뭔 말인지 하나도 모르겠지만 피아노 선율이 아름답고 조성진도 아름답다.

***Here is the translation*** Q: You've become even more taciturn. A: Not that. I don't talk a lot during my daily life either. I will have to give more effort. I usually listen. You feel awkward, right? [SJ tries to break the ice and loosen her up. It should be her job, LOL] I feel awkward, too, because there are so many cameras here. Q: Nevertheless, you have done quite a few interviews lately when you released your new album; you were really great in those videos where you explained the music while you were playing. A: The videos only ran for 10-15 minutes in the end, but it took me about 2 hours to record it. I did everything I possibly could, but they still edited it short, LOL. [SJ jokes] Q: [laughs] So you recorded it thinking that it was an extended version? We will make sure it all aires for you this time with no editing. A: No, thank you. I will trust you and leave it up to you all [SJ smiles]. Q: Your schedule appears to be really tight, especially since you travel a long distance quite a lot. A: Yes, particularly this month because I had to perform with the Berlin Phil on short notice. Q: It's November (2017) right now as we are recording this interview. A: My schedule was to perform for 6 days in Frankfurt, fly to Hong Kong the next day and perform on the 10th, fly to Vancouver for a recital, fly to Santa Babara near LA for a recital, and I just flew here (Seoul, Korea) yesterday. Q: It was your debut concert with the Berlin Phil and your debut in the hall. How did you feel at the moment when you performed with the Berlin Phil for the first time? A: That concert was a little different for me. I was scheduled to perform on Nov 4th. I was, in fact, a little nervous before the rehearsal. The Berlin Phil's brand image of also being regarded as the best orchestra in the world made me a little nervous. But in actuality, the orchestra members were kind, not to mention Simon Rattle was nice to me. I was at ease at the end of the day. The piano was excellent, the Orchestra was great too, so it was solely left up to me to make it happen. In fact, that type of circumstance is what you feel most comfortable with. Many times, even though you do well, you end up having lousy performance as a whole due to other adverse conditions. Having said that, I was able to perform comfortably. Q: What kinds of thoughts go through your mind while you are performing? I am so curious about it. A: I don't have many thoughts during my performances. After I hit the first note, the next thing I notice is somehow, it's over. Like I had said before, I tend to listen to my music while playing. Q: Since your childhood, you have been distinctively known to learn new pieces in a very short time. A: I have different thoughts now (about practicing). For example, in regards to recitals, I think the number of actual performances is more important than the time you spend practicing. [Obviously, here again, SJ does not want to acknowledge that he is a faster learner and deviates a little, LOL.] Q: You are saying that the actual game is the better practice. A: I was a little nervous about Ravel's concerto because this was only my third collaboration for the piece. When I played this piece in 2009 with Maestro Myung Whun Chung, the first note [SJ claps to demonstrate] wasn't in sync, which made me a little bit nervous about playing that same part again. Q: The part that they clap with the wooden instrument, right? A: Yes. From that single experience where it didn't sync. . . You might think it's nothing, but you still get disappointed. Q: I am curious to know about your style when it comes to practicing. Is there a particular way of practicing? Like a one-point practice tip? A: Nothing like that at all. Q: Is that right? A: I just keep practicing in different styles. I would try playing in one particular tempo, then in a slower tempo, rubatos in different ways. I try to decide on the sounds I will be making, where to place the climax, what angle to put my hands at, and so forth. Q: With that much articulation? A: I think Ravel's piece requires articulation. The composer himself was a little more rational than Debussy. The music is simple and yet dense within the scope of the music itself. Because the music is simple, you will have to give it deep thoughts on playing it out. Q: Right, the second movement [inaudible] . . . It's ONE two three. How should it go? A: Actually, you should not have an accent on the bass. Q: On the last beat then? A: No. It should be one, two, [SJ shows the third beat in motion and says] like this. [The crew voices out and asks: Would you be able to demonstrate it on the piano?] Q: You mean the entry part should be . . . A: Yes. [SJ stands up, walks to the piano, and sits down.] The beginning part of the second movement is like a waltz. [He plays and says] It's this, right? It's a 3/4 note, so there are 6 1/8's in it. You want to keep the bass alive and simultaneously to address that it is a three-quarter beat. I think that is the hard part. Q: How do you decide that? As you proceed to play and listen to your playing? A: When there is a line on the bass, the bass goes like this. [SJ demonstrates it on the piano] [SJ continues playing a little, stops playing, and says] The bass continuously goes down in this part like that, and you can hear the bass occasionally. Q: You hear dissonance there, and yet it's strangely so beautiful. A: That is what I like. [SJ continues playing a little, stops playing, and says] Like these parts here. I think that is what is charming about this piece.
