I always loved the Scenes with Patrick Duffy and Ted Shackleford. They acted like they were really brothers. I would have loved for Barbara Bel Geddes (Miss Ellie) to have been on the show at that time. She could have told Gary about her own Battle with Breast Cancer. In the UK on The Soap Opera Hollyoaks they did a Storyline on how Tony Hutchinson played by Nick Pickard since the show debuted in 1995 had Testicular Cancer. They never did that on US Soaps.

The beauty of this show is that it allowed the actors to shine in their performances. The dramatic storylines were very well paced and handled more realistically than on “Dallas”. Great scene, great writing, great acting ... you have to dig deep in these shows' histories to see that both of these prime-time soap operas were very real, sincere family dramas before the onslaught of the campy mid-80s which forced every woman to dress as glamour pusses even for breakfast scenes and every story to be as sensational as it could be. Here we have two brothers who hit to the core of what it is to be not only family but also human.

It can exist, I lived across the street from this guy a few years ago, that was from a very wealthy family, they were very well known in Dallas where I live. I became friends with him, and he was an alcoholic, (recovering) and I think he had been into drugs in his younger years. Very nice guy, but sort of a loser. His parents had bought him the house, I think so he would have a nice place to live, they would know where he was, and to sort of stay away from the family. My street was more middle class, like the Knots Landing cul de sac, and it was funny, I always knew when his Daddy came to visit, he drove a Bentley. This guy's father was part owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team and was in oil exploration. His wife was blonde and a real hick from the sticks. lol...It was funny, yet sad. I never said this to their face, but my wife and I used to refer to them as Gary and Val Ewing. lol....Several times his older brother came over, driving a Ferrari Testarossa. It was because deep down JR feared Gary the most, not only because he was Miss Ellie's favorite child, but he probably knew that if Gary had the same personality he had but with just an ounce of the Ewing's backbone and will, that he would have had it all, even Jock would be impressed and proud. Therefore Gary was always the brother JR feared most and wanted him out of Southfork and out of his hair.

Simple sibling rivalry. Gary was Miss Ellie's favorite, Bobby was Jock's golden boy. Leaving JR out in the cold.

I think he hated Gary because he was different. In one episode he said that he didn't like Gary because he wrote poetry. He was saying that he was soft, not a real Ewing. And Jock didn't respect Gary. So, that also was good enough for JR. At least JR could be Number 2 in Jocks eyes.
