It should be taken as a bit of a compliment that the scammers mistake your videos for the real instructional videos! Honestly, I referred to your video on their railroad spike tongs just as much as the official instructions, sometimes a second angle and a different phrasing makes all the difference in understanding a process.

I heard old timers talk about a fellow like you John. Lots of good stories but the best ones were about you shooting straight from the hips and calling a spade a spade , it's taken a few years to totally believe the one about you being able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but I'm getting closer to believing it every Sunday Morning when I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing with us and keep up the good work and videos. Fred.

I’ve always ordered straight from the source when it’s possible. I’ve seen a pair of tongs from a different seller and I will say there’s definitely a difference. Ken’s has thicker material, larger boss area and a rivet that’s twice the diameter. Much much better quality.

Love Ken's, while you're shopping for the tong blanks, make sure to pick up some of his hook projects as well, they make great gifts! Also, I've never been more envious of your power hammer than in this video, you drew out those reins in seconds, I think your skill made it look easier than it really is 😁

My first tongs were a pair of modified vise grips model LC-12 (plumbers vise grips) with all the teeth ground off and notched like a pair of bolt jaw tongs, which I used to make some of Ken's tongs from the bundle as well as buying a few other items from Ken's site as well

Kens has great stuff. I don’t have any of their tongs (yet) but I do have some chisels, a twisting wrench, and their 2 lb rounding hammer is one of my absolute favorite hammers for general forging.

I’m a little Wackadoo I have used a bit of Automotive Anti-Freeze in my grinder & sanding table, cooling tub, (repurposed M-60 Ammo can) for years now! When you have to cool down the drill bit or chisel or whatever you need to grind without changing the temper of the steel it works great! And the telling smell of antifreeze if you have heated it up to much from grinding can make a big difference when you have to work with thick gloves on! Now that it’s 16° this morning I’m curious about if it has enough recycled antifreeze in it. It does evaporate with the water, but much slower than water alone! And then there’s the volume and solution to consider. 😊

Bought the 5-pack of rapid tongs. The Flat, Slotted, and Scrolling Tongs came out about as you'd expect for an almost noob. The other two, which required spitting the nib with a chisel, revealed my lack of experience (and not quite perfect eyesight). Gonna have to buy both of those blanks again. Your video pointed out corrections I need to make in technique, and hopefully my new specs will be here before the new blank.

I made the mistake of buying from an amazon dealer for pre made tong blanks. When I realized my sin I vowed only to buy from Ken from then on and always send everyone looking to get tongs or tong blank kits to his page as atonement.

That's disgusting that other companies would do that! It also explains why when I bought a set of blanks that they were tiny, roughly half the size I thought they should be. I might have to give it another go with the proper company! Thanks for letting us know!

I've bought a bunch of stuff from Ken over the last few years. Any suggestions on what to do if you don't have your chisel exactly centered?
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
Keep an eye on it and correct as you go. But once its cut you just have to do your best with the results. Worse case you cut on side off and have to weld on a new lip.

If one were good with a torch he may like to cut out his own blanks. Would regular mild steel work? Is there some place I could get a pattern for the cutout?
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
You certainly could. But I don't think anyone that has taken the time developing their own patterns to make a product they sell will want to share those patterns.

Newb here. Question: Can I do everything over the anvil that I can with a tredle/power hammer? Or are there things that can only be made using power hammers? My assumption is that a competent blacksmith can do everything over the anvil but the tredle/power hammer helps speed up production output and handling larger stock.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
For the most part you can do everything at the anvil and having someone who can help by swinging a sledge hammer makes it even better. The power hammer and press do make your life easier, speed production and allow you to work longer hours. Sometimes its really just a matter of designing the project in a way that works best for the tools and skills you have available.

If the imitators are linking to your videos about making Ken’s custom iron tongs, my thought is you remove those videos and only leave videos where you offer a warning about all the poor quality fake product out there. If the videos all tell people to be sure to only buy direct from Ken’s the fakers will not have videos to link to. That will deprive them of free but fake validation material.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Жыл бұрын
Removing a video that actually has value to my viewers punishes those viewers more than it does the scammers. Plus you can't simply replace a video with something else, so the link would not go to the new video in any case.

The only thing that I don't like about Ken's Custom is their prices. Coastal sells horseshoes for $2 to 2.25 each, and railroad spikes on the internet for $1 to $1.25 each.
