There was this ground breaking technology called books, which were published back then. Bobby had mentioned he heavily relied on chess books in multiple interviews.

Even Fischer himself complained about the increase in theory as he got older. He knew chess was becoming more about memorization than creativity. I remember looking at USCF ratings in summer 1971. Fischer was 2825. Second place was not even 2600. It was something like 2585. Fischer ended up losing rating points in the match against Spassky finishing up at 2810 USCF.

If he was playing today then very likely his rating would be much higher just because top ratings are higher nowdays, impossible to say how he would match up against someone like Carlsen though. However if everyone back in 1972 had todays computers and chess engines then arguably his rating would have been lower. His opponents would likely have gained more from the tech than he did and potentially been able to at least make more draws.

Nah I don't know if Bobby would be suited to an engine era. My opinion is that if Bobby were to be born and play in the modern world then he would be very strong but Carlsen would likely be better, however if Carlsen were to go back and be born and play in Fischer's era then Fischer would have dominated him.

We will never know that unfortunately but that is part of what makes chess so exciting to me. That we will never know. Same with basketball, or any sport. Think about Larry Bird, would he have been the basketball GOAT if he hadn't gotten injured and retired after 13 years? He was the smartest player of all time. As it stands, with Magnus having engine knowledge, I think Magnus beats Fischer handily. If Magnus would not have had engine knowledge, or Fischer would have, it'd be a lot different I bet.

@@JW-qd3ol Na even with engine knowledge Fisher puts tough fight. Unlike most players of that era, Fisher was highly accurate even by today's engine evaluations. With equal resources, he destroys anyone else.

If Fischer had access to engines, he wouldn't have played chess you dimwits. Fischer hated memorization and quit chess once engines started becoming a thing. So no he wouldn't dwarf shit because he'd probably be the cashier at McDonald's.

Magnus started without engine too and even after the engines and many players who grew up with the engines, Magnus still dominates. Put more credit to his name.

At that era, everyone had no engines. You all bobby fans bringing engine like everyone had but bobby didnt.

With any competative skill, being able to face off against others who are similarly good, or better, is a huge boon towards your own improvement. Engins cirkumvent this. But since they didn't exist, the effect becomes that the soviet gms had lots of other gms to cut their teeth against, but bobby didn't have anyone who he could practice against besides himself and his competition internationally.

People who don’t consider him the goat clearly don’t value “dominance” so much as some other people do. To me this is a very important criteria and why Morphy and Fischer are my top choices, and then Magnus, Kasparov and Karpov enter my top 5. But i respect other people methods pf judging.

@@Ash-rx5wl I think that's the point. That, he was so far ahead of anyone else at his time. Of course you couldn't be expecting his gameplay to have accuracy like Kasparov's or Carlsen's. The theory of chess was only so much developed back then. If you put modern greats in his era with only that much theoretical knowledge then most of them will get destroyed. Also the fact that he wasn't child chess prodigy like others and started playing much later like 10 or something, that's insane. He was pure genius. Given all the theory and engines, there's no way he doesn't rank in top 3. Bobby Fischer can still be argued to be the greatest though as he had both the creativity and genius as well as highly accurate plays like more modern top players.

Bobby has an ELO of 2895. Fide has calculated this by taking into account all of his games before elo was invented. Bobby was literally the strongest chess player in existence
