The 1958 1959 U.S. Chess Championship game between Bobby Fischer and Samuel Reshevsky saw a brilliant combination as early as move 10. Attention to move order was especially important in this "prolonged 10-move encounter". Reshevsky's 8...Na5 had him falling victim to a devastating chess trap. Fischer's reply practically ended the game before it ever really got started.

Great analysis. The inclusion of hypothetical situations was a great help, as was suggesting us to pause the video and figure out white's next move. Thanks!

Thank you Jerry for sharing so much insight into the game of chess and to each illustrated game. Much respect for Reshevsky for doing as well as he did for so long after losing the queen. Good battling. You never know when the other side may blunder.

10:17 Nc7 -- I was going to ask about this until I saw Qb7 Rxa6 Qxc7+ Kh6(if king moves to back row, Qc8+ wins the rook)... watching your channel really does help. Keep it up, Jerry :P

When I use to read books on chess e4 was written as P-k4 if I remember correctly. That is to say the pawn moves to the 4th square directly in front of the king. Samuel's second move would be written as P-QB4. Seems some rules have changed eh?

That was the older way of notating games. The newer version is called algebraic notation where every square has a letter and number.
@richardoneill4314
@richardoneill4314 5 жыл бұрын
The older notational system records the move from each individual players perspective so white goes PK4 and black goes PQB4 each from their own perspective whereas modern algebraic have the squares fixed with their own letter and number ie square e4

The game was salvagable. At 10:17 black could move knight to c7 and the pawns dead. As long as u keep getting rid of the pawns a knight and rook can draw a queen or mabye even win if he forces a pawn himself
@allanj6598
@allanj6598 5 жыл бұрын
Qb7 would pin the knight against the king so you are forced to capture with ra6 then Qxc7 check. You're left with Queen 3 pawn vs Rook 3 pawn.

Why eat the queen with a king when you can use the rook instead and better positioning as well?

Its weird when you say "Eat" a piece but there is a number of people who use it haha, even in my country we use the word "eat" but we use the word in our language of course. I've always thought that it was funny/weird and that I was the only one who thought that.
@2eanimation

He mentioned eating the queen with the king isn‘t the best move, taking with the rook threatens mate in one if black tries to sneakily get the piece back with a6

it's extremely saddening to know that Queen vs 2 Bishops is a tablebase draw but chess is also a tablebase draw, I believe, so that's a relief actually, now that I'm thinking about it. And it's also a nice challenge, to win a "drawn" position.
