I have a BUNCH of those bolbitis ferns. I love them. They do so much better in slow flow low/medium light!

Be patient. It takes months to build up its root system in non Co2 tanks. If you have CO2? THIS is a dynamite plant. Slow in my tank..but looks compact and lush. In time,I expect leaves to grow more in length.

I had never known they are like anubias and slow growers; they make it perfect plants for nano scapes in trees or tranches or woods on the back or on top with low light.. I only use 3W led reading lamp lights and white only; thank you for this

Just wanted to say, I asked you in a live feed how to go about getting rid of black beard algae, well, a combination of cutting alot of leaves, and dosing excel everyday for 4 days, I killed every single strained of that gross looking monster, and also promoted massive growth in my dwarf sag, I've got new sprouts! No co2, barely dosing flourish, and I just recently gave my pothos a lamp again... my levels are back to normal, everything is awesome, I'm so happy!

This plant grows great for me. Maybe it is my water. I think the hobby doesn’t account for how much your water plays into plant growth. Some easy plant are harder to grow because water isn’t compatible. The thing with this plant is getting rid of all bad leaf so that it doesn’t waste energy on it

I love this plant. It's one of my favorites for my goldfish tank. They can't hurt it no matter how hard they try to munch on it. In my tank it has had a diatoms issue, but I figured out that I can gently brush it with a soft japanese artist brush by holding the foliage against my fingers. I love ferns, so the new growth always gives me joy. I simply weight the clumps at the bottom with pliable plant weighs and tuck them in between rocks. Love this plant!. I can't recommend it enough.

My latest update. I bought the fern in Jan 2020. It took until early August to have grown enough for me to say it's doing fine. I think the key everyone is to remember the roots don't just anchor the plant to wood, they DO also draw in nutrients. So,a cutting as I had with a single stem and just a few wiry roots put energy into tiny leaves and then more roots..repeat until it one day started to flush 8" leaves and I'm sure larger in the future. Larger root system- large diameter rhizome= larger fronds. Good Luck. Its my favorite aquatic plant and i've tried most of them!

I'm really liking these species spotlights. They are a great guide tto learn what the exact plant looks like matched with its name & proper spelling, what light & hard or soft water conditions, growth rate, final size & how long it takes to get there, whether it needs CO2 or not, how often or not to trim, divide & propagate and if it an easy or difficult plant to grow. I appreciate knowing that these plants come from Tropica. Thanks Justin.

Its a HARD GROW. I have it in soft water, plenty of light and I aim a powerhead at it...and yet the leaves are slowly disintegrating...even as it grows new runners and opening new croziers. I know others who have tried on plant forums, say it just turns black and dies. This is my second try with it and this time I'm dosing iron...THIS IS A FERN..lol, not "like a fern" it IS one. Go for a walk in the woods..see those ferns growing on the tree's in the shade? Bolbitis is in that same Polypodium family. So,anyways..with the iron the decline is slower than my first try...but it's there. I did have one wild thought. Maybe the UV light from my LED fixture is burning it? Otherwise I'm stumped.

Could you please stock the Tropica mosses? Moss is my #1 plant that brings in all the pests. I watch people like MD Fishtanks use the moss from Tropica and feel so jealous!

One thing is..if old fronds go bad? Cut them off and force the stem to grow new ones. The new ones are more adaptable to your tank.

On further study...you might want to go easy on the light when you first add it. For those who's lighting can be intense by average aquarium standards...takes time to adjust. So far,it is still going..even for me..ahem..

I have a problem with bolbitis. Older leaves have turned brown. Water is soft, light is not intense. Bolbitis grows in my tank since March. Ideas?

Just wondering how Bolbitis goes with liquid carbon? First time trying to grow it and it has died off at the same time I stopped dosing CO2 via liquid carbon. Here in Australia it is very expensive, so need to fix this problem and get all the rizomes growing again.

I was very interested in that bolbitis until you said not to trim the ends back. I only have small nano tanks and 16" is too long for them. If they were shorter I'd love a tank full for my fish to swim through.

I would disagree with you on the slow growth part. I average 3-5 new leafs a week but again that is with C02 but it’s still a decent grower.

That wasn't B. heudelotii. They sell thousands of a related fern and that one is not even aquatic.. B. heteroclita. I hear it's not aquatic, haven't tried it.
