Cultural norms for appearance present unrealistic standards or beauty which may contribute to woman's dissatisfaction. This is a presentation of the effects that body shaming and ideal body standard have on people's lives. It explores the ways that body image and ideal body standards vary depending on the culture of different countries. I am currently a senior at ETSU majoring in International Affairs with a minor in Psychology. I am originally from Vientiane, Laos. Wanting to pursue a higher education, I decided to come to the United States. I am a creative art scholar, and I am currently working for the East Tennessean, the ETSU newspaper, as an advertising assistant manager. I am passionate in discussing eating disorders, as I had experience it in the past. My biggest dream is to be working for the United Nations as a humanitarian. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

People that make comments about other people bodies are very insecure with themselves and need to look in the mirror. You look great and I’m proud of you. I went to a family event and someone mentioned how I need to eat more. I didn’t even reply to what they said or pay them attention.

Family gatherings are toxic, I can relate to it very well. I usually avoid such toxic places. I still remember once I went for a wedding and was excited to meet my relatives after a long time and the first thing they said to me was you have lost hair, you became dark, gained weight.and all that bla bla bla... Such nonsense. Why are people bothered about other's bodies🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
