Written by guitarist Sonny Curtis and drummer Jerry Allison around an hour in 1959. The hook was left unfinished at the time, and at the time of recording, the hook was left this way with no vocals, only the "wo-wo yay-yay," which became a memorable part of the song. The single went on to become a minor hit in the UK, entering the Top 40 and peaking at 26.. .Their original version hit #42 on British Record Retailer Chart on 5/12/60
Where Bobby Vee version peaked at 4 on the UK Singles Chart.

I like this version much better than the Lee Sayer or when Sayer did a duo with Glen Campbell. Bobby Vee had that quality to his voice of a young love and first time broken heart. (I recall that agony of when I was only 13 and this song captured how badly that boy hurt me.)

And almost a year later we lost another singer/songwriter, Glen Campbell. Hard to believe it has been almost five years since we lost Bobby. Fortunately, we have him forever (hopefully) on KZfaq. I also have all of his music on vinyl. I was fortunate enough to be at a concert 20 years ago when Sonny Curtis played this song.

All of us guys ate our hearts out over not having a head of hair like Bobby Vee, the Everly Brothers, Steve Reeves, Frank Gifford, Rock Hudson, and Tony Curtis. I join the through of those who are deeply saddened by the passing of Bobby Vee, who helped ratify that the human voice is God's most colorful and uniquely moving instrument.

Could say bring it to every Bobby Vee song. He had so many simple, romantic, lost love type nostalgic songs from the best mini-era in pop music, the early 60s. Orchestration, voice, message. In every song it's there.

This song must have set some sort of record for being perennially in the UK charts. It's unforgettable for me because when he sang on a very dull Sunday morning on a BBC radio "pop" show, he actually got a reaction: When he sang "Am I just another guy?" - Three hundred girls yelled "No!" (I was even more surprised than he seemed to be.... then we went on to Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen to calm us all down.....)

Sadly, everyone sitting on that lawn is now either dead, or a "geezer." You can deduce to which of the two groups I belong. One of the most touchingly arranged orchestrations for any of his recordings. Hard to limit listening to this enthralling recording just one time in one sitting. I'm good for 3 or 4. The gal in the brief close-ups with the nerdy guy is actress Barbara Parkins, who is now 75 as of 2/24/18. "Dolls" like this were just crawling out of the woodwork during this era in Hollywood. Diane Baker was another. (I left a couple of remarks earlier which are about 30 remarks into the "newest comments" section.) Oh, if our lives could have been as pleasant and uncomplicated , more often, as the scene depicted in this charming video.
