I've shot factory chokes for years cause I never thought the after market ones were really all that much better, but early this summer I invested in a kicks high flyer full choke and it has me excited for this upcoming season. The patterns I have been getting out of it on paper and the performance on the skeet range have me throughly impressed thus far.

I have 8 different size choke tubes. I was out testing 00 buckshot today, with them. Good times...... Around .030 of restriction seems to be the sweet spot for about any load. For a standard bore shotgun(.730), that means a full choke(.700) should serve you pretty well, for most applications. Great video!!! I thoroughly enjoy patterning(and slugs).

Agreed,my old sxs is full chocked and my buddy always says good luck mate at the clay club but when it gets to those distant crossers I’m smashing them with ease,as you said though,it takes a bit of practice for those closer ones

My old man was one of the best shotgun shooters I’ve ever seen. He would always say” Open chokes are for those who can’t shoot” lol. He used full choke for everything.

Old timer I knew took deer and even a couple elk at 75-85 yards with real hot, 3 ½ magnum 000 buck. Real long 28 inch barrel, full choke. I swear each pellet must've hit like a .30-30 or something cause they fell instantly that far out.

@@GallopingWalrus When I was a kid I dropped a large doe walking up a shallow river towards me at around 65 yards. Was my dad's old, beat up, ratally, High Standard 12 gauge, 28" barrel, no choke (smoothbore), Winchester Super X 00 Buckshot, 2 3/4". I wasn't the best shot yet back then but 4 out of 9 pellets hit her. One in through the neck, one top of the neck into her spine, one into the center of her chest between her front legs, and one right between the eyes. She dropped instantly like a sack of potatoes. Did two kicks after hitting the water and that was it. Then she started floating downriver so I had to quickly do the fastest 100 yard dash in my life from my blind...😁 Guys get weird about 00 Buck. If you hunt with it regularly in the right shotgun it's a one shot show stopper everytime. Nothing less than 12 Guage though (I've had some nightmare experiences with a Remington 20 gauge when I was young). And while patterning is important, I think all this playing around with choke sizes is kind of moot if you're talking 00 Buck and shots within the usual 50 yard range. That's more of a birdshot concern, IMO. I have a Mossberg 835 right now with the factory Modified 750 choke that throws 00 Buckshot about basketball to "Beach ball" size at 70 yards with the occasional flyer here and there. That's more than enough pattern for me! Anything over a 50 yard shot is more on the rare occasion side. Would like to try one of those Buck Kicker chokes one day though!

Yes, useful to see pattern vids with steel shot. However, this is really best done in each person's individual shotgun.

Kicks high flyer full and pattern master code black goose pattern great. I have had major success with Kent steel shells and federal steel and lead. I also like Winchester Texas heavy dove but Winchester experts steel can be hit or miss. I also like Remington nitro mags. How about a beginner video on snow geese , specks, honkers.

Woodpigeon hunting is one of the most popular hunts in the UK if that's the country you're referring to. No limits as they're considered a pest.

My wife got a franchi and her pattern was in the same general area. We used the shim kit that the franchis come with to get it shooting 60/40 which to me is perfect for clay games and shooting birds

Kicks extended high flyer full out of my Browning silver 12ga with Kent fasteel or if I feel like taking a beating that day a kicks extended high flyer full out of my Browning BPS 10ga with Federal premium. I know lots of people that shoot this choke and they all agree it's the best choke out there!

Thanks for sharing Bobby. Definitely an interesting video to see the difference between the two chokes. Pretty good patterns with both actually with your pigeon loads, but the full definitely SMACKED that target with more force. I know for a fact in my limited hunting that shoot placement and practice is key, but those Canadas have what I call Iron Feather especially in the winter and can be tough to bring down. I would like to see a steel load video of the same format or if you do a patterning vid comparing say a higher priced load like Hevi-Metal and a lower one like Kent, Rio, Winchester Super X with both chokes. I went with a Patternmaster long range/extended range choke (thankfully I worked at Cabela's at the time and got a sweet discount because those are EXPENSIVE) and it patterns well with the Hevi Metal. I can't use loads with flight control wads with that choke, but I can with the factory modified. I have thought about getting a cheaper extended modified/mid range choke perhaps like that Carlson. I also have a couple buddies that like the Kicks High-Flyer.

