favourite Dylan tune among a minority of hardcore fans, which ecstatically finished his concerts on the world tour in 1978 (and since then he hasn't played it one single time live). As far as I know, no person on KZfaq has reacted to it so far, but it's a masterpiece with a mesmerizing melody and an almost an insane lyrical juggling on tightropes between poetry, romance, politics and religion - right before his "religious period". It's a tall order, but it will be worth the effort! "Changing of the Guards" from the album Street Legal. Here's a link to it illustrated with lyrics: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqyCdNShqavcqXk.html

I know what you mean about the religious overtones, but this song was from after he had emerged from his evangelical phase. My take on this is that he's pretty clear on the existence of a higher power, but he's understandably cynical about humanity's ability to transcend war, disease, hate - really any of the things humanity continues to both suffer and inflict, when even our understanding of belief alternates us from one another. A beautiful song.

Love this song. My favorite is the live version from his bootleg series Vol 8: Tell Tale Signs. It’s a rawer version, sans Daniel Lanois production. But packs more emotional punch imho. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6eCY6yq0M7NnoU.html There is great cover from Heart and another from Chris Cornell as well.

This is one of many Dylan songs where the Dylan version is not my favorite. Look up Sarah Jarosz' version from the Americana sessions. Just her, a mic, and an octave mandolin. Amazing.

"for those of us that are left" "for the few that will judge the many" Its about the human race falling apart quite soon and the fact that almost no one can see the how and the why it happens Those poor sheep

You think its some kind of religious thing? Gee! Ya think?! Its the most powerful indictment of dying christianity ever written. Selah.
