Great video Bob! One thing for other shooters to note is that 99% of the time the OEM chokes are labelled based on lead shot. For example, the modified choke that came with the SBE III in this video is classified based on lead not steel. If you take a full steel choke and measure it and then measure a modified OEM choke that came with your gun likely the modified choke will be smaller in diameter or equal to the full steel choke. But Bob's point about picking a choke and sticking to it is great advice, I did this a few years ago and it's the way to go. If you are thinking about the type of choke, distance, and shot size all while trying to wing shoot you will miss. While you're doing all that thinking you're going to break focus on the target, slow your swing down, and miss behind the bird most likely. I shoot wood ducks from blinds at 10-20 yards and Canadas out to 50 yards with the same Long Range Carlson Cremator in my Franchi Elite 3.5 and if the bird doesn't go down it's on me not the choke. Another thing to keep in mind is gun fit, if the gun does not fit you your point of aim and impact won't be the same and no matter the choke you likely will miss birds. Final note, PATTERN YOUR GUN!!!! Choke tube brand is merely a starting point, try something you've heard good things about and if it doesn't work move on to another brand of choke or ammunition. Then practice, practice, and practice some more. Bod keep these shotgun videos coming they are great learning tools for new hunters and a great way to pass along experiences!!!

Good vid! I agree with everything you said. I grew up hunting and doing everything using a 12 gauge 870 wing master with a full choke 30 in barrel, I’m a very good shot with it. I wanted to try something new so I recently bought a new Stoeger M3500. Love my new gun but it’s definitely a learning curve and having multiple chokes messes with you mentally.

I learned early on even before having my own shotguns, I could shoot a shotgun well, using other peoples when I was younger, but noticed I shot better with tighter choked guns with the way I like to shoot. When I got my own, I bought an aftermarket-(for running steel), full choke for my first pump gun, got to where I could throw pairs of clays by hand and smoke both of them with it. Ever since, I now have several shotguns, and have ran full chokes in all and with a little practice I seem to hit about everything I shoot at. When I dove hunt I have to jump shoot them out of cut fields like quail. Let me tell you, that’s about the hardest shooting there is! Only thing might be harder to me is ducks at 5 yards left to right right on top of you. But I still love my full.

Bobby, I can’t emphasize enough to measure your chokes. Different manufacturers have different tolerances. My Carlson Cremator L/R measures in at .699 and my factory full measures in at .686. Never in a million years would I have imagined factory box chokes would have been tighter. My factory IC chokes measures in at exactly the same as my Carlson Cremator M/R, both being .715. Measure everything and pattern your guns, best advice I have for anyone new to the sport.

Have been using 3/4 (in pair of winchester sse gen2 shells) for close to ten years now. and it is quite good for me at least, it makes a mess at close range but gives some reach and leaves almost no wounded behind. Shot size variations for different birds and time for season also but that works for me pretty damn good. This season, 6 shots 5 ducks down only one lost because of yellowjacket nest under the boat i tried to use to get it.
