Bob Geldof, Humanitarian and former BoomTown Rats Frontman tells everyone how & Why the song " I Don't Like Mondays" by The BoomTown Rats was to come to be and how he was thanked by the Spree Killer herself for him making her famous, something which Bob psychologically wrestles with even to this very day.

First off. Bob Geldof didn't make her famous.. she did that all herself. The other point is that this song is timeless. Unfortunately. I mean, decades into the future we had more school shootings.. but the song itself really captures the angst of I think everyone, especially now.. how fucked up our society is, how depressed folks are.. how Mondays DO suck.. how work SUCKS how school SUCKS.. it all SUCKS and while most of us won't murder innocent folks.. we need to start addressing the mental health issues in our society cause we are doing something majorly wrong.

The performance of it at Live Aid is astonishing. Incredibly powerful. The subject matter is shocking as is the letter Geldof received which he refers to in this interview. Awful. At Live Aid, the lyric and pause took on a whole new meaning in the context of the reason for the concert, famine relief. To this day, Live Aid is remarkable. The DVD is like a time capsule of great music and thrilling memories from so many great performances at Wembley and in Philadelphia. It will never be repeated.

Had no clue that's what the song is about. But apparently the girl who committed the first ever school shooting in America was a scumbag. A coward too. She targeted younger children from the safety of her room and never stepped foot on school grounds that day. Turns out her dad is a scumbag too. Threatening to sue them over the song. He should be grateful that piss poor parenting isn't a criminal offense. He'd be rotting next to his good-for-nothing daughter in prison for the rest of his life, if it was.

I used to love this song until we moved to Southern California & I saw a long documentary focusing, not only on that awful morning but on the people I believed "pushed" Brenda Spencer to do what she did. have written a rather longer comment than intended on the "Boomtown Rats VEVO" presentation regarding the events leading up to & included in the song. Brenda Spencer, 16, took the rifle that her father had bought her, & started shooting randomly across the road into the schoolyard of Grover Cleveland Elementary, mowing down the head teacher, the school custodian (caretaker) & wounding eight of the children playing just before school began. Brenda is a softly-spoken woman with long, "red" hair & large glasses. She said that she didn't hate Mondays more than any other day. However, when the police walked her through the crowds of reporters, they were yelling the usual stupid questions, the main one being, "Why did you do it?" She hung her head & quietly replied, "I don't like Mondays". By the time the, rather long, documentary had ended, I actually didn't hate Brenda but felt a little sorry for her (once I'd weighed up what each of her parents said what they did). Divorced at the time of the shootings, Brenda's father bought the rifle Brenda used as a gift for her!!! Brenda had been sent to live with her mother who saw her as, too much bother & sent her to live with her father whom she already believed was sexually abusing her......... This girl in her mid-teens & bullied at school & allegedly raped day & night in what should have been a safe haven for her - home! She had been a sweet child but was tortured, both mentally & physically, from the time she went to school, well into the night. I watched two of her parole hearings & she is deeply remorseful but I don't think she'll ever see freedom. I knew Brenda pulled the trigger, but her father's money & the torment he allegedly enforced upon her warped her mind, as, I'm sure did the idea that, even though her mother knew about it all - She didn't care about her either!!

Brendas story doesnt ad up but it does show the system is messed up, look how many shootings since then, school is being institutionalized, its not much different from prison, yes u go home after 8 hours but you r forced to sit and get your head filled with lies. Brenda saying she hates Mondays makes perfect sense, its 5 more days of bullshit and with bad parents its the begining of 7 more days. I enjoy life but i remember being a kid and it was awful looking back on it.

@@nobodysreview6137 I think almost anyone, except a few, had horrible experiences. Some, including myself, who loathed Mondays & the rest of the week. I never understand people who say they wish that they could have their schooldays/youth over again. Personally, l think they're either deluded or need a psyche. evaluation & I don't say that glibly!! However, take someone like Brenda, living between two homes but mostly in one where, even her mother alludes to the notion that her own father was sexually abusing her & no friends to speak of. Brenda Spencer was a powder keg already. Said father then buys Brenda a .22 calibre semi-automatic with a scope. On the same morning S.D.P.D. say she had also consumed drugs & alcohol. You mentioned the further school shootings. I grew up in a European country where your life, from the day you were born on up, could be the day you are shot or blown to death by a bomb, at any time. In fact, I lost most of my hearing to an explosion when shopping with my mother on a Saturday afternoon, aged four. A lot of us have had reasons to go crazy but didn't. I've thought a lot about the never-ending argument, is it accessibility to guns or the people who are to blame? I noticed that as time has gone on these disasters have increased. Why? Accessibility to weapons is one to ponder. However, I have "grown" with computers. From the days when only four huge machines could be fitted along a wall & the most exciting thing we could do was write binary programs until today when you can "shoot" any number of players & everyone walks away - alive! Even watching my own mother refusing to become unattached from her mobile (never mind the ever-maligned teenagers). I believe three things are possibly responsible for continued & ever-increasing shootings, etc. Legality of weaponry for civilians, ever-increasing divorce rate (I couldn't imagine being pulled apart by the people who brought me into the world) & "distancing" brought about by computer programs who turn death into a game from which everyone comes away laughing & more & more time spent away from human contact on computers. Sorry for the long comment but I didn't want to give you a glib answer & have put a lot of thought into the answer I've given.

You can be upset and depressed and angry about your family, but everyone has a conscience. Once you become a shooter, that's it. It's over. Uncrossable line.

If only the average person would look into shootings as deep as you did. People are quick to pin it all on guns and say "normal citizens shouldn't be able to have this", but they ignore the majority of gun owners who have a strong moral conscience. It's the person behind the barrel of the gun to blame and you have to look at all the things that influenced them up to the point of pulling the trigger - normal people do not pull triggers while pointing barrels at school children. It'll be a dysfunctional/abusive family, constant bullying or a feeling an exclusion from society.

Thanks for this post. I really don't know why I got into this. I live in a country where we have not had a mass shooting or school shooting. I grew up in a country that has perfected mass shootings and school shootings. Then I saw people mocking the song. What the what? Maybe people are so desensitized that mass shootings and school shootings are nothing.

Eldon Stracke II I think the very first recorded school shooting was February the 29th, 507,434 BC.(was a leap year). I read about it in The Bedrock Times. A friend of Barney Rubble, threw a spear into the playground of their local elementary school. It missed hitting anyone, because they moved out the way as the spear was coming. A local reporter for the Times said, "Him throw big sharpy stick at young learny place. Him not good at throwing."

Kate Chan I’m 23 (born 1996) and I know the story quite well. I look into a lot of the worlds history (no matter the year). I used to sit downstairs and listen to 60,70s etc... almost everyday (Before he moved out) and he explained the story behind this song. I was 18 when I was told the story. I swear I just remember thinking about how sexy Bob was 😍then dad told me about the tragedy of it all 😞
