Bobby Heenan discusses why Jesse Ventura really hated Hulk Hogan, dating back from AWA all the way to WWF. Stream New Shoot Interviews 📺 TitleMatchNetwork.com
The late-great Bobby "The Brain" Heenan talks about his time around both Jesse Ventura and Hulk Hogan both in American Wrestling Alliance & World Wrestling Federation.
Bobby mentions how Jesse idolized Superstar Billy Graham and adopted a simliar gimmick. When Hogan came into AWA it took away from Ventura's shine since the character was also a portrayal of Superstar.
This interview was originally produced by RF Video Inc in 2002. Licensed for distribution on Title Match Network.

We can all have our own opinions, but I've always thought Bobby to be a very straight shooter. When Bobby first became ill, I searched online and came across an email address for him and sent him a thoughtful email. He actually took the time to write me back. I truly believe he valued his fans and appreciated hearing from them.

Another great video Title Match! I wonder if this wrestling notion is true : that your great admirations come from your best enemies. Also , The Ventura-Union-Hogan scandal burned the bridge completely.

Bobby "The Brain/Weasel" Heenan is a smart man, who was the manager of (many) champions; he was also great on the mic/stick, with his promo work & funny zingers at "Prime Time Wrestling's" late co-host, Gorilla Monsoon (post-TNT ("Tuesday Night Titans") show; pre-"Monday Night RAW" days from the Manhattan Center, in New York (specifically mid-town Manhattan); when the first RAW shows were only 1 HOUR long.)... Now, RAW is like 3 hours long, just like WCW's Monday Nitro show. "Oh, Will you Stop !" - Gorilla Monsoon

It's funny how you see people differently when you get older. As a kid watching wrestling, depending on your personal values, you cheer the good guys and hate the bad guys. The managers copped it worse because of the way they'd interfere in the matches, and you just want to see a fair match. Then you get older, understand wrestling is business, and now that it is mostly a work (kayfabe was strong when I was younger), and you begin to see the bad guys for what they are; an essential component to any match, because if there were not bad guys, who would you cheer for? The same can be said of any movie or TV show. I used to hate Major Burns and Major Winchester in MASH, because I was too young to understand their role and appreciate their characters' motivations. Once you can see past the surface, things become a lot clearer, and the lines between good and bad become very blurry, at least on TV.

I heard Ventura say, many years ago, that the wrestlers were trying to organize a union, and that Hogan told Vince McMahon about it and Vince squashed it. He said he considered Hogan a "friend" until this.

Actually no, most wrestlers were cool with him, its the melter and cornette fans who twist everything negative. The wrestlers that do hate Hulk all unironcally have the worst reputations with the other wrestlers - Brett, Savage, Shawn, Warrior, etc.

Heenan stayed true all those years. When Hogan turned heel in WCW, Heenan, as an announcer, said he appreciated the attitude change but still hated him. He never put Hogan over in a positive way in all those years. Kept the character alive from start to finish.

I agree Heenan was easily the greatest manager, but people are sleeping on his commentary with Gorilla Monsoon. He and Gorilla had some absolute gems since Heenan basically stayed a heel in commentary while calling. I didn’t know until after he died that he and Gorilla were like best friends in real life and it killed his when gorilla passed away. He was in WCW at the time and had to do commentary on Nitro the whole night while mourning the great Gorilla Monsoon.

I think it’s the opposite. I think Hulk Hogan thought about Jesse Ventura as Ventura gained success outside of wrestling. Ventura starred in better films, became Governor of Minnesota, and hosted his own television show. Jesse Ventura said “I cannot be friends with someone I don’t trust.” I fully agree with Ventura.
