I find Carroll Gibbons' piano playing a joy to listen to, so it's frustrating he recorded so few solos! Here's a superb side from 1930 - a delight from start to finish.

Carroll Gibbons - one of my favorite pianists! He was hugely talented. Too bad there aren't more recordings of his piano solos. He probably had better opportunities on radio. Gibbon's style of playing was unique to his era - great flowing melody in syncopated rhythmic style (Gershwin is another prime example, Ohman and Arden, Monia Liter and others).

Exquisite with Carroll in his usual top form. The violin and clarinet support is also superb. Just a wonderful side.

Excellent recording. I saw a copy of this on ebay recently and now wish i'd bought it. He did a whole load of solo piano recordings in his series of records ""Carroll Gibbons Calls the tunes". It starts at no. 1 and goes up to I believe no. 26. It is only the main part of each song but I love his style of playing as it's just so effortless.

He is one of mine also. He is a very tasteful arranger and soloist and has a way of making very difficult things sound effortless (I know I have transcribed some of his solos). Thank you Jonathan for sharing this fine recording. Certainly sounds like Van Phillips - he has a wonderful tone. Compare to his recording of Sing You Sinners with Billy Mayerl. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9ygZLSZnr_NdY0.html I play the piano solo of Gibbons' Moonbeams Dance which he also recorded with a small similar ensemble about the same time. I don't know where I heard or read this, but I somehow have it in my mind that Reg Pursglove may have been the violinist on Moonbeams Dance. It could well be Siday here (or on Moonbeams Dance), but Pursglove could also be a contender.

@@JonathanHolmesjazz 3 lines of patent info on the Columbia disc indicates 1940-1946. Catalog number dates to c. 1941