Some people try and find the best patterning shell for their gun and compare it with cost. Can they get away with some lesser priced shells, instead of buying a $250 case of Hevi Metal 2 shot. Bobby thanks for responding with info on chokes from prior video...in keeping with that same theme I would love to see a video exploring steel shot ..but take it a step further... difference between the 12 gauge 3 inch verse 3 1/2 but also difference with shot size..6,4,2,bb shot...I'm thinking there may be a huge difference in shot retention in the sweet zone at yardage with different sizes ....keep up the great vids

Should show patterns with waterfowl ammo too. Also see what effect barrel length has if you can find some significant variations. 26-28-30 is not likely to show much difference! I have a 20" 12GA threaded for chokes, but not sure how common that is! I had it made for home defense.

I have a problem I’m hunting ducks in larose Louisiana and I shoot a s&w 30 inch full choke but I think the pattern is to tight yesterday I shot at a butt load of ducks sad to say I never hit one may I add we had a 40 mile an hour north wind is it the full choke do I need a modified

We hunt pigeon and crow more than geese (although we do shoot geese) here in England , but this is very handy to see as I'm debating keeping full choke in the bottom barrel. Nice upload

Your my favorite waterfowl youtuber Bobby! I use a patternmaster choke by far my favorite choke I've ever owned.. its desisned to drop birds dead on the water no cripples what so ever. Never been so impressed. Please check the patternmaster choke tubes out, you wont regret it!

im using a 20 gauge without choke and using 8 shot .. last year i really had to get close to the grouse to hit them ... would a modified choke with 7 1/2 shot help with range? i was also thinking of changing the barrel with a longer one but there as expensive as the whole gun itself

Carlson Cremator Long range constriction is .700 witch is the same constriction of a Improve Modified. Look at the spec. Carlson Cremator is a freaking good choke that said ! Good show Bobby, keep sending it!!

What size steel shot are you putting through a full choke? Everything I have read says #2 maximum, and that's not enough for geese. I am reading a box of 3" federal BB shot right now that says not recommended for full choke.

Depending on what size shot your shooting the choke needs to change. If I’m hunting high flying birds with O/U I use a light full and a improved modified. If I’m busting skeet I’ll use modified and improved cylinder. When using my semi auto. I use a modified for bird hunting. I use extra full for turkeys. And when shooting 000 buck shot I always use a skeet choke. Larger shot like 000 will compress together in a tight choke and pull off one another after it leaves the barrel.

Cylinder bore for slugs, and either a full or improved modified choke for the steel, since beretta mobil chokes are steel proof in all constrictions less than xtra-full. I would look at carlson's choke tubes

I recently purchased my first "nicer" shotgun. The rest have been cheap tactical style before this. But anyway I got a Beretta a300 Ultima, and I've been experimenting with different chokes. So far the Carlson extended chokes seem to work best for me. I would like some input on what choke works well for slugs? Also should the choke be rifled or not? 👍😁🇺🇲

Bobby have you done a steel shot comparison with chokes? I've done it with my Berretta Extrema 2 with all the loads I shoot but have noticed a difference in steel vs lead at 30-40 yards. I know you're a fan of Federal but mine patterns steel best with Rem Hypersonics 1 shot and lead Federal Premiums Pheasant Forever 6's.

I have the extended choke and I'm still trying to get used to it. Because the pattern is soo tight in 20-30 yards where shooting Clay's I literally have to put the beed on the clay. But I did make my longest shot. 85+ yards in south Dakota on a snow goose

I tried the full choke last season and wasn’t killing birds. Modified for me. I guess I need a little room for error... sent a few bbs right through a red heads neck and head the other day. DRT!

Have seen lots of video on choke selection,but not too many about barrel length and choke selection. I Have Browning with 2 barrels one is full choke and a 26 inch barrel with rifle sights. The other is a 32 inch barrel with a full choke vented rib sight. Which would you use for ducks geese pheasants grouse l prefer the 26" cuz it is easier to carry.Short barrel will spread shot more??

you should try number 6 shot high brass with the full choke i"ve always had very good lucky shooting rabbit pheasant an woodcock

I perfer a mod if they are coming in close and a full if thay are farther. I also use a extra full choke for snow geese
