kpluv music: Thanks again for your translation. In this one, I find that as a pianist, Seong-Jin Cho is a perfectionist and that is why his performances are all , to me, flawless. It also took a long time to get his recordings just the way he wanted them to be. As a person I find him humble and shy. The great and famous virtuosos, Radu Lupu and K. Zimmerman are his firm friends but he never mentions their names nor talk about them unless asked. Another trait of his that I admire is his inner strength that he possesses Although he is gentle and kind. During the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, strangely, he began to get degrading marks from a certain juror. At the end he ended with the most humiliating mark of 1.It must have been the most stressful time of his life as the marks were all exposed daily and how he managed to struggle through to end up with the gold medal shows his strengh of character. What a remarkable young man Seong-Jin is.

***Here is the translation*** Q: So we were talking about your albums. A: Yes. Q: Typically, you only mend the parts you don't like, but I heard you value recording in single takes. A: If it can be done. Q: Is there a reason? A: I did my recording... For example, I felt it when I recorded Ballades. I probably played Ballade No. 1 thirty times. Of course, I didn't play the whole piece all 30 times, but including the times that I stopped halfway and restarted, I still played it 25-30 times. Q: No.1 alone? A: Yes. I listened to all of them. There was a part that I didn't like in one instance. I listened to my other takes, and it didn't flow well. At that time, I realized that, if the situation allows, I should record my Debussy album in one take. In general, Technically difficult pieces are harder to record. It comes down to my personality. You might find this odd; I discard it all when I don't like a particular part and refuse to play through the end. I probably played Mouvement Images III 100 times, almost all in single takes. Q: Because you have such high standards? A: You don't want to end up being discontent with your recording. You recorded it because you have confidence in the repertoire, and you know you can play it to your satisfaction. I am not a meticulous person, but I am with my music. Q: How did you feel when you were finished with your recording. A: There were some pieces that I was happy about out of this album. There were also ones that I wasn't 100 percent certain about; in that case, I don't listen to the albums LOL [Per another interview, it's the opposite for his live performances. He said he tended to listen/watch his unsatisfactory live performances recorded/filmed to check what could have been done better and joked he wouldn't watch ones satisfactory so that he could keep good memories]. Q: Out of this album here, which piece was the most . . . ? A: Generally speaking, Suite Bergamasque was the most successful. Q: When you performed last time in Korea, and you had a recital in January, for instance, I got the impression that you were trying to build your individuality, especially from your Schubert performance. A: Perhaps, up to my high school years, I had focused on individuality. However, at a certain point in time, I realized that individuality didn't necessarily mean playing differently from others. Q: You said in some interview that playing Brahms was very difficult. [note: SJ said in the interview that he thinks the pianist's body weight had a lot to do with the sound they produce. He also said he was planning to play Brahms in his 30's because he would have gained more weight by then. LOL] A: I love Brahms. There is a particular sound that I relate to Brahms, and I think I need more time to shape up the sound. I am saving Brahms for later. Q: The audience might wonder how it would even be possible to produce such a delicate sound out of the piano with mere 88 keys, don't you agree? A: That is true. If only one key is repeatedly hit like 20 times, I also wouldn't be able to tell them apart at all. And yet, I think you will be able to tell the difference if you listen to a song. Q: When you made your elementary debut on stage in Korea, you also played Mozart, Debussy, and Chopin. So as you mentioned earlier, you have your inclination. A: So I think it is important what you do or what you listen to as a child. Q: If I remember it correctly, when you were young, you said once in an interview that you wanted to include some 30 major concertos in your repertoire directory. A: I am still young, and I liked the idea of I've-done-many because I was even younger back then. I am not the type of person to practice for long hours. When I say this, my peers try to find fault with me, saying I am coy. They say, "Are you saying you spend no time practicing but still do so well?" I think a suitable amount of practice time varies from one individual to another. It's difficult for me to practice for more than 4 or 5 hours; I lose my concentration, my ability to continue practicing, and my touch. Q: What do you do during your spare time? A: I lay down on my bed, eat if I am hungry, go for a walk, read, and sleep on the plane when I am traveling. Q: Have you met with Radu Rupu? I portray him as a recluse. A: He is a really nice person. Q: He seems to have a different character from Zimerman. A: Both of them are my mentors. They both are very nice. I guess great pianists have good personalities. Q: Is that right? [Laughs] A: Yes, all the ones that I've met so far. It's interesting; collaborating with different orchestras, you sometimes get to meet with the members who are full of pride, and you get cold feet from it. The Berlin Phil members are very friendly. I am sure they have pride in them too, but they didn't let it show. They all have good personalities. I learned for sure this time that good players are good people. [SJ jokes pounding lightly on the desk] Q: It's because they have confidence in their ability, to others they are . . . A: Yes, generous. Q: You have a great personality yourself too. A: I should be a good person so that I can become a good player. Q: [Laughs] [music]
